Blackberry PlayBook - A Market DisasterResearch in Motion, maker of the Blackberry phones and the PlayBook tablet, disclosed its PlayBook shipments today for its fiscal second quarter (ended August 27, 2011).

And they are HIDEOUSLY  UGLY.

RIM said it’d shipped 200,000 Blackberry Playbook tablets into the channel.

Yes, a piffling 200,000 PlayBooks were shipped into the channel in the entire second quarter.

Mind you, shipments are not the same as sales. Shipments are just sending the tablets to stores like BestBuy, Staples or Office Depot.

Actual sales must be so horrible that RIM did not disclose it. We’d be surprised if RIM has sold more than 10,000 units to customers.

RIM executives acknowledged on the conference call today that the majority of the increase in inventory in the quarter (to $945 million from $325 million in the previous quarter) was related to the global rollout of the BlackBerry PlayBook that started early in Q2.

PlayBook, like most other tablets, has found it hard to stand against the Apple iPad juggernaut. Continue reading »

It’s been a distressing summer this year in the U.S.

The heat is unrelenting and no matter how much beer we quaff we feel lousy.

So in a irritated mood we headed to Killadelphia, known in more peaceful times as Philadelphia, the City of Brotherly Love, for a change.

Tired of the unending run of mostly crappy Indian restaurants, we headed to Manakeesh Cafe & Bakery, a Lebanese restaurant on Walnut St (at 45th St) in Philadelphia.

Manakeesh has received favorable reviews and has a good selection of both vegetarian and non-vegetarian items on the menu. Parking is a bit of a headache in the area and we had to park two blocks away.

The inside of Manakeesh is slightly dark. You head to the counter, place your order and get a plastic number token that you place on your table. When the food’s ready, the waiter brings it to your table.

Being famished as usual, we ordered a whole bunch of stuff – three sweets (one Baklavah, a date Ma^moul and a Pitachio Ma^moul), Kafta (ground lamb and beef with Parsley), Falafel, Vegetarian Combo (half Za^tar and half cheese) and a Spinach pie.

There’s seating outside too on the side and we opted to dine alfresco gazing at people walking by on the Walnut St sidewalk.

The pastries came quickly since they are prepared and housed in a glass case near the cash counter.

Manakessh Cafe Baklavah, Date & Pistachio Ma^moulDate Mamoul (L), Pistachio Mamoul (C) & Baklavah (R)

The Baklavah ($1.50) was a gorgeous, honey and some nut filled layered delight that had us swooning. We’ve had grocery store Baklavah on several occasions but the Manakeesh version is nonpareil.

But $1.50 for a small Baklavah piece, delightful as it was, seemed like daylight robbery for this cheapo desi.

Pistachio and Date Mamouls ($1.75 each) were crumbly and not as sweet as the Baklavah. But a delight nevertheless.

Manakeesh Cafe Kafta Kafta (Ground Lamb & Beef with Parsley) – Deeelicious

As we were polishing off our Bakklavah and Ma^mouls, the Kafta and Vegetarian Combo showed up.

Setting aside the small crumbs of the Ma^moul left over, we immediately fell over the Kafta flatbread that came with a few pieces of pickled cucumber on top.

Yummm, delicious. Drooling on our keyboard at the sheer thought of it.

Each time, we lifted the Kafta bread to our mouth the pleasing, heavenly aroma of the meat hit our nostrils heightening the anticipation of the bite. Kinda like going down on…well, you know the rest. ;)

Manakeesh Cafe FatayerFatayer (Lebanese Spinach Pie) – Avoid It

Fatayer (Labanese Spinach Pie) was most definitely not worth it.

The Samosa-like pie ($1 a piece) was small and had a small filling of Spinach inside.

Damn, we just couldn’t find any flavor in the whole thing.

Manakeesh Cafe Vege ComboVegetarian Combo at Manakeesh

Forgetting the disappointing Spinach Pie, we eagerly turned to the Vegetarian Combo that came hot to the table.

Alas, it was not what we ordered. There were no vegetables on top and the whole bread was covered with cheese, instead of half Thyme and half Za^tar.

Also, the bread was badly burned on the edges of one side.

Despite the acts of sabotage, our Vegetable combo still tasted good after we went in and got our order ‘fixed.’

Unlike Indian bread (Naan etc) that becomes unpalatable after a few minutes on the table, the bread at Manakeesh remained tasty till the last bite several minutes later.

Manakeesh Cafe Falafel WrapFalafel Wrap ($4.50)

At $4.50, the Falafel was a good deal, particularly if you’re heading there for a quick, non-heavy lunch.

We ended up with the wrap version. The guys at the counter never offered us a choice (wrap or plate) but we should have also been more alert to the options on the menu.

