Watching Rachel Getting Married

Just returned from RedBox (the $1 per night DVD rental from those red kiosks outside U.S. grocery stores).

Since it’s Wednesday, we got our DVD for free (Red Box now offers free DVD rental on Mondays and Wednesdays. Bet all you cheapo desi SOBs in the U.S. already knew that).

We picked up Rachel Getting Married (Anne Hathaway).

Our introduction to Anne Hathaway came via The Devil Wears Prada (lovely movie also featuring Meryl ‘actress extraordinaire’ Streep).

Directed by Jonathan Demme, Rachel Getting Married has won high praise from the critics, in which category yours ‘humble’ truly is a foot-soldier.

The movie has a 87% rating on the Tomatometer.

Anne Hathaway’s performance in Rachel Getting Married won her a Best Actress nomination for the recent Academy Awards (Kate Winslet won for the Reader).

We’ll update this post after we finish watching the movie.

 Update:

Anne Hathaway proves yet again that she’s one of the most watchable actresses in Hollywood now.

The movie looks at the tensions that rise to the surface when Kym (Anne Hathaway) comes from a drug rehab center for her sister Rachel’s wedding.

The tensions between the sisters, between father and the two daughters, and mother (now divorced) and the two daughters is interesting to behold as they erupt in a fury. Plus, there’s always the reference to an old tragedy in the family.

Oh, by the way Rachel’s marriage is an Indian-theme wedding with all the saris, Sag Paneer and Alu Gobi.

Isn’t Anne Hathaway in The Princess Diaries 1 & 2? Have you seen them?

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

According to Wiki, Anne Hathaway was in The Princess Diaries. We haven’t seen that.

Just finished (12:23 AM ET) watching Rachel Getting Married.

Nice movie. Fine performance by Anne Hathaway.

There’s not a single Bollywood actress, who’s half as good as Anne Hathaway.

I haven’t watched it yet.. Watching critically acclaimed “Girlfight” on HBO.. So far I haven’t been enthralled by it.. but that’s probably because I am multi-tasking.

I saw some reviews say that “Rachel..” is a bit too long.. and that some of the content could have been editted out.. did you feel so.. I am guessing it needs to be watched with full concentration to enjoy it fully.

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

We didn’t feel the movie was too long.

BTW, do you like Sag Paneer. 😉

  3. Amy آصف Dala   March 12, 2009 at 10:28 am

hmm.. Sag Paneer??? Is this a wordplay involving sagging tits?? if so, the answer is yes.. I like all kinds except the plastic ones.. they just don’t look & feel right.

BTW, Hathaway’s are not sagging as evident from “Havoc” and “Brokeback Mountain”.. and apparently there is a great debate going on whether there is a nipple visible in the bathtub scene.. I am yet to check it!.. if it is inconclusive, I’d have to rent the blu-ray version.. damn! the complexities of the life..

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

The bathtub scene was OK…nothing really extraordinary.

Oh, I did’t see your update in the main post – you probably should indicate in the heading that it is “Updated”.

Yes, I do like Sag Panneer in the straight-forward sense, but what was the wink for?

You may find the Tamil movie “Autograph” interesting.. the climax of that is at a wedding with a wide range of complex characters.

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

Just back from a 100-mile drive for nothing. Can’t remember why we used the winky, now.

I guess you overlooked the sentence in the drug rehab part. Shudnt it be “her” sister’s wedding?

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

    Fixed. Thanks.

    Vivek Mundra arrested?

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

The name is Vivek Kundra (not Mundra).

It does not look like Vivek Kundra is involved (at least so far). Read this WSJ piece.

    100-mile drive for nothing.. somnambulism?

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

    A wasted trip. 🙁

  8. What_if   March 15, 2009 at 6:52 am

SI you went on a 100-mile drive for nothing? I hope it wasnt a drive to Maine.

Why Maine ? / Whats in Maine ? you may ask. Here is why

A new coffee shop called The Grand Topless Coffee shop has opened on a busy street in Vassalboro, Maine. Three Topless waitresses are supposed to be serving “HOT” Coffee.

Being a “Sappad piriyar” & a reviewer, you can write about it. The Notice outside says “No cameras, No touching, Cash only” – So Kanna, remember to keep one hand tucked in your pant pocket, while sipping coffee with the other.

