More like a take-out joint than a restaurant, Punjab Dhaba is a no-frills Indian eating place.
You order your food at the counter, pay upfront and pick it up when it's ready.
Located on Arlington Blvd in Falls Church, Virginia (in the same complex as the Loehman's Twin Cinemas screening Bollywood movies), Punjab Dhaba offers an array of Indian vegetarian and non-vegetarian items.
For the most part, this Virginia Indian restaurant serves decent Indian food with more hits than misses.
Among the many items we tried at Punjab Dhaba, Rajma Masala was our favorite from our meal at this Falls Church Indian restaurant. Cooked to perfection with just the right spiciness for Indian palates, the Rajma Masala tasted good with both Naan Bread or with plain White Rice.
We enjoyed Paneer Masala and Mushroom Korma as well. Both were spicy enough for Indian palates and tasted fresh.
For once, we stuck to the regular Naan Bread instead of ordering Garlic Naan as we usually do. Hot off the Tandoor oven, Punjab Dhaba's regular Naans were good.
Just as were enjoying our meal, Katrina struck us without warning in the form of Dahi Vada. Punjab Dhaba's Dahi Vada was pathetic - the Vada was inexplicably hard and the Dahi (yogurt) in which the Vada rested was tasteless.
Chicken Tikka was another hit with us unlike the bland impostor that we often encounter at other Indian restaurants. But the Lamb Vindaloo was disappointing because it was not spicy enough. As for the Chicken Meatballs, fuggedaboutit.
Punjab Dhaba's menu also lists a few South Indian items like Dosa and Uttapam. But we gave them the pass.
The Rice Pudding barely made passing grade. It was lacking in sugar and the rice had formed into clumps.
Masala Chai was plain awful with far too much milk and none of those spices that give Masala Tea its magical flavor. A disgrace for any Indian restaurant, Punjab Dhaba's only saving grace was that on a cold evening, it was piping hot.
During our visit to Punjab Dhaba the other day, the crowd of about a dozen people was comprised entirely of Indian although we saw a couple of Americans picking up their take-out orders.
Since Punjab Dhaba is essentially a self-service joint, there's not much to talk about on the service side here. But the tall fellow at the cash counter who took our order was rather brusque when we asked him about the two different varieties of Tea (Chai and Spiced Tea) listed on the board. They are the same, he barked at us. So, why are these bozos listing them separately then?
