Incredible India 36: Raj Thackeray is a Sick Fellow; Sack the MNS MLAs

Un’f*cking’believable.

Only in India, folks.

Only in India can a legislator be assaulted inside the Legislative Assembly for daring to take the oath in Hindi, the country’s national language.

SP legislator Abu Azmi was beaten up inside the Maharashtra Assembly today by some legislators belonging to Raj Thackeray’s MNS party for taking the oath in Hindi.

Disgusting.

Raj’s goons were upset that Abu Azmi was not taking the oath in Marathi, one of the local languages of Maharashtra.

You can watch the nonsense here.

The MNS legislators who brought shame to Maharashtra should not merely be suspended but dismissed and prosecuted.

And people say India is a country whose time has come. Ha ha ha.

Mera Bharat Mahaan.

    Disgusting!

It only reflects the insecurity, rather than any ‘patriotism’ from the side of MNS.

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

Isn’t there any security inside the Assembly hall.

Just you watch, the MNS MLAs will create more havoc inside the Assembly.

    FYI,
    [link deleted]

One of the best blogs. He rapes everybody in style if you look at all his posts. That is what I called raping. Probably you should learn raping instead of just shouting 🙂

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

The blog you mentioned in the link is plain rubbish.

Its facts are wrong and justifications for failure dumb.

  3. Bhagat_Singh   November 9, 2009 at 4:50 pm

Can you atleast show us that link mentioned above and let us judge its content? I am curious

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

    1. No, because that’s link spam in our not-so-humble opinion.

    2. You write: I am curious

Why? Because the other commenter used the word ‘raping’ twice??

  4. deepa   November 9, 2009 at 10:25 pm

Wow!! Didn’t realize how serious this goons are about the the language.

Do you remember Jaya Bachan was also criticized because she said she wasn’t so fluent in Marathi and then when I watched Kaminey and you see Shahid getting hit because he called Mumbai as Bombay, i just thought it was part of the movie and then i read somewhere that Karan Johar was in trouble because some actors in Wake Up Sid called Bombay as Mumbai. I guess Vishal Bhardwaj was correct in highlighting in the movie when the gangster brother says I’m Indian before I’m Marathi when in actual truth, he wasn’t’.

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

    1. That Raj Thackeray is a total whacko.

    2. Since Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan are from outside Bombay, they ‘earned’ the ire of the goons.

    3. Listening to Dhan Te Nan in the background. 😉

  5. shadowfax_arbit   November 9, 2009 at 11:40 pm

Raj Thackeray is a sick b*stard. Why in the world would someone even vote for this shameless illiterate goon?

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

You write above: Why in the world would someone even vote for this shameless illiterate goon?

The same reason people vote for Republican scumbags in the U.S – because people are STUPID.

  6. SRINIVAS   November 10, 2009 at 1:36 am

Expelling all the four MLA’s for a period of 4 yrs is the right thing to do ….Hopefully Raj will indulge in more such nonsense and dig his own grave….

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

Suspension is a good first step.

They should be prosecuted now or do legislators enjoy enjoy immunity from prosecution for any acts inside the Legislative Assembly.

  7. ratnakar   November 10, 2009 at 4:55 am

Abu Azmi’s boss Mulayam Yadav, had made a ruckus, when Jairam Ramesh, spoke in English in parliament. I guess what goes around comes back to you.

BTW no sympathies for Abu Azmi (not that i support the MNS), bastard is a crook, cavorting with likes of Dawood Ibrahim, looting half of Mumbai. This incident will make that asshole an undeserving hero in the Media.

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

Abu Azmi may be scum otherwise but this is a separate issue.

Though it’s very tempting, we ought to resist the temptation to turn a nelson’s eye to such nonsense like what we witnessed in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly yesterday.

Think of someone taking a oath in Hindi in the Tamilnadu Assembly, wouldn’t this situation repeat?

Locally elected representatives need to respect and value local culture..

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

    1. You write above: Locally elected representatives need to respect and value local culture..

Aren’t there instances of people taking oath in English in the Tamil Nad Assembly?

But assaulting a man for taking the oath in Hindi is beyond the pale, even by the low Indian standards.

    2. You write: Locally elected representatives need to respect and value local culture..

That’s a slippery and dangerous road, unless we take great care.

