Great Rajini Songs

It is Saturday.

And we have more time than we know what to do with.

So what better way to fritter away time than to browse YouTube watching/listening to old Rajinikanth songs.

Here are some of our Rajini favorites:

Kanmaniye Kaathal Enbathu – Featuring Rajini and the late fatafat Jayalakshmi from the movie Aaril Irunthu Arubathu Varai. One of our first night-show movies. Rajini plays a writer in this fine movie.

Vizhiyelle Malarnthathu – One of our all-time Rajini favorites from Bhuvana Oru Kelvikuri

Namma Ooru Singari – Yes, it’s from the big hit Ninaithaley inikum.

Oru Thanga Rathathil – This one is from Dharma Yutham.

O Nallane Savi Mathu – So all you clowns thought Rajinikanth is a synonym only for Tamil movies? Shows how little you know. This lovely song is from the Kannada movie Sahodarara Saval.

Oruvan Oruvan – Lovely song from Muthu.

Adi Rakamma Kaiyathattu – This is a song we listen to often on our iPhone. Rajini dances with cute Sonu Walia in the song.

Yen Uyir Neethane – You ask, which movie? Priya, have you forgotten. The song is by Yesudas and Uma Ramanan.

Athiradee – Rajinikanth with the Delhi belle Shriya Saran in the 2007 blockbuster Sivaji.

Raman Aandalum – Rajini from the old film Mullum Malarum

Ennama Kannu – Nice one featuring Rajinikanth and Satyaraj from the movie Mr.Bharat.

Naan Polladhavan – From the movie Polladhavan (we saw this movie many years back in Villupuram). This movie is a remake of the Kannada movie Premada Kanike (Rajkumar, Arthi).

Iravu Pagalum – Rajini and Sripriya from the old Billa.

Style, Style…Figure, Figure – Now for an awful song from Baasha.

Kadhalin DeepamFrom Thambikku Entha Ooru featuring Rajini and Madhavi.

Aasai Nooru Vagai. – Nice Rajini song and dance from the 1983 film Adutha Vaarisu.

One of my favorite ‘Rathiriyil Poothirukkum’ was missed out by you & mihi_rex.

Lying down in bed with your partner, with the lights off and the sheets over you, in the still of the night, you should listen to “Rathiriyil Poothirukkum..” (on your iPhone 3G) with your eyes closed, comprehending the lyrics and letting them sink in… it is bound to make a BIG difference ! – tell us after the experience…

That fact that you didn’t know it was Poornima Jayaram/Bagyraja really confuses my already addled brain. You couldn’t be Tamil.. you should have consulted your Tamil husband/wife/partner before putting up that question here.

I had a dream about you.. didn’t actually see you in the dream, but saw your “name” in a news item.. i think it was “P. Chidhambaram” or something like that.. and i think the news item was about some lawsuit against you 😉 I remember analyzing in the dream that the suer (or sewer?.. not sure of the right spelling) was Idiot.. but somehow that dream got disrupted..

Do you think I am spending too much time here? 🙂

I think the iPhones are no longer ridiculously priced.. 3 of my middle-class desis friends were waving it at a party on Sat. night. It could be because 2 of them were AT&T employees – they get it at a subsidized price aand one of them was a young dude.. who probably wasn’t yet reached the “cheap” phase of his life.
Did you know that AT&T is training many desis and retirees to climb poles in case 100000 union workers go on strike.. so don’t be alarmed when your friendly neighborhood Desi climbs on a telephone pole next week.

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

    1. You write above: That fact that you didn’t know it was Poornima Jayaram/Bagyraja really confuses my already addled brain. You couldn’t be Tamil..

Age does take its toll on the memory (although the name Poornima Jayaram does ring a bell now).

Surely, you haven’t forgotten your point in the past about our hiatus from watching Tamil movies. You suggested they were sort of like our lost decades from Kollywood.

