Chand Palace, Parsippany, New Jersey

For aficionados of fine Indian vegetarian food in New Jersey, Chand Palace is a dream come true.

Located on Littleton Road in Parsippany, Chand Palace serves an extensive array of delicious North Indian, South Indian and some Indian-Chinese food.

Chand Palace has many things going in its favor. It has a competent kitchen that knows its curries, a nice spacious dining area and pleasing ambience. By Golly, it even has polite and attentive wait staff, a rarity at most Indian restaurants in the U.S.

We were so famished when we walked into Chand Palace for lunch the other day that we let our tastebuds roam hither and thither on the vast terrain of the restaurant's offerings - Dahi Papri Chaat and Kathi Rolls for appetizers, Rice Pulav, Lemon Rice, Vegetable Noodles, Panner Tilda, Vegetable Kolhapuri, Gobi Manchurian, Assorted Naan Bread, Masala Dosa, Sambar, Coconut Chutney, Green Chutney and Mixed Vegetable Pickles for the main course and Phirni, Gulab Jamun, Son Papidi for the deserts, we tasted 'em all.

Oh, we tried Chand Palace's Mysore Coffee, Pistchio Kulfi and Falooda Shake too.

For the most part, we hit the jackpot and were happy with Chand Palace's food. Chand Palace is that rare Indian restaurant in New Jersey with far more hits than misses.

With a nice flavor, Paneer Tilda was heavenly and tasted great with both rice as well as the Naan bread.

Vegetable Noodles was hot, spicy and above all tasty. Chand Palace's Vegetable Noodles were tastier than at some Indian-Chinese restaurants in the New Jersey/New York area. While Gobi Manchurian was crisp and tasty, it was a wee bit low on spices.

Dahi Papri Chaat and Kathi Rolls were both yummy and left no cause for complaint. But Vegetable Kolhapuri tasted so-so and bordered on the bland side.

If, like us, you enjoy Lemon Rice then consider yourself to be in the right place. Chand Palace's Lemon Rice and Rice Pulav are treats for the palate.

As fine a creation as the Lemon Rice was, we were even more taken with Chand Palace's Breads - Garlic Naan, Plain Naan and Onion Kulcha. All of them were flavorful and hot.

Coconut Chutney was spicy and tasty though it was insultingly cold. While Green Chutney was slighlty lacking in salt, Mixed Vegetable Pickle was below par.

That Chand Palace's kitchen is not a master of North Indian food alone was amply proven by the restaurant's excellent Masala Dosa and Sambar.

To our great delight, the Masala Dosa was crisp, medium sized and tasted fine. Sambar was neither too thick nor too watery and had just the right amount of Spices and Toor Dal.

Have Chand Palace's Sambar with rice or the Masala Dosa and either way you are the winner.

Our experience with Chand Palace's Desserts was mixed. We hit paydirt with Son Papdi but Phirni was a little low on sugar and Gulab Jamun a bit high on sweetness.

Don't miss the Falooda Shake and Pistachio Kulfi. They are just divine.

Mysore Coffee at Chand Palace came steaming to the table and proved to be very refreshing.

Our waiter Indu Sudan (hailing from Kanya Kumari in South Indian state of Tamil Nadu) was unfailingly courteous, checked with us before removing the plates and filled in the water glasses promptly.

Among the dozens of Indian restaurants we've been to in the New Jersey and New York area, Chand Palace is that rare gem. We can't wait to get back there. - © Rekha Inc.