Today local culture is epitomized by Marathi language. So, let’s slap others who speak in Hindi or English.

Tomorrow, the local culture is epitomized by the dominant religion, i.e. Hinduism. So, let’s harass those who are Muslims or Christians.

The day after, the local culture will dictate that women should not wear jeans, should not work outside and so on. So, let’s force them to wear the ghunghat and make cow-dung patties at home.

If we don’t curb such nonsense today, we’ll be confronted with Taliban-like whackos in the future.

@SI: …for daring to take the oath in Hindi, the country’s national language.

    — not to stir a debate.. but Hindi is not the national language of India.. 😉
Just like your favorite country USA does not have a national language, India too doesn’t have one.

Google it to find the truth.. 🙂
And all the teachers in our school taught Hindi is the national language of India.

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

You write: — not to stir a debate.. but Hindi is not the national language of India..

Lo, here comes the nitpicking idiot savant engaging in a futile semantic battle.

Tis’ true that we don’t call Hindi the national language in actual words.

According to Article 343 of the Indian Constitution, Hindi is the Official Language.

Presumably, the framers of the constitution did not use the word ‘national’ to avoid irritating the ‘lungis and gultis’ (as one SI reader recently referred to South Indians 😉 ) and resorted to the less nettlesome word ‘official.’

Surely, given the text of the Indian constitution most sensible people can justifiably argue that official and national may be treated as synonyms here.

Please see below the Articles 343 and 351 of the Indian Constitution and then come back to argue that Hindi is not the national language:

    343. (1) The official language of the Union shall be Hindi in Devanagari script.

    351. It shall be the duty of the Union to promote the spread of the Hindi language, to develop it so that it may serve as a medium of expression for all the elements of
the composite culture of India and to secure its enrichment by assimilating without interfering with its genius, the forms, style and expressions used in Hindustani and in the other languages of India specified in the Eighth Schedule, and by drawing, wherever necessary or desirable, for its vocabulary, primarily on Sanskrit and secondarily on other languages.

    Mera Bharat Mahaan. 😉

Dear SI, Although I follow your posts with fervor and enthusiasm, it takes courage to accept mistakes.

@SI – Surely, given the text of the Indian constitution most sensible people can justifiably argue that official and national may be treated as synonyms here.

i m amused at the way you bend the rules to fit your idealogies.

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

    1. You write: i m amused at the way you bend the rules to fit your idealogies (sic).

At all times, we’ve tried to support our arguments with facts.

In this instance too, we quoted from the relevant Articles of the Indian Constitution, which describe Hindi as the ‘Official Language’ and call for its promotion.

Anyone reading the two articles and the least bit familiar with Indian history of the last 62 years would have little doubt that ‘official’ and ‘national’ are substitutable words i.e. synonyms.

    2. You write: it takes courage to accept mistakes.

True, provided one was made in the first place.

  11. medytrance   November 10, 2009 at 10:43 am

I tried to imagine what Gandhiji would have done if he were in Abu Azmi’s place and there were pressure on him to take the oath in a language he didn’t know, and I got the answer that he would have happily taken the oath in the regional language and moved on, not because he wouldn’t have the courage to face his unreasoning opponents, but because there would be work to be done after the oath.

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

    1. You write: I tried to imagine what Gandhiji would have done if he were in Abu Azmi’s place

The poor man would never hanker for such trifles as MLAs, MPs or Ministerships.

But assuming Bapu was in Abu Azmi’s place, he’d most likely tell the MNS goons to do whatever they wished with him.

    2. To your larger point of whether Gandhiji was a pragmatist or idealist, it’s hard to answer this question. Perhaps, there is no definitive answer.

But given what we know of India, the British, divisions within India, the power of the state et al, Gandhiji was perhaps more of a pragmatist in his actions, than people give him credit for.

  12. SRINIVAS   November 11, 2009 at 12:49 am

SI : Surely, given the text of the Indian constitution most sensible people can justifiably argue that official and national may be treated as synonyms here.

you have got it wrong …..its not national BUT Official ….and there is a huge difference ….

