We first heard about this Alfred Hitchcock movie in our childhood from a parent who had the habit of watching English movies.

But we never got a chance of seeing this movie because that was an age when VCRs and DVDs were still well into the future.

And to expect a theater in Tamil Nadu to screen a 1954 English movie was pretty unrealistic.

As time went by, we completely forgot about this movie.

After coming to the U.S. too, we never once thought of seeing this legendary movie until some SI readers suggested it recently.

Fortunately, Netflix has this movie in its Instant Collection (which means you can watch it directly on your TV via a Roku, Xbox or TiVo device through a broadband connection).

It’s one of the many mysteries of life as to why desis don’t sign up to the $9/month Netflix plan that gives them access to a cornucopia of 100,000 DVD titles and another 12,000 titles in its Instant Play section.

Hailed as one of the all-time great thrillers, Dial M for Murder features the ethereally beautiful Grace Kelly, Ray Milland and Robert Cummings.

We’ll update this post later tonight after watching the movie.

Update:

Is there such a thing as a perfect murder?

Or does it exist only on paper? Continue reading »

We have just popped into our DVD player 99, a movie we got free a few weeks back after purchasing $30 worth grocery in the new Indian grocery store opened by some Punjabis.

As with other freebies, we had consigned it to the back of our home theatre system until some SI readers suggested it was a decent movie.

The film features Kunal Khemu, Soha Ali Khan, Boman Irani and Mahesh Manjrekar among others. These are without doubt decent actors in an industry rife with Abhisekhs and Kareenas.

Krishna DK and Raj Nidimoru (never heard of the duo before) are the directors of 99.

We’ll update this post later tonight after watching the movie.

Update:
Easily one of the better Bollywood movies we’ve watched in 2009.

A comedy about two small time criminals Kunal Khemu and Cyrus Broacha accidentally caught in the net of a bookie shark (Mahesh Manjrekar) and cricket match fixing, 99 is a wild rollercoaster ride.

And along for the entertaining ride is betting addict Boman Irani. Soha Ali Khan is also around, but she’s mostly irrelevant to the plot.

To say that Boman Irani, Kunal Khemu and Cyrus Broacha have done a stellar job in 99 would be an understatement.

In the interests of the happy endings that Indians must have in their movies, the last 10 minutes or so is a bit screwed up.

But that’s a minor complaint. Not a big deal.

Go, watch this movie.

After watching the old Amitabh Bachchan blockbuster Deewar (1975), the first thought that came to mind was that a key reason why most Bollywood movies are crap is because the people involved in them – the actors, story/screenplay writers, directors, producers et al are not hungry (there’s of course the matter of many of them lacking any talent whatsoever).

Most of the current lot in Bollywood (Abhishek Bachchan, Kareena Kapoor, Sanjay Dutt, Tushar Kapoor, Fardeen Khan et al) either come from film families or like Amitabh Bachchan, Shahrukh Khan and Akshay Kumar have tasted enough success/fame to last several lifetimes.

In either case, they lack the hunger for money, fame and success that drives talent (even of the middling  kind) to climb to great heights.

Deewar was made when Amitabh Bachchan had still not reached his prime. And that shows in his fine performance.

If Amitabh Bachchan is remembered for just one film in his long career, it’s for his solid portrayal of a negative role in Deewar. Continue reading »

via iPhone:

Sitting at Jose’s Border Cafe (Tex-Mex cuisine).

It’s 1:40 PM ET and the place is fairly crowded.

People are still eating out a lot notwithstanding what the analysts would have you believe.

Free WiFi, cool.

We like the Margaritas (not allowed today) :( and the Vegetable Jambalaya here.

Nice salsa & yummy tangy sauce with Yucatan Plaintain.

Update:

Border Cafe – Decent Place

We’ve been going to Border Cafe for over eight years and have rarely been disappointed.

The food is decent, portions large, prices reasonable and the service pleasing.

Our waiter asked us if we wanted water with ice, something Indian restaurants never do although desis seldom drink water with ice cubes. They didn’t charge us for extra helpings of salsa and the tangy sauce that came with the Yucatan Plaintain.

All of the food tasted fresh and landed hot on our table, not the lukewarm junk the surly desi waiters often plonk down on your table at Indian restaurants.

By the way, Border Cafe has outposts in New Jersey, Delaware and Massachusetts.

Nice change from our recent visits to crappy Indian restaurants like Rangoli and Angeethi.

For obvious reasons, we are watching the Taiwanese film Three Times now.

Directed by Hou Hsiao-Hsie, Three Times is a Mandarin language film featuring three separate love stories set in different periods.

Released in 2005, the movie was well received by critics (as if what critics say matters anymore in the age of Kambakkht Ishq).

Three Times was nominated for the Palme d’Or at the 2005 Cannes Film Festival. It won the Best Taiwanese Film award at the 2005 Golden Horse film festival.

After watching the movie, we’ll update this post later tonight.

Update
Is Three Times a great movie?

No, we don’t think so.

But it most definitely is a different kind of movie.

Not your father’s Bollywood or Hollywood romance.

There are three separate love stories set in 1966, 1911 and 2005 (in that order in the movie) featuring the same pair of actors.

The acting is good. No complaints on that front.

The stories are not bad.

We are unsure if we should tell you an interesting tidbit concerning the movie.

What the heck, we’ll do it anyway. In the second story, set in Dadaocheng of 1911, there’s no sound at all through the entire episode. You can see the actors speaking but you won’t hear any sound.

The words flash on the screen in Mandarin accompanied by a pleasing background music.

Interesting technique. We didn’t find it jarring.
