Kuselan – Judas Rajinikanth Spits on Tamil Movie Fans

Judas Rajini, What About Us?

For the sake of a few silver coins, our modern-day avatar of JudasRajinikanth – having decided to sell his soul, gathered up all his spittle and in one swift motion spat on the faces of millions of his Tamil fans worldwide.

For a highly-paid star like Rajinikanth to associate with and actively collaborate in the making and delivery of a piece of trash like Kuselan is a Judas-like betrayal – a dirty and shameless repudiation of the decades-long affection and loyalty of his legions of fans.

Directed by a lobotomized bozo called P.Vasu based on a story by Srinivasan, Kuselan is a piece of junk not worthy of even YouTube.

This buffoon Vasu also claims credit for the cretinous screenplay and sophomoric dialogs, both of which set a new nadir in Tamil movies.

Unless you’ve just come in from Mars, you know by now that Kuselan is a remake of the 2007 Malayalam film Kadha Parayumbol.

The half-baked story centers on the visit of a movie superstar Ashok Kumar (Rajinikanth) to a village where unbeknownst to him his old friend Balu (Pasupathy) has a run-down barber shop and is having a hard time making ends meet.

When villagers get to know about the barber’s old friendship with the superstar, everyone in the village suddenly discover ‘affection’ for Balu and his family. You see, everyone has the same axe to grind – they all want to meet the superstar for their vested interests.

But Kuselan is not a ode to friendship although some have wrongly tried to characterize it as such. Au contraire, it’s an odiously bad crap-show, the likes of which we are mercifully seldom subjected to even in the augean gullies and bylanes of Kollywood.

Friendship, the supposed leitmotif of the movie, never comes to life in Kuselan because the movie, very early on, goes off track into infantile comedy and nauseating refrains about the superstar.

Through his involvement with a movie like Kuselan, Rajinikanth sends only one message to his Tamil fans – I don’t give a Flying F*&k for you all because no matter what manure I shovel at you, you schmucks will lap it up.

Kuselan is the kind of garbage you’d expect brats like Simbhu, Ajith or Vijay to feature in, not a superstar like Rajinikanth or a talented artiste like Pasupathy.

No ifs and buts, Kuselan is plain and simple a pathetic piece of shit – an ugly ensemble of poor story, horrible acting, mediocre music and sophomoric comedy would be a charitable description of this ghastly production.

In Kuselan, Pasupathy lives up to the first half of his name (Pasu – meaning cow). This Pasu goes about his role as the village barber Balu in the most expressionless manner possible. Surely, this is not the same Pasupathy who made mincemeat of Kamal “Dasavatharam Freak-Show” Haasan in Virumandi or delighted us as the morose son returning to an unwelcome home in Veyil.

From the scene in the loan office in Kuselan when we first see Pasu to the scene in the school when Rajinikanth talks about his friendship with him to the final scene when he walks arm-in-arm with Rajinikanth, this Pasu has thrown in a cud-chewing, lazy performance unworthy of his talents.

Ditto with Rajinikanth. Is this an actor with 33-years experience or a mere three-months behind him. Seems more like the latter because of the lethargic way Rajinikanth goes about his role.

The scenes of the movie within a movie featuring Rajinikanth and Nayantara are insufferably amateurish and are worse than the Vannarapettai School annual day drama.

Of course, Rajinikanth was never known for his histrionics (save perhaps in Aaralinthu Aravathu Varai). Rajini’s fame owes more to his hard work and sheer luck (or as they say in Tamil – Avanakku Ange Machai Iraku Da, a reference to the mythical mole on the schlong of fortunate individuals).

But in Kuselan what Rajinikanth delivers is not acting but an ugly parody of acting. His charisma aside, sometimes we wonder if Rajinikanth can even pass a Hollywood screen test.

Rajinikanth enters the movie 41.58 minutes after the movie begins, far too early in our opinion.

And what the hell is Vadivelu doing in Kuselan? By golly, are Tamil movie fans complete idiots that they must frequently be roused from their slumber by the asinine antics of a Vadivelu or a Vivek in movie after movie. In Kuselan, Vadivelu’s irritating antics – and his completely irrelevant role – as the rival barber Shamugham are not endearingly funny but nauseatingly Punny (pig in Tamil). They also distract from the main theme of the movie.

Besides Vadivelu’s so-called comedy scenes, there are two other parallel awful ‘comedy’ tracks in Kuselan involving Santhanam and M.S.Baskar. Talk of tripling our misery. What a waste of screen time.

