iTunes on Way to Digital Media Hegemony

Apple’s music and movie store iTunes is well on its way toward establishing world hegemony in the realm of digital media.

According to the latest numbers from market researcher NPD, iTunes continues to remain the #1 music retailer in the U.S., a position it reached earlier this year.

Here are the Top Five Music Retailers in the U.S:

1. iTunes – Offers music, movie & TV show downloads
2. Wal-Mart – Physical CDs and downloads
3. Best Buy – Physical CDs and downloads
4. Amazon.com – Physical CDs and downloads
5. Target – Primarily CDs

Apple claims the iTunes Store has sold over five billion songs.

iTunes is said to feature the world’s largest music catalog of over eight million songs, 20,000 TV episodes and 2,000 films including over 350 in high definition video.

iTunes’ success owes to the tight link between Apple’s MP3 players iPod and iPhone and the iTunes store.

And unless you’ve just come in from some other planet, you know the iPod is the most popular and the largest selling MP3 player.

iTunes has a fine collection of Bollywood songs, many for 99 cents each.

Our iPhone 3G (which includes an iPod) has a nice collection of old Bollywood songs like Dum aro Dum, Achche to hum chalte, Yeh jo mohabbat hain and more.