The Falafel wrap had four Falafel balls, four tomato slices, a single slice of pickled cucumber and four slices of a pickled vegetable that we couldn’t identify.

Overall, it tasted good but we like the Falafel at Maoz on Walnut St (bet 12th & 13th St) better.

Careless Service

Like with a lot of ethnic restaurants, good service is not a word you’ll find in Manakeesh’s dictionary.

They messed up one of our orders and although the counter-guy apologized in a perfunctory sort of way we weren’t pleased since there was no excuse for the error (there was hardly a crowd during our visit).

Even when he ‘fixed’ our messed up order, the clowns did a poor job, not caring to daub the Thyme layer on top.

Also, does it cost anything to smile at customers and say, Hi, how are you?

Don’t expect that at Manakeesh.

The waiters move about with grim visages as if they’d just returned from a dear one’s funeral.

And what’s wrong with giving customers a receipt.

By the way, the rest room at Manakeesh was very clean (restrooms in Indian restaurants are usually a messy affair).

Its service snafus and the few problems with our food aside, we might still drop in at Manakeesh again.

Things are getting worse for U.S. workers.

The bozos at the U.S. Postal Service are preparing to fire 35,000 employees.

Arguing that its massive nationwide infrastructure is no longer financially sustainable, the USPS is considering shuttering 250 processing facilities, reducing mail processing equipment by 50%, dramatically decreasing the nationwide transportation network, throwing 35,000 employees under the bus and lowering service standards for First-Class Mail.

The post thinks it can save $3 billion a year by implementing the above slash-and-burn techniques.

With the advent of e-mail and other electronic forms of communication, mail volume has declined by 43 billion pieces in the past five years and continues to decline. First-Class Mail has dropped 25% and single piece First-Class Mail (letters bearing postage stamps) has declined 36% in the same period and nearly 50% in the past ten years. Apparently, the decline has created substantial excess capacity within the postal processing network.

Ha Ha Ha

Never let it be said that the USPS bozos are without a sense of humor.

After announcing plans to kick out 35,000 employees, USPS Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe said:

Our employees continue to do a terrific job for our customers and are among the most dedicated workforce anywhere.

By the way, the USPS receives no tax dollars for operating expenses and relies on sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations.

These are good times for tablet vendors.

Ahem, only if your company’s name is Apple. ;)

Worldwide media tablet shipments shot up a whopping 88.9% on a sequential basis and 303.8% year over year in the second quarter of 2011 to 13.6 million units, according to market researcher IDC.

Consumers eager embrace of its iPad 2 tablets in the second quarter boosted Apple’s market share to 68.3% from 65.7% in the previous quarter.

Apple shipped 9.3 million iPad 2 tablets in the second quarter.

How are Other Tablet Vendors Doing?

Well, if we were the top executives at RIM (Blackberry), Samsung, Motorola, Asus or any of the other tablet vendors we’d write our will, confess our failures, bid goodbye to the family, take the elevator to the roof and splash our brains into a red gooey patch on the sidewalk. :( Continue reading »

Who says unbridled, unregulated capitalism does not produce prosperity?

Of course, unregulated capitalism produces prosperity.

For a tiny sliver of the population – The Bankers, Lobbyists, Corporate Titans and the Politicians.

As for the rest, let them eat grass.

That’s what more and more Americans will be increasingly reduced to.

We’ve already read reports of Americans foraging for mushrooms and other food substances outside.

A record 46.2 million Americans were living in poverty in 2010, the highest level in the 52 years for which poverty estimates have been published, the U.S. Census Bureau said today.

America’s official poverty rate in 2010 was 15.1%, up from 14.3% in 2009 ─ the third consecutive annual increase in the poverty rate.

So, is it any surprise then that food banks across America are straining to meet requests from unemployed Americans and their familes.

Feeding America’s network of food banks distributed 3.1 billion pounds of food in 2010, an increase of 500 million pounds over 2009.

Hey, that’s not all.

Nearly 50 million Americans, a sixth of the population, struggle without health insurance.

Other highlights of the Census Bureau report:

* At 27.4%, the poverty rate for Blacks was more than double that of Whites (13%)

* Hispanic poverty rate of 26.6% was also more double that of Whites

* Poverty rate for children under 18 increased to 22% (16,401,000 children) in 2010

* By region, the South had the highest poverty rate (16.9%) and highest number of poor (19.07 million)

The two tables below tell a poignant tale of America’s inexorable, irreversible decline:

If we’ve said it once, we’ve said it a million times.

Indians love trash.

Oh yeah, they just love to watch trash. Particularly, the trashy Bollywood films.

Trashier the better for Indians living in America.

Here’s how the new Bollywood film Mere Brother Ki Dulhan fared at the U.S. box office for the opening September 9-11, 2011 weekend compared to a few prominent Bollywood films:
