Watching Born into Brothels

In the fading hours, we can’t remember who recommended this documentary. But someone definitely did.

A short while ago, as we were stalking the byways of Netflix’ cavernous film collection we stumbled on this documentary and added it to our Instant Play queue (for play via broadband directly to TV).

Directed by Ross Kauffman and Zana Briski, Born into Brothels is an Oscar-winning documentary that looks at the life of children as their mothers sweat it out in the brothels of Kolkata.

We’ll update this post after we finish watching this 83-minute long documentary.

Just saw Pasanga. Nice movie!! And when is Wolverine releasing worldwide? How is it?

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

Pasanga – Vimal, Vega Tamotia and Jeyaprakash…Not familiar with these actors.

Wolverine – saw the previews (trailers) a few times…didn’t like what we saw…So skipped it.

wifey said that it was too depressing.. i didn’t watch it (mostly because I was uninterested rather than “sensitive”)
Do uninterested and disinterested mean the same?

someone probably may have mentioned that it won an Academy Award for Documentary Feature in 2004..
    or
    was it this

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

    1. Yes, thanks for the link.

    2. Now we know what “put her in the line” means.

Depressing? Yes, but much of India is depressing. Truth be said the human condition itself is for the most part dreary and depressing.

    3. Disinterested and uninterested are not the same.

    Uninterested = not interested, indifference.

Disinterested = lack of vested interest, impartial.

You can express interest in an issue and yet be disinterested. Example: judges usually have no personal stake in a case before them or as the Americans would say no skin in the game.

    Here’s a not-so-great example of usage:

Judges must be disinterested in the cases before them but evince great interest in every case in the interest of upholding the law.

I heard Pasanga is good. [Previously mentioned too in comments]..
Fully based on school kids and events revolving around them.. If you are not familiar with the actors, you meant you may not watch the movies? All the recent good movies came up with only new-faces, since the top-heroes don’t come out of their ‘image’ circle. If you watch these newly coming good movies [by new-directors], you may better understand the changing face of Tamil film industry.

And, don’t forget to answer the doubts raised in this news clip – by makkal tv:

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

    1. YouTube wants us to verify we’re 18 or over to view the video. Will do it later.

    2. We don’t think Pasanga made it to East Coast.

u said u would review Funny Games within 7 days. where is it?

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

Next in our Netflix list. If Netflix had not sent us one wrong movie, we’d have finished viewing Funny Games by now. Hopefully we should get it on Monday.

Unfortunately, none of the Blockbusters in a radius of 15 miles has it. So, get back to bed now. Way past your bedtime. 😉

BTW, Terminator Salvation was crap. Review coming soon.

oh, i thought so @ terminator
its still pretty early here…why? have you hit the curfew at your senior living center? =)

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

We are old but not that old, kiddo.

    i watched Angels & Demons.
    its wonderful.

Especially the background score is amazing.
Though I can’t say all the events happened in the movie without subtitles, I liked it more than DVC.

Hanks rox, though Hasan would do it better.

Update on my comment above is pending..

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

    Watched the video.

Hard to say anything with certainty about Prabhakaran’s death because as the video says, in 1989 too there was talk of Prabhakaran’s death. And a year later, it was found to be inaccurate.

Since India has been against LTTE since Rajiv Gandhi’s brutal murder by LTTE, Prabhakaran surely did not/does not consider India an ally. Because of Kashmir, Al Qaeda too has no love for India. We’ll have to wait and see if the remnants of the LTTE team up with other outfits like Al Qaeda now.