Unlike that slick show (but disappointing storyline) Sivaji from director Shankar, Kuselan has no worthy punch dialogs either although there’s some repetition of lines from some of Rajinikanth’s earlier movies.

Nayantara seems to have been brought in just to titillate the audience, which she does in her usual ugly way wearing a red checked mini-skirt and a tight maroon blouse over a large bosom in that rain song-dance.

With her mini-skirt billowing up, her right hand slapping her buttock and her bottom shaking obscenely, Nayantara displays as much grace as a she-dog in heat during the Chaaral song-dance.

If Nayantara’s mini-skirt had gone up any higher, the audience would have been exposed to the horror of her mons veneris. Ach mein Gott!

Surely, the young children who were part of the Chaaral song-dance would be traumatized for life at being subjected to such a lascvious assault on their tender eye-balls. What were the dolts at the Censor Board doing when the semi-nude Nayantara was cavorting with the young children. Do you think they were bribed?

The song Chaaral, by the way, was perhaps the only decent song in Kuselan. The rest are hideous, merciless assaults on the eardrums.

Meena is cast in the role of Devi, the poor barber’s wife but looks more like a rich landlord’s wife. Sadly, acting is as alien to Meena as grace is to Nayantara. Again, a precious waste of screen time.

If you are determined to go through the masochistic ordeal that watching Kuselan amounts to, do keep some Kleenex handy. You’ll need plenty of those tissues to wipe the messy spittle that Rajinikanth deposits on your face.

We Survived this Kuppa (trash) a.k.a Kuselan. Can you?

P.S: By making the sisters of a convent school seem so disgustingly obsessed with getting the superstar to visit their school, Kuselan casts these Christian nuns in a most unfavorable light. We have a hard time believing this subliminal assault on Christianity in Kuselan was accidental.

P.S 2: There were about 25-30 people in the hall for the 3:00PM screening (on Friday, August 1, 2008) of Kuselan at Multiplex Cinemas (Towne Center), East Windsor (New Jersey). Definitely not a great response.

Rajini is treating tamil fans as stupids for a long time . and proved it once again with this shit.. luckily I read your review.. had plans to go 4 this movie atleast for pasupathy… u saved our lives..

On the nuns front – I donno how these MFs r getting away from censor board.. do they have a censor board of their own

  3. gandhiji   August 2, 2008 at 4:12 pm

Haven’t seen the movie.. but trust your review.

Looks like “Pee” (meaning solid waste matter in tamil and liquid waste matter in english) Vasu butchered the movie.. And to see that legendary K.Balanchandar oversaw this shameless movie with indecent exposures of Rajinikanth (to the Rajini fans) and Nayanthara (to the front benchers).. the lure of money is what is killing indian cinema. I am sure that Kamal wouldn’t have been satisfied with Dasavatharam either.. same as Rajini, KB and Pasupathy.

I was hoping that Rajini would retire on a high note with Sivaji.. but Sivaji’s mad success probably blinded him.. or he was probably trying to help out KB in this money making exercise.

We doubt that Kuselan will fly with the audience. Sivaji was at least slick.

I thought Rajinikanth was popular than kamalhassan .. When you wrote a review about Kamal’s trash , so many were there to defend the movie.. Here there are no comments to defend Kuselan.. Does this mean Kuselan is so bad that even Rajini’s fanatics cant bear it? I wanted to watch Kuselan( I never watched any movies of Rajinikanth in my life )but going by your reviews ,I don’t think Iam going to waste my money..

Is there any of Rajini’s movies worth watching?

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

    1. You write above: Here there are no comments to defend Kuselan.. Does this mean Kuselan is so bad that even Rajini’s fanatics cant bear it?

It’s hard to defend the indefensible.

    2. You write: Is there any of Rajini’s movies worth watching?

For the most part, most Rajini movies are trash although a few of them have some interesting songs and nice “punch” dialogs.

The one Rajinikanth movie that we liked was Aralithu Aravadu Varai released in 1979. But please keep in mind that as with most things in life, timing is everything. A movie that we enjoy today may not appeal to us a few years hence (exceptions to this rule are classics like Casablanca, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Sholay, On the Water Front, Aradhana and Yadon Ki Baarat).

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

You write above: what do you say about M.N.shyamalans movies? is the hollywood racist against him?

