Arya Review – O My Brotheru, Idhi Yentha Trashu

Arya 2 Review – A Back-Alley Abortion

Cheppu ra, Andhra vaallu eppudu kallu tagutara (hey, are the folks in Andhra forever imbibing moonshine)?

Folks, the unequivocal answer can only be a resounding Yes.

How else could this stupid shit Arya become a hit and why else would the Tollywood illiterati produce a followup (Arya 2) to this insufferable trash.

When we saw Geeta (Anuradha Mehta) tearfully ejaculate naaku Arya kaavali (I want Arya) on the marriage dais toward the end of the movie, we felt like screaming mee andariki tala kaavali (y’all need a brain).

Since our Netflix DVD of the Telugu movie Arya came with English subtitles (even for the songs), following this junk was not a big deal.

The Asinine Story
While there are many villains in Arya, first and foremost is the worse than sophomoric love story involving the movie’s eponymous young lad Arya (Allu Arjun) for Geetanjali (Anuradha Mehta), a fellow student in his college.

No matter that the gal has a steady nut-case of a boyfriend in Ajay (Siva Balaji), the son of a murderous politician, our young hero turns up proclaiming the wondrous virtues of one-sided love.

Yeah, you read right. This clown of a hero goes around sprouting the gospel of one-sided love including in that horrid Oh Brotheru song. No kidding.

Such is the trash that’s heaped on the heads of those unfortunate enough to see this crap.

The man (ir)responsible for this villainous folly unfolding on the screen is a former math teacher named Sukumar, who takes credit for the incomprehensible equation of the story, screenplay, dialog and direction.

Neanderthal Leaps
Somebody ought to tell the pint-sized Allu Arjun that aerobics and neanderthal leaps at the banana on a high branch are not the same as dancing.

To see this short bozo take on thugs two times his size is to marvel at a squealing monkey running hither and thither with its tail afire.

Which One is It?
Anuradha Mehta went about the whole movie with an agonized expression on her face leaving us confounded as to whether the poor gal was suffering from dysmenorrhea or dyschezia.

Which one is it. Any idea, folks? πŸ˜‰

As for as any acting talent in this girl, we found none although we looked hard from top to bottom of her anatomy.

When Geeta sighs Prema ante intaena, in-khemi laedha (is this all there’s to love), we sobbed Cinema ante intaena, in-khemi laedha (is this all there’s to cinema).

Music
God, we’re still recovering from the Oh, My Brotheruu…One-Sidu Love ra ento Betteruu horror of a song and dance. Ugh.

And what’s with the mix of Hindi, English and Telugu in the songs. As in the You RockMy World nonsense.

The A ante Amalapuram item song/dance atop a moving train should really be T ante Trash.

Full Blown Idiocy
Why movies like Arya are made and how such shit turn into hits are questions best left to the kallu tagae pichchi vedhavaluku (hooch drinking idiots).

And horror of horrors, to think this cerebral trauma inducing colossus of nonsense a.k.a. Arya is inspiring a follow-on in Arya 2 is ample testament to the poverty of ideas and bankruptcy of talent plaguing Tollywood.

Devvuda, Devvuda.

What a depressing spectacle.

This is beyond even his ken.

    Yes, folks. Arshad is right.

Arya is being remade in Tamil as Kutty with Prabhu Kasthuriraja a.k.a. Dhanush and Shriya Saran.

BTW Arya2 is not the sequel of Arya. They are cashing in on the name because its the same director-hero combination.

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

    You write: same director-hero combination.

Yeah, same mis-director and same O My Brotheruu.

We guessed that it wouldn’t be a sequel to Arya because you can’t have a sequel to something so stupid.

What is it with your choice of Telugu movies?
Was it the spirit of adventure or a self-destructive tendency that made you watch this movie ?

For the last several years, Telugu movies (Tamil and Kannada too) have showcased some of the worst overacting there has ever been. And what passes in the name of comedy is atrocious. While the culprit is mostly a single guy in Tamil (Vivek or Vadivelu), it is a bunch of fellas in Telugu (Bramhanandam, Ali, Sunil and two more folks whose names I do not know).
Like those Hindi movies during 1988-1998 which invariably had Shakti Kapoor, Kader Khan and Gulshan Grover, you have these folks in Telugu in every movie.

You are advised to heed to the suggestions of well-meaning Telugu vallu readers of SI before watching Telugu movies.
Apart from many of these flicks, I have also seen Godavari, Grahanam and Swathi Kiranam, three Telugu movies that I believe must be watched.

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

You write: What is it with your choice of Telugu movies?

We were doing a trial run and steeling ourselves for Abhishek’s Raavan, whenever that comes down the pike.

Seriously, SI reader Chaitu1987 recommended in September that we see Arya.

Once we heard Arya was a big hit, it should’ve rung alarm bells (but alas it didn’t).

Folks here scale big rocky peaks (which must be harder because there you don’t have so many crevices that you can use for hand-grip unlike in the above video).

  9. chaitu1987   November 2, 2009 at 2:26 am

    Oh, come on now.

With Arya 2 releasing in November, I advised you to see Arya which had the same combo.

By the way, Swathi Kiranam was directed by K. Viswanath, my favourite director. Godavari is a decent movie and Arya is better than the trash that Vishal, Vijay … churn out (its a relative comparison of course).

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

You write: Arya is better than the trash that Vishal, Vijay … churn out

Ippudu artham ayyindhi (Now we understand).

