By the usual lowly standards of most Tamil movies, Naan Avanillai is not that bad a deal.

A remake of the 1974 classic of the same name starring Gemini Ganeshan, Naan Avanillai is different from the usual run of the mill rubbish that the Tamil film industry churns out in voluminous quantities like an assembly line operation.

Narrated in flashback after his arrest and during the court trial, Naan Avanillai centers around the story of a serial con artist and philanderer played by Jeevan.

Although the audience knows the truth, the clever philanderer stubbornly insists in court that he's Annamalai, an innocent lad from a village and has nothing to do with the accusations of the various girls he has wronged. His standard and amusing reply - Naan Avanillai meaning I am not him.

One of the biggest disappointments in Naan Avanillai is a ho-hum performance by Jeevan. This young fellow, who was very effective as the hardened criminal Pandiyan in the 2003 film Kaakha Kaakha has squandered the opportunity and put forth a mediocre performance in Naan Avanillai that put us off.

Jeevan's acting is not even on par with his peers Vijay or Surya, who are no great actors themselves.

In Naan Avanillai, Jeevan is paired opposite five pretty girls - Malavika, Sneha, Jyothirmayi, Keerthi Chawla and Namitha.

Of the five girls, the buxom Namitha is easily the worst in the acting department. Namitha can't act and Namitha can't dance. So, what's she doing in Tamil movies? We want to know.

It's a testament to the pitiful standards in the Tamil film industry that such bad actresses easily find a foothold and are thriving. Sneha, who plays Anjali, the daughter of the judge (Lakshmi) trying the philanderer's case, is the most impressive of the lot followed by Malavika and Jyothirmayi.

The less said about Keerthi Chawla the better.

Overall, the music in Naan Avanillai is not bad. Nee Kavithai (featuring the voluptous Kannada babe Malavika and Jeevan) and Yen Enakku (the Sneha-Jeevan dance) were our favorite songs in the movie.

Naan Avanillai provides Tamil movie lovers a well needed respite from the run of lousy movies like Parattai Engira Azhagu Sundaram, Unnale Unnale and Mayakkannadi.- Copyright SearchIndia.com.