We liked some of Night Shyamalan’s early movies like Sixth Sense & Unbreakable. But we did not like Lady in the Water. His new movie The Happening has not done too well at the box office.

We doubt that Hollywood is racist against Night Shyamalan. It’s just that his recent movies are not good enough. Plus, Shyamalan irritated the Hollywood establishment by some of his public comments.

We also enjoyed Taare Zameen Par.

  7. asamband   August 3, 2008 at 4:44 pm

May be Rajni’s fans are not pseudo-intellectuals who try to prove that they as well as their thailavar (leader) is the greatest in the world (like writing detailed ‘white papers’ for the crap movie Dasavatharam)

  8. asamband   August 3, 2008 at 5:17 pm

Mitchel, you should watch some Rajni movies to understand why Rajni has some great fan following across the world. They are mass entertainers for tamil audiences than any attempt to academy award. Try ‘Baasha’, ‘Sivaji’,’Annamalai’, and ‘Padayappa’.

  9. asamband   August 3, 2008 at 7:30 pm

I watched Kuselan and agree with reviewer’s comments. It was like Rajni coming to Sun or Kalaignar TV studios on one of their ‘india varalatril mudhal muraiyaga’ (first time in indian history) Rajni special programme on his birthday/Pongal/Deepavali day and made money out of unsuspecting fans. No acting by Rajni.

I don’t know why they have Ashok Kumar as the name…They could have ‘Rajnikanth’ as the Superstar. And Vadivelu comedy track was over. Atleast they should have showed two kids playing and illustrating whatever ‘friendship’ Rajni abruptly brought in the Climax.

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

    1. You write above: It was like Rajni coming to Sun or Kalaignar TV studios on one of their ‘india varalatril mudhal muraiyaga’ (first time in indian history) Rajni special programme on his birthday/Pongal/Deepavali day and made money out of unsuspecting fans. No acting by Rajni

Kuselan is nothing but a crass ripoff act to cash in on the name of Rajinikanth.

Our Kuselan ticket cost us $16.00 in New Jersey for the Friday matinee (what an irony that movies like Dark Knight, Hancock, Mama Mia and The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor for the matinee shows at the same theatre were just $7.25).

Rajinikanth and his ilk are nothing but greedy pigs that feed at the trough without any thought of delivering even the bare minimum quality.

    2. You write: And Vadivelu comedy track was over.

The Vadivelu comedy track in Kuselan was absolutely sickening.

    3. Kuselan is not a movie. It is a disgrace to Tamil cinema.

Kamal Haasan’s Dasavatharam is bad but Kuselan is infinitely worse.

I read the reviews from someother websites, its surprising to see not many critics..
    except one(http://www.greatandhra.com/ganews/viewnews.php?id=8982&cat=1&scat=12)
To be frank I do beleive in SearchIndia’s verdict..

(may be rajni has done some ‘business’ on the reviews as well ? )

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

You write above: I read the reviews from someother websites, its surprising to see not many critics..

A few other reviews are also not favorable.

Deccan Herald – “Vasu’s work looks like a haircut done with a pair of shears”

Sify – “The film tries desperately to glorify Rajinikanth’s larger than life superstardom …[but] loses its focus and moves away from the gist of the original, which was a simple story about human emotions, based on friendship between an ordinary barber and a superstar.

Behindwoods – “the delightful story about two friends is regrettably lost”

The Times of India sent a reviewer who does not understand Tamil and the movie did NOT have subtitles.

  11. gandhiji   August 4, 2008 at 8:03 am

yo mitchell, as asambad said, Rajini fans don’t watch the movie for the artistic values, we watch it for Rajini’s charm.. he must have a really big machcham over there. His acting skills are proven in some of the 80s movies like “A to A”, “Thillu Mullu”, “Jhonny”(no typo there.. I think it was named that way for numerology??), “Mullum Malarum”.. and some more in the 80s.. Unfortunately he has the ability to generate lots of revenue doing nothing.. so he has been rutting in delivering one superhero movie after another.. I am hoping that some genius moviemaker will arise and will be able to convince Rajini and Kamal to make a great movie.. Kamal needs to be convinced that he is not a great creator.. he is just a great impersonator..

