The Centers for Disease Control has put out a study saying that Black women in the 14-49 age group have the highest rate of Herpes Simplex Virus type 2 (HSV-2) in America.
No kidding, jerks.
And for the benefit of all ye schmucks, HSV-2 is an incurable infection that can cause recurrent and painful genital sores.
According to the CDC, Black women (in the 14-49 age group) are the most affected HSV-2 category in America with a prevalence rate of 48%.
So if the HSV-2 prevalence rate is 48% for Black women (in the 14-49 age group) it’d be fair to assume that for Black hoochie mommas the infection rate is likely to be much higher than 48%.
Right, na?
The CDC’s numbers put out on Tuesday at the 2010 National STD Prevention Conference are based on a national health survey from 2005-2008.
The survey found that the U.S. herpes rate remains high with 1 in 6 Americans between the ages of 14 and 49 infected with the HSV-2.
The 16.2% HSV-2 prevalence rate is not much lower than the 17% HSV-2 prevalence rate registered in CDC’s previous survey for 199-2004. The very modest decline is not statistically significant at all.
Depressing Numbers
The CDC study finds that women and blacks were most likely to be infected with HSV-2 with the prevalence rate in women (20.9%, i.e. 1 in 5) almost twice that of men (11.5%, ie. 1 in 9).
There is also a race dimension here.
Hey, this is America. Isn’t race just beneath the surface here like caste in India.
The HSV-2 prevalence rate is over three times higher among blacks (39.2%) compared to whites (12.3%).
And as we said earlier, Black women, have the highest prevalence rate – 48%.
The CDC folks explain that as with other sexually transmitted diseases, biological factors likely make women more susceptible to HSV-2 infection.
Here’s Dr. Kevin Fenton, director of CDC’s National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and TB Prevention blah blahing on the subject:
This study serves as a stark reminder that herpes remains a common and serious health threat in the United States. Everyone should be aware of the symptoms, risk factors, and steps that can be taken to prevent the spread of this lifelong and incurable infection. We are particularly concerned about persistent high rates of herpes among African-Americans, which is likely contributing to disproportionate rates of HIV in the black community.
More Likely to get HIV
By the way, those with herpes are two to three times more likely to acquire HIV (the AIDS-causing virus).
Apparently, herpes can also make HIV-infected individuals more likely to transmit HIV to others.
CDC estimates that over 80% of those with HSV-2 are unaware of their infection.
Scary thought, eh.
Wonder how many of you schmucks are unaware of your dormant ‘gift.’

It seems symptoms may be absent, mild, or even mistaken for another condition. Yes, people with HSV-2 can transmit the virus even if they have no visible sores or other symptoms.

From the news story/interview on NPR, I gathered that the above statement is more a correlation than causation. folks who get herpes get it because they practice unsafe sex and are hence more likely to get other related diseases.