Official means all work/correspondence / Exams etc etc should / can be done in Hindi at the central govt level …..it simply means if I am a north Indian whose mother tongue is Hindi ….i stand to benefit ….i can give the exams in Hindi which makes it easier for me to get through ……while others are told …..Oh you have English as a option ….AS IF ENGLISH IS THEIR MOTHER TONGUE ….. this Hindi does not leave them ….and it follows them even after they get through …..for day to day work….promotions etc ….there are rules wherein a person from a non-hindi speaking state has to learn Hindi within the first six months / year …..failing which his promotions etc will be withheld …. ( i will search and get the link to substantiate this)

The above must be understood not my taking people in this blog as an example …..but by understanding that India lives in villages …..hence the vast majority is comfortable with their mother tongue …every other language comes after that …….

Its precisely this which was/is the sore point and hence Tamil Nadu opposed Hindi …..

Hindi does not unite …..but it divides ….When a Raj Thackeray complains that Railways are full of North Indians …..the point being missed out is that ….they are there everywhere …..and will continue to be …..not because they are much more capable or intelligent …..but because they start with a advantage …….

Indians are very good at counting ….on the basis of caste / religion / language ….what TN is saying ….will soon be said by others in different ways …..When a State sees its representation falling at the central level ….it will start shouting ….and eventually it will take a different turn ….

Hindi being taught or used for day to day communication between people in India is different ….as a country if we need a national language ….hindi is the best …since its the largest spoken ……..TAMIL NADU WAS THE FIRST ONE TO TEACH HINDI ……..BUT WHEN IT BECAME A OFFICIAL LANGUAGE >>>IT WAS DUMPED >>>>

Racism is but natural in such a diverse country ….Lungi and Gultis …… Bhaiyya for North Indians …..Deshpande (Desh KA Sabse Bada Pandu). Ghaati, Tatya .. for a Maharashtrian ….the list can go on and on ….if you look at the trend …..Marathis are the most racist of the lot …….but that’s really not the issue ….because its informal …..but when discrimination is institutionalised ….by way of laws ….in the constitution …..that’s a big issue

Karunanidhi does not insists that (outsiders) in TN should speak in Tamil ….DMK does not go about beating people on this issue …..unlike a Mulayam Singh / Raj Thackeray …….though I wish ….we should retaliate in the same coin ….especially with a marathi / and Samajwadi party supporters ..

Asking your own kith and kin ..community to take pride in your identity is different …….which DMK /Bengalis do ……from threatening everybody else to learn your mother tongue or face the consequences ….which north indians and Pandu’s are doing ….

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

    1. True, as we conceded earlier the Indian Constitution uses the word ‘Official’ and not ‘National.’

But that distinction gets eroded in peoples minds given Hindi’s status as the most widely spoken ‘regional’ language in India.

    2. As one SI reader (unknownvirus) noted even school teachers in India are misled into teaching their brood that Hindi is the National Language of India:

And all the teachers in our school taught Hindi is the national language of India.

When teachers mistakenly think that way, what then to say of the laity.

    3. So de facto, ‘National’ and ‘Official’ are distinctive words without a difference.

    4. Yes, language like any other primordial affiliation is a divisive force.

    5. You write: Racism is but natural in such a diverse country

True, given the inherent nature of most humans to seek and find comfort in like colored/like thinking/like speaking/like-caste/like religion fellow-humans. But it’s the duty of the state to ensure that such feelings remain internal to the people and does not disturb the lives of fellow humans around them. This is where India fails the acid test. Example: Gujarat’s anti-Muslim pogrom.

  13. SRINIVAS   November 11, 2009 at 6:57 am

@ SI: But it’s the duty of the state to ensure that such feelings remain internal to the people and does not disturb the lives of fellow humans around them. This is where India fails the acid test. Example: Gujarat’s anti-Muslim pogrom.

Some more examples: Ethnic cleansing of Hindus in Kashmir, Mumbai Blasts and All those blasts which take place at regular intervals ….

State will fail ….till such time that we have terrorists in the garb of minorities who masquerade as citizens of India …Ex : Burning of train in Godhra by the common man ….

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

    1. Gujarat was a state-sanctioned/state-ignored massacre of an ethnic group but the examples you cite are not. That’s a big difference.

    2. As for Kashmir, Indian paramilitary forces and Army (consisting of mostly Hindus) have committed considerable atrocities on the local Muslims that have been well documented by the NGOs and human rights agencies.

    3. The frequent blasts in India often have Pakistan’s hand behind them…yet we are unable to adequately respond to those incidents save the ‘we strongly condemn’ nonsense.