Rajini is so well liked because he/the media has created an aura (which I believe) that he is a very humble person.. so I like to see Rajini and his movies succeed, even though I don’t like watching most of his movies.. he is an intriguing phenomenon..
And it is also kind of trendy to like Rajini..

as for you searchindia, not sure why you chose to call him “Judas”..(was to it generate more debate relating to his Kannadiga statement&apology?) he hasn’t deviated from whatever he was doing earlier.. i think he is doing it as a service to the producer and the technicians.. his movies are profitable even though most of them are crappy.. so he is philanthropic in his own way.. I also believe that Kamal sacrificed his artistic values to generate more revenue for Dasa.. The tamil movie-makers and movie-goers have made it into a vicious circle.. no redemption in sight..

Need to watch Subramaniapuram.. could there be some redemption there?

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

    1. You write above: he is an intriguing phenomenon

Very true. We’ve always held Rajinikanth in high esteem for being among the few to have made it despite Herculean odds. Rajini’s story is one of those rare instances in life where Luck, Determination and Hard Work worked in parallel to create a legend.

    2. You write: as for you searchindia, not sure why you chose to call him “Judas”..(was to it generate more debate relating to his Kannadiga statement&apology?)

As we wrote elsewhere, when people like Rajinikanth are involved in movies like Kuselan, it’s a complete betrayal because there are no redeeming elements. With great fame comes great responsibility and great expectations.

True, most of Rajini’s movies are nothing to write home about. But all of them had at least one redeeming element for us. In Sivaji, it was the slick execution; in Muthu, it was the jatka vandi (horse carriage) song; Baasha (punch dialogs like Na, oru thadava sonna..); in Aralinthu Aravadu Varai, it was the story and his performance (an exception to the Rajini rule) and so on.

Alas, we never found any takeaways from Kuselan. Nada. Zilch. Zero.

    3. You write: i think he is doing it as a service to the producer and the technicians

Rajini may or may not have done the producers and technicians a service but he has definitely done a disservice to the audience in Kuselan. At the Multiplex Cinemas (Towne Center Plaza) in East Windsor, New Jersey, people were constantly walking in and out during the movie. Usually this happens when the movie is not engrossing enough.

As for his ‘apology” to Kannadigas, that was nothing but a pathetic bid by Rajinikanth to get Kuselan screened in Bangalore.

  12. anniyann   August 4, 2008 at 8:40 am

Hi Mitchell… Let me tell you

Silence is far greater and much better than arguing.

Fools talks while wise people listen

If you could not taste the beauty of Kuselan; you mean you are on the track of this perishing world.

What do you think tamil cinema can offer to your $16 or 15; do you want them to create a heaven for you…

this search india is the best stupid site to review a movie…they never accepted truth; off course they can nver….they are foolish and talkattive…

if you cant love the nature you cant love this movie which is all about to show how pleasent nature is.

if you cant the sentiment of this movie; how can you love your family centiments…. only [trash talk] doesnt have centiments in thier lives….

this stupid search india blog is all set to destroy the fame and name of tamil cinema…i see only fools comment on the good movies… they live like a fool and they will die like a fool because they fool others by thier deceptive description…..

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

    1. You write above: What do you think tamil cinema can offer to your $16 or 15; do you want them to create a heaven for you…

No, thanks. We don’t want Heaven.

We just want an entertaining movie. It’s truly an unjust world when you can watch Heath Ledger’s non pareil performance as the joker in Dark Knght for $7.25 but you have to shell out $16 for this Kuselan garbage.

    2. You write: this search india is the best stupid site to review a movie…if you cant love the nature you cant love this movie which is all about to show how pleasent nature is.

Dai, Thavakalai (frog) – What does nature have anything to do with Kuselan?

    3. You write: If you could not taste the beauty of Kuselan; you mean you are on the track of this perishing world.

If, as you claim, the world is on the track to perishing, the only good will be the absence of idiots like you.

    4. As for the filthy expression (which we removed) you used against us, were you looking in the mirror.

    5. You write: i see only fools comment on the good movies

Since you’ve posted a comment here, what does that make you? Have you heard of the English expression – hoist with his own petard.

The most honest review. After this movie is the “Dad of Dasa”

Rajni Fans dont use their 2 organs – ears and brain.

Because we must not promote such crap like Kuselan.

I saw many reviews saying “One of the best films to Tamil industry by Vasu-R.K. team again” yes, another crap – and this time its gone worse.

    Congrats this time.

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

You write above: we must not promote such crap like Kuselan.

The tragedy is most Tamil movies that release on the East Coast (of the U.S.) are like Kuselan – plain horrible.

