Dahek left us dispirited and fatigued at Bollywood's complete lack of imagination.

This mediocre movie with a trite "Hindu boy falls in love with Muslim girl leading to tension" story has nothing going for it.

It's not just the badly scripted story that's a letdown. Ditto with the acting, music, photography and direction as well. You see, director Lateef Binny works hard to satisfy every gripe with this torture.

In short, Dahek is a movie with really no reason for existence except that someone felt like squandering some money.

Samir Roshan a.k.a Prince (Akshaye Khanna) falls in love with a Muslim girl Neelima Bakshi a.k.a Neelu (Sonali Bendre). Parents of both Prince and Neelu are aghast over the youngsters' love. Prince gets admission into a medical college but his thoughts are consumed by his love for Neelu.

To make a bad situation worse, Neelu's uncle Jabbar Bakshi (Danny Denzongpa) - and family head - is released from prison. Jabbar was in prison for killing his brother-in-law Iqbal for eloping with his sister.

When Neelu's marriage is arranged with another boy, Prince and Neelu elope seeing no other way out of their romantic impasse. Their elopement causes upheavals not just in their families but violence in the entire city. Political leaders from both the Hindu and Muslim communities exploit the tension and in the communal frenzy many innocent citizens lose their lives.

The movie stumbles along in an orgy of violence until - mercifully for the audience - both Prince and Neelu are popped off.

Movies like Dahek defy even the most robust appetite for Bollywood movies. - Copyright SearchIndia.com.
