Awarapan

Reviewer's Summary - Above Average

Language: Hindi
Year: June 29, 2007 in the U.S.
Actors: Emraan Hashmi, Shriya Saran, Mrinalini Sharma, Rehan Khan, Ashutosh Rana, Aashish Vidyarthi, Atul Parchure
Director: Mohit Suri
Producer: Mukesh Bhatt
Screenplay: Shagufta Rafique
Music: Pritam Chakraborty
Lyrics: Sayeed Qadri, Asif Ali Beg, Baba Farid

Emraan Hashmi sparkles in this above average Bollywood entertainer from director Mohit Suri.

A fairly fast-paced film, Awarapan is the story of a heartbroken lover and goon with moments of conscience.

Hashmi is maturing into a decent actor, a rarity in a Bollywood dominated by hopeless performers like Bobby Deol, Vivek Oberoi and Tushar Kapoor.

We found Hashmi inadequate in Killer, the Bollywood rip-off of that Hollywood thriller Collateral (2004) starring Jamie Foxx and Tom Cruise.

But in Awarapan, Hashmi rises to the occasion as the henchman of a Hongkong gangster Malik (Ashutosh Rana).

When ordered by Malik to kill his lover (Mrinalini Sharma) - a victim of human trafficking - Shivam (Emraan Hashmi) disobeys the order incurring his boss' wrath. Shivam disobeys because he's often reminded of his late lover Aliya's refrains to let birds free from their cages.

Shriya Saran plays Hashmi's love interest in Awarapan. Recently seen in the Tamil movie Sivaji, Shriya has a small role in Awarapan but does a decent job in the limited screen time alloted to her.

Awarapan's music is nothing great. Moments out of the Regal Commerce movie hall in North Brunswick, New Jersey, we had a hard time recollecting any of the songs.

Ashutosh Rana and Aashish Vidyarthi turn in good performances as the Malik brothers, engaged in various nefarious activities in Hongkong.

What sets Awarapan apart from the run of the mill Bollywood productions this summer is the attention to the story, fine photography and decent performances from the lead actors.

In a season when Bollywood fans have been bombarded with pathetic movies like Jhoom Barabar Jhoom, Fool N Final and Apne, Awarapan comes as a refreshing change. - Copyright SearchIndia.com