  14. sanewar   August 4, 2008 at 12:11 pm

As soon as i heard P.Vasu is going to remake the kathaparayumbol movie, i decided not to watch it ( i am a fan of rajini). When i heard the songs , it almost proved my thoughts of how this movie is going to come. Now this review, well, kuselan shouldnt have come for rajini, i prefer vijay for this role.

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

With the same screenplay and the same dodo P.Vasu at the helm, we doubt Vijay would have made any difference to Kuselan.

  15. tkktalks   August 4, 2008 at 4:16 pm

The film was worse than your review. What a bull shit..!

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

True, Kuselan was awful. A waste of $$$ and time.

  16. gandhiji   August 4, 2008 at 6:13 pm

    thank God for youtube!

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

We thought the climax was flat and very contrived.

  17. abhi_kochi   August 5, 2008 at 3:03 am

Nicely reviewed.. Thanks. I expected the makers of this one to understand that the strength of the original movie was its simplicity. ‘Kadhaparayumbol’ was a well balanced and nicely written story. Put some spice and u can taste only spice here. It would have been so cool if Rajini dared to take up the role of the barber instead of superstar. Of course his ego won’t allow that! I don’t understand why these kinds of actors always under estimate the audience and some section of audience always expect nothing great from these actors!

And to the reviewer.. you said: “By making the sisters of a convent school seem so disgustingly obsessed with getting the superstar to visit their school, Kuselan casts these Christian nuns in a most unfavorable light. We have a hard time believing this subliminal assault on Christianity in Kuselan was accidental”

What the hell was that man? What made you think it is an assault on Christianity? eh? Christianity is about Christ and not about priests. I suggest you be more open-minded while reviewing.

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

    1. We haven’t seen the Malayalam movie Kadhaparayumbol on which Kuselan is based. But we’ve heard that it was nicely executed.

    2. You write above: It would have been so cool if Rajini dared to take up the role of the barber instead of superstar.

That would be too challenging for Rajinikanth to attempt.

    3. You write: What made you think it is an assault on Christianity? eh? Christianity is about Christ and not about priests. I suggest you be more open-minded while reviewing.

Two things: 1) The behavior of the school principal when the barber can’t pay the fees of his daughter 2) The Christian nuns’ obsession in getting the superstar to their school. Together these two incidents, we thought, cast these Christian figures in a poor light. No, Christianity is not just about Christ..it’s also about the people holding key positions in a religion. The behavior of a Pope, Parish Priest or Pujari is a reflection on the religion. Plus, the dominant Hindu majority in India, which is still mostly tolerant, has on occasion displayed intolerant tendencies lately.

  18. gandhiji   August 5, 2008 at 8:31 am

Excellent suggestion by abhi.. without makeup, Rajini would have been great as a barber!.. he missed a good chance.. I hope he will retire his superstar mantle atleast after robot and start taking up such cool roles.

Searchindia, you are underestimating him.. he is definitely capable of doing the barber (barber role, i mean).

And regarding the climax, I think the things that led up to the climax (I also happened to watch a puerile Vadivelu scene for a minute) would have frustrated you very much.. it was quite moving to see thalaivar Rajini shed tears onscreen.. maybe I am just biased. I only watched 5 minutes of the climax.. and I was impressed.

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

You write above: Searchindia, you are underestimating him.. he is definitely capable of doing the barber (barber role, i mean).

Maybe, we should have worded our response to abhi better. It requires boldness to take on such a challenging assignment as they are so unlike the larger than life roles that Rajini has played in recent years in some of his movies like Sivaji, Basha and Kuselan.

We think the overall box office response to Kuselan has been subdued. Have you heard otherwise?

  19. gandhiji   August 5, 2008 at 10:17 am

It’s too early, I guess.. It is too tough to gauge the actual response by reading internet reports.. that too in the first couple of weeks when all shows are booked in advance by fanatics. I don’t think it will beat Sivaji or Dasavatharam.. But we cannot underestimate the Rajini fanatics.. They may revisit the theaters just to beat Dasavatharam’s collection records. I am still fuming at Pee Vasu for messing up.

You probably saw the Chennai BO report on behindwoods.. They have released in lesser number of screens than Dasa/Sivaji.

    No. Days Completed: 3
No. Shows in Chennai over this weekend: 252
Average Theatre Occupancy over this weekend: 95 %
Collection over this weekend in Chennai: Rs.81,45,015

    as opposed to Dasa
    No. Days Completed: 3 Days
No. Shows in Chennai over this weekend: 393
Average Theatre Occupancy over this weekend: 90 %
Collection over this weekend in Chennai: Rs.97,55,397

I couldn’t find such stats for Sivaji..

