Obama Launches New Program for Blacks

According to an article in the British newspaper Guardian today, 72% of Black babies in the U.S. are born out of wedlock

In other words, nearly three-fourths of Black babies in America are bastards.

Blacks in America are said to be witnessing a serious collapse of the family system.

Now it wouldn’t matter whether a baby is a bastard or not were it not for researchers and writers linking bastards to crimes once the baby grows up.

The writer in the Guardian piece too posits a correlation between birth as bastards and high crime rates:

Worse still, there is a direct correlation between kids born out of wedlock and higher rates of crime. According to a 2010 study in the Journal of Law and Economics, kids grow into adults who turn to crime precisely because of a lack of educational opportunities and parenting. And that is exactly the pathology being born out in the black race.

Over 50% of homicide victims are black, according to a 2014 study conducted by the Violence Policy Center, which characterizes the rate as epidemic. According to Justice Department data from 1980-2008, “blacks were six times more likely than whites to be homicide victims and seven times more likely than whites to commit homicides”. More than half of all federal prisoners are black.

More blacks go through “stop and frisk” in New York City because more blacks are committing more crimes in the city – last year, blacks made up 74% of shooting victims, 74% of shooting suspects and 70% of shooting arrestees.

Indian Bastards – Different Story

But the American or Guardian argument of a connection between illegitimate birth (i.e. bastards) and crimes does not seem to hold good in India.

Even in this permissive day and age, out of wedlock births are rare in India.

Still, crime rates are extremely high in India and the crimes often brutal.

There are plenty of bastards in India but they’re not of out of wedlock bastards.

In other words, Indian criminals are bastards in the figurative sense (bad, offensive people) but not bastards in the literal sense (born out of wedlock).

I doubt if any of Nirbhaya’s rapists/killers were bastards.

My hypothesis is that more than illegitimate birth, it’s the curse of family poverty and arrogance of enormous wealth/power that are at the root of crime.

Other factors like lack of access to education, unemployment and racial or ethnic discrimination that often accompany and exacerbate poverty breed crime far more than out of wedlock births.

Undoubtedly, Nirbhaya’s rapists Ram Singh, Mukesh Singh, Vinay Sharma, Pawan Gupta, Akshay Thakur and the 17-year-old juvenile can easily be condemned as bastards for their horrific attack on the unfortunate Delhi girl in December 2012. I’d be extremely surprised if all of them did not belong to the bottom economic class and had limited education.

Salman Khan, Sanjay Dutt, Dawood Ibrahim and Narendra Modi were not born out of wedlock but yet they too may be considered bastards in the dictionary sense of offensive or disagreeable persons (Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary, 11th Edition, p.102) for their high crimes (horrible crimes in the case of Salman, Sanjay and Dawood and a moral crime in the case of Narendra Modi for not doing enough to prevent butchery of Muslims in 2002).

Bastards – Bottom Line

The Indian picture of crime suggests extreme poverty and enormous wealth/power are more correlated to crime than out of wedlock birth.

So more resources should be targeted at reducing poverty and income inequalities and the law should be applied equally to all people irrespective of their wealth or power if we’re serious about cutting crime rates.

Don’t be surprised if besides reducing crime the anti-poverty measures and providing better access to education and employment also reduce the number of bastards, whether of born out of wedlock category or the offensive type.

Out of wedlock births (bastards) can at best be an intervening variable not the root cause of high crime.
