Ultimate Korangu’s Billa for Cannes? – What a Shame!

For the sake of the honor of Tamil Nadu and 77 million Tamils worldwide, we hope that the reports of Ajith’s Billa being screened on May 10 at the Cannes Film Festival turn out to be false.

Featuring the two non-actors Ajith and Nayantara, Ajith’s Billa (the remake of the old Billa starring Rajinikanth) is one of the ugliest Tamil movies we’ve seen in several decades.

As if watching Ajith’s Billa was not bad enough, now comes the horrifying news that this horror show is going to be showcased at the upcoming Cannes Film Festival.

All these years, we thought the Cannes Film Festival was the occasion to showcase high-art not serve as a bastion of low-fart.

Upon hearing of the Ajith’s Billa-for-Cannes report, we were reminded of what the British author Theodore Dalrymple wrote in the book Our Culture, What’s Left of It:

To be a man of artistic taste now requires that you have no standards at all to be violated: which, as Ortega y Gasset said, is the beginning of barbarism.

When there are far better movies like Mozhi and Sathum Podaathay, it’s an affront to all notions of fair play to send garbage like Billa to an international film festival. It’s like awarding the Nobel Peace Prize to monsters like Adolf Hitler or Joseph Stalin.

Sending a remake-rubbish like Ajith’s Billa is an insult to millions of Tamil movie fans worldwide.

If the reports of Ajith’s Billa-for-Cannes are really true, we’d like to know on what basis Billa was selected.

Was a fair procedure followed? Which were the other films considered? Who constituted the jury that selected this abomination?

Vijay’s Pokiri and Rajinikanth’s Sivaji were orders of magnitude better than Ajith’s Billa.

For the record, Mozhi, Pokiri, Sathum Podaathay and Sivaji were also released in 2007.

Among the many bad Tamil actors we’ve had the misfortune to encounter on the big screen, Ajith causes the maximum agony to serious lovers of Tamil cinema.

As we wrote in our review of Billa last year:

The worst piece of Billa was Ajith’s pathetic performance. Prancing about like a Korangu than a seasoned actor, Ajith looks wooden in most scenes. There’s absolutely no range in his emotions or his dialogue delivery.

After watching Ajith’s Korangu like antics on screen in Billa and his other insufferable Tamil movies, we considered it fair to call Ajith the Tamil film industry’s Ultimate Korangu. Definitely not the Ultimate Star as he’s often referred to.

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

You dickhead, ever heard of a book called the dictionary? You can’t write a sentence without a million mistakes!

Ajith’s Billa is a piece of trash. If Ajith’s Billa made any money, it’s thanks to Superstar Rajinikanth’s blessings.

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

cannes film festival have a good panel and they have clear idea about good movies they can discriminate good and bad movies.
panel have a people who have some sense and something in their head.not like you people who lash out at ajith without any reasons like a fool.billa is in cannes because it is a movie which was taken to hollywood standards technically suave and wonderful performane by ajit, anyway ajit will soon become a international star.

why you are still angry on billa’s grand success and you are keep on creating blogs condeming ajit.hey digs dont bark at sun.

I darely object your comments! I am sure none could fit perfect with the costume that Thala wear-up… He looked ultimately brilliant and also pretty gorgeous. Moreover, his acting style was ground-breaking. Also, i raise dispute for your point kindling Nayanthara… The gorgeous has won Vijay Awards for her stunning performance in the movie.. No girl can perform such a kind of chic acting, as Nayan did… People are not blind to choose any tom-dick-n-harry as the best performer… Only after watching the performance, any actress will own a triple crown.. It is really objectionable, that words shouldn’t fly out, if you possess the rights to give comments. Thala always rocks with his unique style…. If the movie is not to the par, then y the theater shows went full with blasting sale.. The movie was a blockbuster!!! I wanted you to remind again… No doubts, Billa was absolutely fantastic in all aspects!!!!!

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

Hey ‘Gorgeous’ – You sound familiar.

We disagree with the ‘gorgeous’ awards you’ve given above to Ajith and Nayanthara since both were awful in Billa.

To ensure Billas grand and amazing sucess at the box office sequel of billa is on the way. billa 2 will be produced by ocher studios owned by soundarya rajnikanth with budget of 30cr. To ensure ajits charisma and stature
he will be paid a whopping 10cr. so he becomes the second highest paid actor in the world. so what more a grat reply ot critics like you.

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

You write above – Ajith will be paid a whopping 10cr. so he becomes the second highest paid actor in the world.

At the current conversion rate, Rs 10 cr amounts to about $2.5 million. Surely, that does not make Ajith the second highest paid actor in the world! Ajith is probably not even the first or second highest paid star in India, let alone the world. Your facts are completely wrong.

  8. dilip   May 13, 2008 at 5:04 am

sorry i meant ajit becomes the second highest paid actor in India next to rajnikanth in a short span within few years he will beat rajni.it is a official news.

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

You write above Ajith becomes second highst paid actor in india.he eclipsed srk, aamir and soon he will beat rajni to become no1.

Keep Dreaming. No one north of Gummidipoondi has even heard of Ajith. SRK & Aamir are household names.

I just read your criticism, good. but do you know one thing Mozhi and paruthiveeran were screened in Cannes in 2007 itself. Do you know this fact

1.) Sivaji – the Boss, the magnus production of Shankar was taken in a overall budget of 40 crores and there is a petition in the Chambers of Distributors that Sivaji couldn’t able to collect the distrubutor’s money in Dharmapuri and Theni District because it garnered cost of 4.5 crores whereas it was sold for 5.5 crores.

2.) In case of Pokkiri, I accept it was one of the best blockbuster of the year 2007 released in January, but for Cannes festival the movie year is taken from Current April to the next year April. So If pokkiri should have been selected, it should have been done for April 2007 itself.

    About BILLA

1.) Billa was made in the budget of 16 crores overall.

2.) It was sold to the distributors of Tamil Nadu overall for the amount of 23 crores.

3.) Billa garnered a profit of 5.5 crores in Chennai only

4.) Billa Mp3 was one of the top chartbusters after Pokkiri and Sivaji

5.) Here is your bonanza, Billa was released in Kerala on Dec 28, two weeks later it was released here. Billa is the highest grosser Tamil movie in Kerala till now. It overtook the records created by Sivaji and Pokkiri in Kerala.

A film which was technically suave and visually appealing, stunts sequences like Car chasing, Rope drifting and even Climax fight (One to One)were excellent. Billa is considered as one of the sleek visual treat in recent years. I thank Vishnuvardhan and Anu Vishnuvardhan for their performance, Nirav Shah for his Cinematography and Willian Ong for his Stunt sequences

In all fact Billa is one of the movie which is technically good and which brought international standards of film making. I strongly accept, It is a movie worth sending to the Cannes.

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

We respectfully disagree with your implicit thesis that Billa represents the apotheosis of Tamil movies.

hi ajith desrves better than what you have said.he is a good actor see his old classics like vaali aasai and mugavari.moreover his billa is a grand success which has taken him to new heights.

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

You write above: Ajith’s billa is a grand success which has taken him to new heights

Sure, Hitler was a grand success with the Germans in his day. Does that mean Hitler deserves our respect?