Simple way to resolve this once for all – give us your tel no and we’ll set your ‘already addled mind’ (to use your expression) at rest about our roots in the Tamil soil. No, we won’t publish your tel no unless it’s a 900 number 😉 Two conditions, though – Call restriction for 60 seconds and no recording. 🙂

    2. With iPhone, it’s the TCO (total cost of ownership) that’s more important.

Besides the $300 (for the 16GB version), there’s the monthly service fee of about $75 (including tax) for 24 months. Total cost of iPhone and service cost over the 24 months of the contract – $2,100.00 – is definitely not something that will warm the cockles of the hearts of our cheapo desis.

Keep in mind that’s just for 450 Anytime minutes. No, that does not include Texting charges either. So, we think (like all any true cheapo desi) the iPhone is expensive.

    3. We’ve seen our desis in grocery stores (Shoprite, Pathmark et al), discount stores (Walmart), gas stations, panhandling (begging..in Jackson Heights, NYC)…

So climbing an AT&T pole is not really that big a comedown for our desis…it could even be considered a climbup of sorts.

Your lost decade I was talking about was the 90s.. Poornima was a kanavu kanni in the early 80s (your ganja days).. was a top heroine in both Malayalam (Manjil Virinja Pookkal may also ring your bell.. ) and Tamil..

You should have surely heard these songs if you were in TN during the early 80s.

She is also the kid featured in this video

(just kidding.. played this on Rock Band last week.. total riot!.. Rock Band (or Guitar Hero) creates an awesome delusion that you can actually play the guitar and drums to this song(and to many other rock songs that I adore!)

You have my email address on file.. can you please email it to me from your iPhone. 🙂 I am not a big fan of telephone calls.

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

You write above: I am not a big fan of telephone calls.

    Enna bayama irukka (Turned chicken)?

Ilaiyanila pozhigirathe is a lovely song…heard that a billion times (OK, OK make that a million times).

BTW, just back from RedBox…didn’t see Twilight or Slumdog Millionaire.

  9. I. M. Legend   March 30, 2009 at 1:22 pm

    Another great Poornima(or should I say Illayarajah/S. Janaki) song(with Amol Palekar) ..

    or the Tamil version

Not sure which one was first.. apparently IR liked it so much that this song made it to Telugu too.

  10. I. M. Legend   March 30, 2009 at 4:28 pm

Only as scared as you.. Look at Asha.. she has put her picture up and given her real name.. may be if we are good-looking too we would do the same. 😉

SDM doesn’t come until tomorrow, no?

I saw a Twilight DVD, but picked up Demi Moore’s 80s classic – “About Last Night” http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/about_last_night/

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

    1. Excuses, excuses, excuses…lily-livered poltroons have ’em aplenty in their satchel when someone dares to pick up the gauntlet they throw in fond hopes that no one’ll call their bluff.

Well, we called your bluff and tail between your legs you ran back to your fox-hole.

We give you yet another opportunity – Pass the tel no and we’ll prove our Tamil roots or forever hold your peace. 😉

    2. We picked up Before the Devil Knows, You’re Dead.

How can one forget “Kadhalin Deepam” from Thambiki endha oru ?

SPB’s youthful voice at it’s best..

Seldom they film a romantic love solo on rajni.

Usually they were reserved for the poker faced mohan..

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

Since multiple readers have recommended Kadhalin Deepam, we’ve added it to the list above. Does anyone remember what happened to Madhavi?

Now, you can watch the Kamal Songs and follow that up with YouTube videos featuring the late Sivaji Ganesan.

  13. elnino.aurora   April 5, 2009 at 11:47 pm

    Agree with Oruvan Oruvan.

Kadhalin deepam ondru is one of my alltime favorites.

You missed out on Raagangal Padhinaru from Thillu Mullu though. An absolute pleasure to listen, and watch. Beautiful rendition.

Another number you missed out on- (probably a cult classic for many, many ppl of the 1970s n 80s generation)- Aasai Nooru Vagai.

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

Aasai Nooru Vagai is one of our favorites too. Don’t know how we missed it. Thanks.

We’ve updated the above list to include Aasai Nooru Vagai.