We unfortunate souls (not in US) cannot go there. We can atleast see through your eyes and read about your Titillating, Salivating experience. Majaa Maadu !

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

    Wonder if you’re ‘familiar’ with a lap-dance.

Yes, we’ve heard about the “Hot” Coffee Shop in Maine.

BTW, when we went to the Sex Museum in NYC, this is the picture we found near the entrance.

Indian cities too have had stripclubs/nightclubs for decades. You just have to know where to look. 😉 In Chennai, there was one close to the Egmore train station (a two-storeyed bldg on a side Rd, about three minutes walk from the station). In B’Lore too, there were a few: one right on Brigade Rd and the other in the Majestic area (upstairs in a building opposite Janata Bazaar…on the side Rd…not KG Rd).

  9. What_if   March 15, 2009 at 8:50 am

@SI:Yes, we’ve heard about the “Hot” Coffee Shop in Maine.

But you didnt say if you are going to review the coffee shop or not.

About lap-dance, With the moral brigade prowling and cops storming into “high spirited” parties even on the outskirts of Bangalore, I doubt it still exists on Brigade Road, but they would be lapping up in some dingy corner of the city.

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

We’d have loved to review the ‘hot cups.’ Alas, Vassalboro (Maine) is too far (like going from Chennai to Gulbarga or from B’lore to Pune for Coffee).

Yeah, the recent Bangalore raid has become an issue…looks like the cops were a little over-enthusiastic.

The only “cabaret” show I went for was in Pondicherry.. nearly 15 years ago.. didn’t feature topless dancers.. Only a few ugly girls made uglier by some weird make-up wearing gaudy=y cleavage revealing “jackets” and making some crude dance moves for about 1 hour .. waste of 75 rupees.

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

    1. You write above: only “cabaret” show I went for was in Pondicherry.. nearly 15 years ago.. didn’t feature topless dancers..

Ah, your life has been in vain. 🙁

What about in the U.S. – embarras de richesse here.

  11. Amy آصف Dala   March 15, 2009 at 12:28 pm

Yes, that’s where I got feel for the silicone.. wantedly selected plastic once.. confirmed my worst fears.. they don’t feel nice.

but usually used to opt for small and natural.. one of my favorite encounters was a Cameron Diaz look-alike.. Exhilarating!

In case, my wife finds the identity of Amy “Ali” Dala: No darling, I have never set foot in strip clubs since our marriage. Time to change my nick.. to cover my tracks.. I may also have to kill SI.

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

    Oh, well…Big is Bountiful.

Finally finished watching Rachel.. good one

Did you notice that this was written by Sidney Lumet’s daughter..

    http://metacritics.com/film/titles/up is spectacular, it seems..
    98% on http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/up/
time for you to watch a 3D movie.. I am planning to spend some major bucks (taking extended family) on it.. so would be happy to see how you feel about it. 🙂

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

You write: Did you notice that this was written by Sidney Lumet’s daughter..

Maybe, good filmmaking runs in the genes. No wonder the second/third generation in Bollywood and Kollywood is so awful….because their forbears were bad too.

Regarding Rachel Getting married, Anne Hathaway is easily one of the best young actresses in recent years. She held her own against the formidable Meryl Streep in Devil Wears Prada.

Regarding watching Up – not a problem. When do you plan on seeing it?

BTW, Drag Me To Hell also has good ratings on RT.

  13. Ænima   May 30, 2009 at 8:52 am

probably in the next 3 weeks.. don’t bother if you are not interested.. but all indications are that you won’t be disappointed.

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

    3 weeks?

We’ll probably see it sooner. The 98% rating on RT is intriguing.

Have seen a few 3D movies earlier – Chota Chethan and one or two others.

  14. Ænima   May 30, 2009 at 9:00 am

DMTH seems very interesting.. I like horror movies.. but this one has got universal acclaim, so probably should be watched in theater.. Wife and I will try to sneak out for this one without the kids.

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

    We might see that too.

  15. Ænima   May 30, 2009 at 10:37 am

mildly interesting story about the girl who played Sidney’s sister.

    http://www.usatoday.com/life/movies/news/2007-11-14-demme-katrina_N.htm

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

    Can’t remember her at all.