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

You write above: I don’t think it will beat Sivaji or Dasavatharam.

    We agree with that.

There were about 25-30 people in the hall for the 3:00PM screening (on Friday, August 1, 2008) of Kuselan at Multiplex Cinemas (Towne Center), East Windsor (New Jersey). Definitely not a great response.

  21. shades of grey   August 7, 2008 at 2:55 am

Kuselan was awful. I’ve never been a fan of Rajini, I do believe he’s worked really hard at developing his iconic status. However, in my opinion he’s not an actor, an entertainer but definitely not an actor. Pasupathy on the other hand is an actor and a talented one at that. Maybe that’s why I’m extremely disappointed in his lackluster performance in Kuselan. I was hoping for a simple tale illustrating the complexities of friendship. But I guess that was asking too much from a Rajini film.

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

    1. You write above: Kuselan was awful.

    Yes, yes and yes.

    2. You write: I was hoping for a simple tale illustrating the complexities of friendship.

Complexity is anathema to Indian film-makers who barely skim the surface of any theme they pick.

Fools talks while wise people listen

I think you shouldn’t have argued. By blabbering you proved yourself you were a fool. I personally think your statement was completely senseless and it was like a comment made by a stupid drunkard trying to make a wise saying..

    Hi others,
Recently I watched THALAPATHI directed by Manirathnam. Anyone interested please comment how the movie is like. It’s mixed reviews everywhere. So I want to see how the people here think about that movie. (I think the music was fabulous ,wonderful!I liked the movie a bit but had a feeling that it was inspired from MAHABHARATH 🙂 )

  24. asamband   August 8, 2008 at 12:16 pm

mitchel – did you tried Badshah…that is my favourite.

Regarding ‘Thalapathi’, it was inspired from MAHABHARATH and was known to everyone at that time. Instead of getting Rajni killed at the end (per Karnan – Duryodhanan story) they sacrificed Mammooty as otherwise Rajni fans won’t accept the end and the film can’t be successful at Box Office.

  25. mitchell   August 8, 2008 at 10:20 pm

Badshah? , Yes i will try that soon . Thanks asamband.

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

    1. You write above: go and watch the movie first

We did that on August 1 at Multiplex Cinemas (Towne Center), East Windsor (New Jersey).

    2. Kuselan is plain junk.

    Forget us.

Even the general public have shown Kuselan the middle finger.

    Hi,

We have to think once before watching this movie. Mr.Superstar who claims to be a very good man has shown his clear image. We shouldn’t find fault with him. He is an actor and he is not god. We took him for god. From now on atleast we all treat gods as entertainers and not preachers. Watch Movie as Movie. And moreover for all tamilians, we should understand rajini is not tamilian . He has just come here for money. He has earned and will be his motive. Don’t believe anyone who pretends. We don’t have time to look after our parents or elders but we have time to speculate what will be rajini’s message, hairstyle etc etc. You all have to even understand this too. All tamil channels which is claimed to be tamil channels is going back at rajini. They too ignore tamil feelings. Anyway i know it is waste of time writing on blog about this issue. I am writing this for the sake of people who really cares of tamil cause.

We wonder if the other sub-cultures of India (i.e. besides Tamils) also treat their film stars as Gods.

Hi, I haven’t seen Kuselan but going by the reviews, I might not see it after all. Or, I might decide to see it just to find out how bad it can really be 🙂 Could you please post a review of ‘Katha parayumbol’? I have heard that it’s a good movie.

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

You write above: Could you please post a review of ‘Katha parayumbol’? I have heard that it’s a good movie.

Since we are based in the U.S., it’s not that easy to get a copy of Katha Parayumbol (with English sub-titles). We checked on Netflix but did not see it there. We’ll see if we can get it from some other place.

  29. mitchell   August 13, 2008 at 11:58 am

Can you include a review about the Tamil movie, Mouna Ragam?. I heard the background music by composer Ilayaraja is really nice.I want to know from your point of view how the movie is like.

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

You write above: Can you include a review about the Tamil movie, Mouna Ragam? I heard the background music by composer Ilayaraja is really nice.

You are right. The music in Mouna Ragam is lovely. We just re-watched (and listened to) the songs China, China & Mandram Vantha on our iPhone via YouTube.

Simply superb. Illayaraja at his finest.

