Sure, Indian movies are mostly unwatchable horror shows but it’s also important to remember that not all fine movies emerge from Hollywood.

Oftentimes, some of the finest movies have come from across the pond.

Three foreign movies that have attracted a great deal of attention in recent months are Of Gods and Men, In a Better World and Biutiful.

Since we have already reviewed Biutiful, we won’t dwell upon it here again but will instead pay homage in this post to Of Gods and Men and In a Better World.

In a Better World, winner of Best Foreign Film Oscar this year, is a Danish movie directed by Susanne Bier.

Readers of the extraordinary SearchIndia.com blog are, of course, no strangers to Susanne Bier since we  reviewed one of her movies After the Wedding a couple of years back.

We’ve read one review of In a Better World (New Yorker, April 4, 2011, p.82-83) and going by that we’ll say the movie is not a feel-good time pass or action movie.

Au contraire, In a Better World is a movie that defies categorization into a neat pigeonhole of a genre.

Set in both Africa and Denmark, the movie explores violence, alienation, revenge, loneliness, sorrow, relationships and so many human emotions. All in 119 minutes.

We could tell you more but we won’t so that you don’t miss the beautiful element of surprise that, alas, is often not available to reviewers who read other reviews before watching a movie.

William Jøhnk Nielsen, who plays the Christian, one of two young boys with prominent roles in the film, has come in for lavish praise from some reviewers. Anthony Lane writes in the New Yorker:

Nielsen, in particular, turns the role of Christian into a drama all its own. He does something that would defeat actors three times his age; he starts off as handsome cub, and somehow loses his looks – or, at any rate, allows the inward snarl of desolation and wrath to steal across his face and wipe away the final trace of innocence. “Grownups look like children when they’re dead,” he says, from dreadful experience. And children who have witnessed death, we learn, grow up in front of our eyes.

By the way, In a Better World also won Best Foreign Language Film at the 68th Golden Globe Awards.

In a Better World has not made it to theaters yet and so we’ll have to wait for a short while to see this acclaimed gem.

Of Gods and Men
This French film came to our notice courtesy the Wall Street Journal, where Joe Morgenstern didn’t stint in his praise, calling it ‘one of the most beautiful movies I know.’

Directed by Xavier Beauvois and featuring French actors Lambert Wilson and Michael Lonsdale, Of Gods and Men is about a bunch of Christian monks at an Algerian monastery threatened by Islamic terrorists.

Well, the subject certainly has some resonance given the violent times we live in.

By the way, the movie is said to be based on a true story touching upon some unpleasant events in 1995.

Here’s an excerpt from Morgenstern’s review:

More than anything, “Of Gods and Men” is a drama of character, and warm humanity. The terrorists are brutes, but recognizably human brutes. Father Christian is admirable, but not always accessible. (Or even comprehensible: after one of Christian’s teachings, Luc asks a brother, with sly humor, if he understood any of it.) Father Amédée has little to say—he may lack the clarity to say it—but his wide eyes and wizened face bespeak a lifetime of devotion. The most vivid character is Father Luc, and not only because Mr. Lonsdale is one of the great actors of our time. Luc personifies love. He loved women, he tells the village girl, until he found a greater love and responded to it. That response resonates, without a sound, in an exquisite moment that finds the weary old man touching—almost snuggling with—the figure of an anguished Christ on a monastery wall.

Of Gods and Men is already playing in select theaters in the U.S. and, God willing, we’ll see it one of these days and review it for you schmucks.

If you vaguely remember hearing that Of Gods and Men has won some big awards, you’re right.

The film won the Grand Prix, the second most prestigious award at the Cannes Festival. Of Gods and Men also won the César Awards 2011 for Best Film, Lonsdale as Best Supporting Actor and Best Cinematography. Of Gods and Men was France’s official entry for Best Foreign Language Film at the 83rd Academy Awards, but failed to make the final shortlist (Source: Wiki).

Wrong – India has two national obsessions in Cricket and Bollywood

Right
- India has three national obsessions in Cricket, Bollywood and Breeding.

Indian Breeding Frenzy
Folks, the provisional numbers from the Indian government’s Census 2011 are out and they are horrifying – India’s population has grown by over 181 million during the decade 2001-2011 to 1.21 billion.

* Are India’s Hindus and Muslims hell-bent on increasing their respective numbers to wage the coming Holy War?

* Is it the tropical climate that induces Indians into a perennial priapic fury?

* Are bored Indian couples just relentlessly shoving, grinding and thrusting their sweating selves into a population explosion?

* Have Indians not heard of condoms, birth-control pills, IUDs, vasectomy, tubectomy and abortion?

Wateva be the reason, Indians are expelling little Indians out of their wombs at a furious pace.

In the time it takes cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar to hit a century, 3,472 Indians are born. Disgusting.

Population Juggernaut Must Stop
This breeding madness must stop.

Right now.

Sanjay Gandhi, where are you when we need you most?

India just does not have the resources to support this kind of population explosion.

Not enough water, not enough space, not enough electricity, not enough jobs, not enough food, not enough trains and buses, not enough houses, not enough toilets, not enough schools, not enough playgrounds.

Truth be said there’s just not enough of anything in that benighted land except a plentiful supply of sullen souls. Continue reading »

The 2011 Indian census puts India’s literacy rate at 74.04% and the population at 1.21 billion.

That works out to about 314.6 million illiterates in India.

The U.S. population as per the 2010 census is 308.75 million.

And to think we outsource our IT services to these illiterate baboons. :(

No wonder software is increasingly buggy these days. ;)

I would like to congratulate the Indian team and Misbah for defeating Pakistan comprehensively.
- Source: “Abbas’ from Lahore on PakGuns.com

Folks, much as we all may be tempted to slam Pakistan, we’ve to admit that they played a great Match today.