  14. SRINIVAS   November 12, 2009 at 1:40 am

While Hindus were being killed in Kashmir ….Abdullah was playing golf …..those who killed or indulged in Ethnic cleansing of Hindus were kashmiri muslims (JKLF …Yasin Malik …today the Hurriyat Conference ) …..to blame it on Pak alone is being naive …..it was very much a state-sanctioned/state-ignored massacre …..they are very clear that the state will be a Islamic State ……and that state wants further autonomy …..Omar Abdullah’s solution for the problem consists of a separate flag ..separate anthem …etc..

States can fight against terrorists ….they will always find it difficult ….when their own minority citizens behave like terrorists ……When the state is unable to protect or bring the culprits to justice …..the majority will react in a way they deem fit ….

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

Yes, we remember reading of Hindu Pandits leaving the Valley en masse and resettling in places like Delhi and even as far as Mumbai and Pune.

Kashmir is now an inviolable part of India. Any concessions at this stage would be perceived as weakness, both outside and inside India.

  15. joeantony   November 13, 2009 at 6:16 am

Un’f*cking’ly believable that more than 10 MLAs from this gunda party has been elected, fk those marati racists who voted them.

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

The same morons who vote for BJP or Shiv Sena.

Fortunately, both BJP and Shiv Sena are now in ICU, gasping for breath.

There must be a Ram, after all. 😉

The Abu Azmi Slapgate scandal in Legislative Assembly was really a shameful incident. Such unruly behavior was a first in Maharashtra Legislative Assembly. But, it must be pointed out that both MNS and Abu Azmi are responsible for it. In fact, it was Abu Azmi who made a request for official documents in Hindi beforehand, knowing fully that MNS would respond as Marathi was the hot favorite topic of 2009 Maharashtra elections. There were 4 oaths in languages other than Marathi. 2 were in Hindi (excluding Abu Azmi’s), 1 in Sanskrit, and 1 in English. No such furor was created by MNS MLA’s. Clearly, it was stunt as both are eying BMC Municipal Elections (a Shiv Sena bastion). Currently, there are 7 ‘Nagar Seveks’ from SP and none from MNS.

I am from Mumbai and a Maharashtrian. I normally communicate in Hindi as it became a common language between my friends from North, South and also from Maharashtra. Since, I normally commute in Hindi and also am very fluent in Hindi, many a times I am mistaken for a North Indian. But, now I speak mostly in Marathi coz there is lot of hate simmering amongst Maharashtrians against the North Indians (‘bhaiyyas’ as they are called here). A Hindi speaking guy has to bear the brunt in the public. Verbal Abuses are thrown at North Indians in trains and buses. This is becoming worse day by day.

MNS has been successfully able to divert the attention of people from State’s important problems (Electricity, Farmer Suicides, Inflation) to the ‘Marathi issue’. As a result, the Congress-NCP has given its tacit support to it for hiding its own failures.

A popular marathi news channel ‘IBN Lokmat’ conducted a survey among people about the Azmi incident. 95% of the people supported MNS for its act. Shockingly, the MNS ‘heroes’ Ram Kadam, Shishir Shinde, Anant Geete have no regrets about the incident. The popularity of MNS is growing day by day with such acts. Clearly, the Raj Thackeray is the new Fuhrer of Maharashtra. These are not best of the times, but worst of the times in Maharashtra.

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

    1. You write: both MNS and Abu Azmi are responsible for it

Even if Abu Azmi had engaged in action to provoke MNS, what the MNS goons did inside the hall was beyond the pale.

    2. You write: MNS has been successfully able to divert the attention of people from State’s important problems

We have a similar situation in the U.S.. The Republican represents only the interests of the economic elite but every once in a while they pick up wedge issues like abortion, church/religion, race, Socialism or other such nonsense to pool the wool over the White schmucks here.

    3. You write: A popular marathi news channel ‘IBN Lokmat’ conducted a survey among people about the Azmi incident. 95% of the people supported MNS for its act.

That’s probably because the MNS goes around telling voters/people that their problems are caused by outsiders taking their jobs, houses, brides et al.

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

Yeah, we saw this news item the other day. Only in Incredible India, folks.

As long as Priyanka Gandhi is real in Delhi, we are happy. 😉

We couldn’t care less about the 22,800 or 100,000 capital ghosts.