Unfortunately, Netflix does not have Mouna Ragam. So, it’d be hard to get hold of a DVD of this Tamil movie in the U.S. So, we can’t do the review. Sorry.

As we type this response, we are humming the tune of the Mandram Vantha song from Moung Ragam.

  30. gandhiji   August 13, 2008 at 1:47 pm

hey mitchell, did you recently convert into a tamilian.. why this sudden interest in tamil movies(or is it manirathinam movies)?

i rate “mouna ragam” higher than nayagan and thalapathi. beautiful movie.. not sure if i like it as much now as i did eons ago.

Not sure if I am allowed to post this information..
google “[deleted]” or “[deleted]”.. he covers tamil movies extensively.. and occasionally some hindi movies too.. i love his reviews because he is also a rajini fan. 🙂 His reviews are objective for non-rajini movies.

on an unrelated matter.. just stumbled upon a lankan-tamil rapper.. the lyrics are hilarious..

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Kq16GAuNcg has another of her “Duppa” rap.. shot in TN. People are raving about the “unusual” beats.. They don’t know that all they have to do is go to one “Saavu Oorvalam” in TN.

She probably got new a lease of internet life because of her song featuring in the current #2 ‘Pineapple Express’.. I liked ‘Superbad’ and ‘Knocked Up’ from that crew. Did you like ’em?

What will be the next week’s #2 movie.. Can Jack Black , Robert Downney Jr. and Ben Stiller shake Heath Ledger from the top?

Or will it be Scarlett Johansson’s huge tatas.

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

You write: They don’t know that all they have to do is go to one “Saavu Oorvalam” in TN

Very true…we’ve seen quite a few tipsy dancers in those processions too.

You write: Can Jack Black , Robert Downney Jr. and Ben Stiller shake Heath Ledger from the top?

Doubt it. Dark Knight is still going strong.

We are eagerly looking forward to Vicky Cristina Barcelona (from Woody Allen). We liked Javier Bardem in No Country for Old Men (Great Movie) and boy are we pinning high hopes on strong>Vicky Cristina Barcelona.

Hey Gandhiji, its true I had got a sudden interest in Tamil movies.I think Tamil movies from the 1990s are far ahead in class when compared with their Hindi counterparts. I watched Mouna Ragam and Thalapathi recently ,the music was fantastic, but its a pity I cant enjoy the lyrics because i dont know Tamil 🙁

I am sorry my topic is not related to KUSELAN,but I want the reviewer or the people seeing this post to judge which movie acording to them is Manirathnam’s greatest (My personal vote is for MOUNA RAGAM)

Next I am going to watch Minsara Kanavu ,actually its called as Sapnay in Hindi.I never watched Sapnay and I know Kajol’s a great actress and Iam eager to watch the original in Tamil.I think you can get this movie easily from your Netflix queue ( Iam just expecting you can at least review this 🙂 )

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

Yes, Netflix has Minsara Kaavu. Just added to it to our Netflix queue.

  33. mitchell   August 15, 2008 at 7:01 am

I think Kuselan can be forgotten.. I am already seeing reports that Rajini has return 10 crores of his salary to distributors.

Scarlett Johansson been Woody’s obsession over the past few years.. I think he is obsessed with her big ‘uns(I think they are real) like me.. they are sharing a Manirathinam-Madhavan type relationship, I guess.. maybe more platonic than M&M.

Tropic Thurnder beat Knight on Wednesday.. but probably will not win the weekend.

  37. mitchell   August 15, 2008 at 10:20 am

I love this one. This is ripped from the start of a Tamil movie I like. Pity there’s a discontinuity at 1:30.The score after that is simply superb.I want to keep humming that tune.

My music knowledge is no good.. but some people are saying that it was lifted from
    http://www.itwofs.com/audio/LoveThemeFlashDance-GeorgioMoroder.rm

Even if it was not original, that piece of music is what made Mouna Ragam more appealing.

Anyway, did you watch the tamil version or the telugu version? The link you posted is from the telugu version.. the tamil version has Revathi’s childhood pictures in the titles… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0eu7cOJ3Vbc this youtube channel has the whole movie split into multiple parts.. watching them now.. thanks to you. Revathi has aged badly.. she used to look so cute before marriage.

Mouna Ragam has just hijacked the Kuselan page.

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

You write: Anyway, did you watch the tamil version or the telugu version? The link you posted is from the telugu version

Tamil…Sorry about posting the Telugu version.

