Should a gaggle of rustic ambattans (barbers) suddenly decide to forsake their razors for the camera, the end result would be infinitely better than this grotesque abomination called Thoranai.

Save the unsavory feat of shaving a few unwary souls of their money and time, Thoranai’s sole claim to fame is that the crappy movie marks a new low from the augean stables of GK Film Corporation.

Devoid of any entertainment, bereft of anything resembling music and wholly lacking in quality, Thoranai is the the latest Kollywood synonym for garbage.

There were all of a dozen people for the 3:15PM show of Thoranai at Movie City in Edison, New Jersey on a Saturday.

Perhaps, the news had already spread fast even to this corner of the world that this is one trashy movie to steer clear of.

No Redeeming Elements
Ask not what’s wrong with Thoranai. Ask if there’s anything right at all with this dungheap of a movie.

An asinine story that tests the patience of viewers, bizarre stunt scenes that mock the laws of physics, dancing that ridicules the notion of grace and sophomoric comedy that plumb the depths of trash, Thoranai is a mind-numbing horror show. No more and certainly no less. Continue reading »

Time for another edition of Incredible India.

* 62 years after the Brits said good riddance to their largest colony and packed their bags, the average monthly income for an Indian is $66 (Rs 3,116).

According to the numbers put out by the country’s Central Statistical Organisation today, India has a per capita income of about $794 (about Rs 37,490 for 12 months), This figure is at currrent prices for 2008-2009.

By the way, we must add for the benefit of some of our schmuck readers that the per capita income is for a full year (here, read more about per capita income here). So, that’s $794 for a full year.

Pathetic. Just pathetic.

Alas, when you look at the per capita income at constant prices (i.e. at 1999-2000 prices) during 2008-09, the figure drops to a pitiful Rs. 25,494 ($540). Try living on $540 for a full year, even in India. Continue reading »

A white New York City policeman shot and killed a black policeman as he was chasing a suspect (likely Hispanic going by the name) in the predominantly Hispanic Manhattan neighborhood of East Harlem last night.

Both NYPD cops were in plainclothes.

It’s not known if the white cop identified himself as a cop before shooting the black cop, who was holding a gun, or asked the black cop to drop the gun.

For details, see this NYPost story or the NYT piece.