Very Entertaining. Just that the better team (India) won today.

As for Misbah, we think this buffoon, who did not realize the gravity of the situation until it was too late, ought to be kicked out of the Pak team.

Bollywood may not win honors at any of the major international award festivals, be they Cannes, Oscars or even any of the lesser known festivals.

But make no mistake, Bollywood is well represented when it comes to picking up prizes for stealing scripts, bad acting, the casting couch, adultery, nepotism, drunk driving leading to murder of footpath dwellers, shooting endangered deer, drug addiction, balding pates, terrorist connections and the like.

However, until today Bollywood had one serious shortcoming – India’s Hindi film industry never had a convicted rapist of their own. All their rapists were only in the filums.

Voila, today Bollywood can proudly take pride in its first convicted Rapist. Continue reading »

Allah-o-Akbar – India Beats Pakistan

Just a few minutes to go before the crucial India vs Pakistan Terroristan semi-final match starts at Mohali.

The winner of today’s match will meet Sri Lanka in the finals on April 2 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

We see Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, their poodle Manmohan Singh and Bollywood actorAamir Khan in the stadium.

Ha ha ha.

The folks in Pakistan are getting desperate.

They are praying en masse in the mosques and Madrasas and offering blandishments to the country’s cricket players in the crucial semi-final World Cup cricket match against India in Mohali today.

Maybe, the Pakis are scared their chutias will take money and throw away their wickets.

The chief minister of Pakistan’s largest province Punjab, Shahbaz Sharif, is holding up the carrot of 25 acres of fertile land for each player if the team beats India today.

Folks, we hope India plays their best game today and that all the reward the Pakistani players get is a 6×4 plot in Kabristan (graveyard).

Here’s the Terroristan team seeking Allah’s blessings at Mohali:

Amazon has rolled out a cloud-based music streaming service ahead of Apple and Google that are also said to be planning similar services.

You can access the songs stored in the Amazon cloud from any PC or Mac via the browser or from an Android-based mobile device.

The service provides 5GB of free space in the cloud, enough for about 1,000 songs.

To get more storage, you’ve got to shell out bucks. For instance, $20 a year gets you 20GB (enough for 4,000 songs), $50 a year for 50GB (10,000 songs) and so on. Purchases of MP3 tracks at Amazon and saved to its Cloud Drive are stored for free and do not count against the storage quota.

Of course, we can’t imagine any of you Indian thieving bastards ever shelling out money to store your stolen music.  That’ll be the day hell freezes over. :P

How Amazon Cloud Streaming Works
First, you have to create an account at Amazon. Since we already had an account we just logged in and got down to business.

When we popped our Ennio Morricone CDs into our CD drive and uploaded the songs it didn’t take long for the transfer from the PC to the cloud drive. Just took about 40 seconds to move 50 songs.

Complications started soon after that.

You see, the tracks in the cloud drive wouldn’t play in our browser despite our trying both Firefox and Internet Explorer. Apparently, the formats of the songs in the CD are not compatible with the Amazon cloud music service. Only MP3 and .m4a (AAC files including Apple iTunes Store purchased songs) formats are currently supported by Amazon.

So in order to find compatible music on our PC, we had to first download the Amazon MP3 Uploader and install it.

After installation, double-click the Amazon MP3 Uploader to find and upload compatible music on your PC. The Upoader looks wide and far into your PC for compatible formats. It ultimately pulled up all the songs from our iTunes folders along with their playlists. You can pick and choose what you want to upload or upload all of them (remember, you pay if it exceeds 5GB).

The 106 songs and five Playlists we uploaded took up 14% of the 5GB free storage.

By the way, the music files are said to be uploaded in their original bit rate.

Once you upload the songs to your Amazon Cloud Drive you can play them on the Cloud Player via the browser. We played a bunch of songs via Firefox 4 browser and the streaming was fine.

You can also create Playlists on the Cloud. In our test, the existing iTunes Playlists transferred over smoothly.

So, now we don’t have to rely on our iPhone or desktops that have iTunes installed. We can now play music from our Asus netbook which doesn’t have the iTunes software on it. All we need is a WiFi connection.

What about Android?
Cloud Player for Android is now bundled into the new version of the Amazon MP3 App. It features the full Amazon MP3 Store and the mobile version of Cloud Player. Customers can use the app to play music stored on their Cloud Drive and music stored locally on their device. Features include the ability to search and browse by artist, album or song, create playlists and download music from Cloud Drive.

A Big Deal?
No, particularly for those of us who rely on iTunes for our music.

With the iPhone and the ability to store iTunes-purchased songs on up to three PCs/Laptops/Macs, very few would really need another backup in the form of a cloud.

Now if you schmucks’ll excuse our glass of gin beckons.

They say there are few certainties in life.

We say that among the few certainties, Sri Lanka’s victory over New Zealand in the semi-final of the ICC 2011 World Cup match that’ll soon get underway at the Premadasa Stadium in Colombo is a sure thing. An assured thing.

If Sri Lanka’s performance against England the other day in the quarter-final is anything to go by, the New Zealanders have no hope in hell.

NZ won the toss and elected to bat first.

While there is no change in the Sri Lankan team from their last match with England, NZ brought in left arm paceman Andy Mckay.

Final Scores

New Zealand – 217 All Out

Sri Lanka - 220-5

Kumar Sangakkara won the Man of the Match award for his fine knock of 54, good wicketkeeping and superb captaincy that has now taken the team into the finals.
