One of the defining events of modern India over the last six decades is the decline of the Congress party as a force in Indian politics.

Congress has seen an alarming decline in the total percentage of votes polled and the number of seats won in the Lok Sabha parliamentary elections.

The decline of Congress in Indian politics mirrors the decline of institutional structures and procedures in the Indian political arena and replacement of first generation leaders by a class of venal politicians for whom politics was merely an arena for personal aggrandisement.

The below table compiled from Election Commission of India data shows the extent of Congress’ fall over the years.

What an irony that the Congress party, once home to leaders of stature Continue reading »

Abhishek Bachchan’s latest shame Delhi 6 has crashed 75% in its second weekend at the U.S. box office.

Whaddaya expect?

The movie is junk, as we’ve said from the outset.

Folks, Abhishek Bachchan and acting are like oil and water. They don’t mix well.

In the second weekend at the U.S. box office, Delhi 6 came in at No-40 with a total gross of $150,840 and average gross of $1,676.

Here’s how Delhi 6 fared compared to a few other prominent Bollywood movies in its second weekend at the U.S. box office:

We live in unusual times.

America is struggling while China and India are thriving.

But in the movie business, it’s the other way around.

Lately, Hollywood is thriving while Bollywood is gasping for breath.

Hard Times for Bollywood
Bollywood is struggling with movie (Yuvraaj) after movie (Chandni Chowk to China) after movie (Billu Barber) after movie (Delhi 6) failing to resonate at the box office.

Indian multiplex owners are wailing about empty halls and have started cutting ticket prices while movie halls in the U.S. (except the ones showing crappy Bollywood movies like Billu Barber or Delhi 6) continue to do brisk business.

The New York Times had an interesting piece yesterday on the good times lately for Hollywood.

Here’s an excerpt from the NYT piece:

While much of the economy is teetering between bust and bailout, the movie industry has been startled by a box-office surge that has little precedent in the modern era. Suddenly it seems as if everyone is going to the movies, with ticket sales this year up 17.5 percent, to $1.7 billion, according to Media by Numbers, a box-office tracking company.

And it is not just because ticket prices are higher. Attendance has also jumped, by nearly 16 percent. If that pace continues through the year, it would amount to the biggest box-office surge in at least two decades.

Can we attribute the audience surge in the U.S. to the economic slowdown Continue reading »

It’s hell today, here in the Northeast.

Heavy snow since Sunday evening has closed schools, delayed flights, shut down roads, caused power outages and created a big mess across the Northeast.

Picture taken today at 10:15 ET (20:45 IST)

Here’s an excerpt from the NYT:

Schools were closed from Virginia to Maine, and government offices in New Jersey and Washington, where the White House was now paired with a white lawn, had delayed Continue reading »

So we trooped over to Apple’s iTunes digital media store yesterday and like any cheapo desi searched for a good deal. And boy did we find one.

Yes, we found a really nice Kadri Gopalnath album for just $3.99. Sweet deal, na? :)

Kadri Gopalnath – Saxophone Vol 3 is the album we purchased and downloaded to our laptop and later synced to the iPod on our iPhone:

These are the tracks in the album:
