A short while ago, Bernard Madoff received a sentence of 150 years in prison for the decades-long Ponzi scheme that bilked investors out of billions of dollars.

The sentence means Madoff, who lived the good life with private jets, yachts and Palm Beach mansions, will never smell the roses again.

Sweet.

By the way, what the f*** is happening with the court cases involving Indian businessman Ramalinga Raju, who confessed to cooking the books and caused the collapse of software exporter Satyam Computer Services (recently acquired by Tech Mahindra).

Are the Indian politicians protecting the scumbag Raju?

The Maharaja is in dire straits and begging for a bailout.

Folks, Air India has run out of cash and cannot pay its employees, according to news reports coming out of India.

Instead of getting their June salaries on July 1, the employees will have to wait till July 15 to collect their pay check.

And what do they call Air India – India’s flying ambassador?

To us, India’s Begging Ambassador sounds like a better description for the ailing airline.

Have any of you flown on this airline?

We’ve never had the privilege although our family members have and are none too pleased about their experience.

The European Commission has slapped a massive $1.45 billion fine on chip giant Intel for engaging in anti-competitive practices that harm consumers.

Competition Commissioner Neelie Kroes said Wednesday:

Intel has harmed millions of European consumers by deliberately acting to keep competitors out of the market for computer chips for many years. Such a serious and sustained violation of the EU’s antitrust rules cannot be tolerated.

Serial Rapist
In plain language, Intel can be considered a serial rapist for repeatedly harming consumers by its illegal, anti-competitive actions that ultimately lead to higher PC prices.

In 2008, the Korea Fair Trade Commission imposed a $25.4 million fine for abusive practices that led to higher PC prices for South Korean customers.

Three years earlier, the Japan Fair Trade Commission said Intel violated the country’s anti-competitive laws through illegal deals with five Japanese PC manufacturers.

In the U.S., the Federal Trade Commission and New York Attorney General’s Office are investigating Intel for alleged abuse of its monopoly position.

Violates EC Rules
Imposing the mega-fine, the EC said Intel violated EC Treaty antitrust Continue reading »

As promised in his campaign, U.S. President Obama has initiated steps to make it tough for U.S. companies that create jobs in Bangalore while screwing American employees in Buffalo (a dying city in upstate New York).

Yesterday, Obama set the ball rolling for reforming the U.S. tax code that currently rewards companies for shipping jobs offshore or transferring profits to overseas tax havens.

[M]ost Americans meet their responsibilities because they understand that it’s an obligation of citizenship, necessary to pay the costs of our common defense and our mutual well-being.

And yet, even as most American citizens and businesses meet these responsibilities, there are others who are shirking theirs. And many are aided and abetted by a broken tax system, written by well-connected lobbyists on behalf of well-heeled interests and individuals. It’s a tax code full of corporate loopholes that makes it perfectly legal for companies to avoid paying their fair share….it’s a tax code that says you should pay lower taxes if you create a job in Bangalore, India, than if you create one in Buffalo, New York. Yes, good times are on the horizon.

Media reports increasingly suggest that the days of Desi Butcher a.k.a. Vikram Pandit, the CEO of Citigroup, are numbered.

Here are some of the headlines for the greedy Desi Butcher, who massacred tens of thousands of jobs at Citigroup while drawing an obscenely hefty pay package:

* Days could be numbered for Bank of America, Citi CEOs – Economic Times

First it was the H1B software coolies that began screwing American workers (thanks to greedy U.S. corporations).

Now, the down-on-their-luck American workers are being bitch slapped by other things Indian.

The New York Times has an interesting article today on how Indian steel pipes are being used in an oil pipeline project in Granite City, Illinois even as a local steel plant remains closed for the last four months and 2,000 workers are out of work.

Here’s an excerpt from the NYT story:

Jeff Rains, a retired steel worker at the sprawling mill here, made the discovery. Out walking a month ago, he waited impatiently at a rail crossing while a freight train slowly passed, its flatbed cars stacked with steel pipes, each wide enough for a child to crawl through. Then he noticed “Made in India” stenciled on the pipes.

That observation has made him a Paul Revere Continue reading »

One country’s misery fuels another country’s prosperity.

As the U.S. reels under a cataclysmic recession, Indian tech firms like Infosys Technologies that provide software and BPO services for large American corporations are riding the wave of success.

India’s software giant Infosys turned in yet another quarter of impressive results and added nearly 5,000 jobs (gross) even as Silicon Valley continues to be battered by massive job losses.

Profits were up 2.6% year-over-year to $321 million for the quarter ended March 31, 2009 while revenues fell 1.8% in the same period to $1.12 billion.

For the full Fiscal Year 2009, Infosys reported a net profit of $1.28 billion (up 10.1%) on revenues of $4.66 billion (up 11.7%).

Infosys CEO S.Gopalakrishnan couldn’t contain his glee:

Many of our clients are impacted by the financial crisis and are looking to us to help them reduce their expenses and optimize their businesses. Our services, solutions and business model are well suited to help them in this environment. We are focusing on enhancing our business and investing smartly for the future.

Revenue Distribution
In line with prior quarters, North America brought in the bulk of Infosys’ revenues.

North America accounted for 64.6% of revenues in the quarter and Europe for 24.3%. Domestic revenues were a piffling 1.6%. Continue reading »