  39. mitchell   August 16, 2008 at 9:01 pm

I think I watched the Telugu version of the movie Mouna Ragam , thinking it was Tamil.. 🙂 The link I posted was also a telugu version it seems .What a shame!

If you can’t follow either Tamil or Telugu (AND if the movie was just a dubbed version…not a remake), does it matter?

  40. gandhiji   August 17, 2008 at 7:02 am

Not sure why SI (when I say SI, the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue comes to me mind) apologized.. but I accept 🙂

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

    1. Not sure why SI (when I say SI, the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue comes to me mind) apologized

Comparison to the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue? Hey, we’ll take that as a compliment. 🙂

    2. Yes, we shouldn’t have apologized. It was actually Mitchell who posted the Telugu version. Apology withdrawn (like Al Gore’s withdrawing his initial concession to Bush in 2000…the whole thing was so bizarre beyond words) 🙂

  41. mitchell   August 17, 2008 at 8:47 am

You say ‘ If you can’t follow either Tamil or Telugu (AND if the movie was just a dubbed version…not a remake), does it matter? ‘

For me it matters , I will always consider the dubbed version as secondary and unworthy of viewing.. Even if I want to watch a movie which was adapted from a book , I will first consider reading that book..

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

You write above: Even if I want to watch a movie which was adapted from a book , I will first consider reading that book
We did the same with Mira Nair’s Notebook. Both the book (by Jhumpa Lahiri) & the movie were lovely.

  42. mallukuttan   August 17, 2008 at 2:51 pm

As soon as I heard the director is vasu, I gave up my hopes. The songs break your eardrum. Even Kadhaparayumbol, the original on is not brilliant, just a good movie, which succeeded due to brilliant perfomances and perfect execution. If Rajni gives one more such movie, i am pretty sure he will book his ticket to hell.

Had anyone ever heard of marudanayagam? There are no producers for such a fantastic movie.. But for craps like dasa, you find thousands.. Just because people watch masalas and trash good movies. Eg: Singh is Kinng& Manorama six feet under (Great muvie) one was blockbuster, and the other flopbuster. How annoying guys.

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

You write above: If Rajni gives one more such movie, i am pretty sure he will book his ticket to hell.

We don’t agree. Avanukku anga Mache irukku (Rajinikanth has a lucky mole, you know where).

We enjoyed Manorama Six Feet Under (Anyone remember Jack Nicholson’s Chinatown?)

  43. kevin   August 20, 2008 at 7:20 am

Waste and worst film in Tamil industry and Rajini make me mad of not only me he make mad of all whole Tamilans…..

    Tamilians are not fool..

    Mind it Rajini

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

Yes, Kuselan is bad. But Satyam is far worse.

I think this flop show will haunt Rajinikanth for years to come. He definitely shouldn’t have attempted this cameo role. I think he tried it to make quick money for the producers but at last the idea backfired it seems. The entire crew are in some bad luck maybe. Also I heard that there is a fake mms clip of the lead actress being circulated around the State .. Maybe the distributors are trying to take revenge this way (just joking :))

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

Rajinikanth should return the money to the paying audience too.

You write above: He definitely shouldn’t have attempted this cameo role

Yes, we like your use of the phrase cameo role.

What a pathetic piece of shit Kuselan turned out to be.

  45. chennaiarun2007   September 7, 2008 at 2:30 pm

Kuselan is a film which talks about human emotions like selfishness and friendship.Agreed that the film is bit glamourisd compared to Katha Pariyombol, but I do not think the story was lost in commercialisation of the film. The film Kuselan did not do well bcos audience in chennai expected Kuselan to be a ragni mass hero film. still critics and some section of audiences in chennai have accepted the film. all the people(whether rajni fans or not) had found no loopholes or faults in storyline.

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

You write above: still critics…have accepted the film

    We disagree. Please read this.

  46. 1012900   September 10, 2008 at 1:10 pm

KUSELAN was a PIECE OF CRAP… I’m a guy who likes all types of movies.. i even liked Om Shanti Om.. Vettaiyaadu vilaiyaadu..Billa and even ATM… so now anyone can see how F#&*ING HORRIBLE is Kuselan.. i didn’t see the original “Kathaparayumbol” but i heard it was DAMN GOOD.. it had something called a story..nice dialogs, good screenplay, very good acting, natural comedy (u know, the kind that can happen in everyday life)..and good music…!!!
