Short Takes: Read My Lips & Crimson Rivers

Since we’ve been in a French mood for the last couple of weeks, we followed up A Prophet with Battle of Algiers and two more FrenchiesRead My Lips and The Crimson Rivers.

Both Read My Lips and Crimson Rivers are nice movies but Read My Lips is without doubt the superior movie.

* Read My Lips: Directed by Jacques Audiard (also the director of A Prophet), Read My Lips is a pleasing film about what happens when a stressed out deaf, single secretary at a Paris construction firm hires an ex-convict as her assistant.

A work of beauty with an off-beat story, this is a must watch film marked by a solid performance from Emmanuelle Devos as the secretary Carla and ably supported by Victor Cassel as her assistant.

* The Crimson Rivers: This is a crime movie featuring Jean Reno and Vincent Cassel as two cops chasing a vicious serial killer in a small university town in the French Alps.

We could guess the identity of the killer but the ending, though, still turned out to be bizarre.

Reno is not unfamiliar to both American and Indian audiences. We’ve seen him alongside Robert De Niro in Ronin and as the assassin in Leon (remade by our Bollywood bozos as Bichoo).