You are slyly trying to say Telugu movies are better than Tamil movies. Avuna kaada Hanumanthu (isn’t it true) πŸ˜‰

Kinda like arguing whether Hitler or Stalin was the bigger monster.

  10. ratnakar   November 2, 2009 at 3:35 am

Most of the people who watch Telugu movies nowadays in theaters are college students or bored kiddos or females wanting to ogle at their favorite stars, that is the reason why Tollywood gets away with this kinda rubbish.

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

As if Bollywood and Kollywood are any different.

  17. medytrance   November 2, 2009 at 4:45 pm

For some strange reason (charm, I think), Allu Arjun seems to have a sizable fan following in Kerala. I believe all of his recent movies, including Happy and Arya, have been dubbed into Malayalam and released there and they seem to have had decent runs too. Also, you get to see a lot of his songs (requested by viewers) on the Mallu music channels.

Quite an achievement this for the young actor because he is the first Telugu hero to have crossed the language barrier and to have been accepted with an open heart by the Mallu audience.

So I don’t think AA needs to worry much about your ridiculing criticism of his acting/dancing skills. Also, he needn’t be upset by the ‘pint-sized’ comment either, because pint is the average Indian’s size and his movies are meant for Indians.

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

    1. You write: I don’t think AA needs to worry much about your ridiculing criticism of his acting/dancing skills….

We’ve no illusions that anything we write has any impact at all.

If Abhishek Bachchan can survive in Bollywood and Ajith in Kollywood, why not Allu Arjun in Tollywood.

    2. You write: Allu Arjun seems to have a sizable fan following in Kerala.

    Surprise, surprise.

We thought Kerala’s literacy rate was 100%. Maybe, that was a statistical error. πŸ˜‰

Seriously, odd that the discerning Malayalee film-goers should relish this clown.

Well, this is Incredible India after all. Anything is possible.

    • chennaiarun2007   March 20, 2010 at 4:02 am

      TO medytrance:

Allu Arjun’s rise in Kerala evokes no surprise. For one who has closely followed Malayalam film industry,it has deteriorated from the highs of 1980s and 1990s to a point now where commercial masala-movies are coming thick and fast.
Even stars like Mohanlal and Mammootty who acted initially in good realistic movies are now forced to act in masala movies like Chotta Mumbai and Rajamanikam. The reason is due to the influence of Tamil movies which has spoiled the Malayalam industry.
The audience profile has also changed. Earlier a large number of family audiences used to come and watch Malayalam films,so they rejected masala movies. But now, more youth audiences are coming so even films like Billa(Ajith) are running to packed houses in Kerala. Earlier Tamil films used to be rejected in Kerala because of non-content.But now that is not the case.
Earlier in 80s and 90s,there were a good group of directors like Sathyan Athnikad and Lohitadas. Now,such breed of directors has increasingly diminished. Only Lohitadas is trying his best to restore the industry back to its old glory.

      SearchIndia.com Responds:

More power to Lohitadas and his fellow travelers!

BTW, Medytrance ‘passed way.’ But it may have been reincarnated in a new avatar. πŸ˜‰

      • chennaiarun2007   March 20, 2010 at 9:16 am

        Hi SI,

Oh sorry,I made a mistake.I forgot that Lohitadas is dead.Maybe his films caused me to think like that. Please forgive me.

  18. shadowfax_arbit   November 3, 2009 at 2:31 am

I agree with Chaitu on this.

Telugu movies are currently way ahead of Tamil movies when it comes to unique stunts, innovative comedy, heroism etc.

But trust me, Tamil movies are getting closer (lead by Vishal, Vijay, Surya and co.) and soon will give stiff competition.

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

What that jackass Vishal features in are not movies.

The sight of that Homo erectus member howling like a hyena toward the end of Sathyam is a nightmare that will torment us forever:

The final moments of Satyam with a head tonsured Vishal ranting and raving on the stage like a lunatic were unendurable torture. What would we have given for a remote control with a mute button to shut out the maniacal noise emanating from the screen.

If Satyam proves anything at all, itÒ€ℒs that a bunch of retards can come together and make a Tamil movie.

  19. ratnakar   November 3, 2009 at 4:08 am

@SI: “Seriously, odd that the discerning Malayalee film-goers should relish this clown.”

Well if Poles could like Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham, and Japs could like Muthu, anything is possible. πŸ˜‰

On a serious note, what i heard from most of my Mallu friends, is that the discerning Mallu movie goers, are slowly decreasing, most of them prefer the Bolly-Kolly trash, and that is affecting the Mallu movies, which are going down nowadays too.

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

    1. You write: Well if Poles could like Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham

Now you know why they have that infamous expression – Stupid Pollock.

    2. We still think our Mallu favorites Mammooty, Meera Jasmine, Navya Nair and Padmapriya have some class.

‘Magadheera’ review cheyyochchu kada. Megastar Chiranjeevi koduku Ram Charan Teja hero andulo. Recentga Ikkda ‘superhit’ ayina cinema ade πŸ™‚

Alaage, meeru Chiranjeevi patha cinemaloo kooda review cheyyochchu kada viz., ‘Abhilasha’ ‘Khaidi’, ‘Challenge’ etc. These movies were part of the golden run Chiranjeevi had during mid to late 80s’ that ultimately made him a ‘megastar’ in Telugu.

During those days Chiranjeevi was friends with Yandamuri Virendranath, a popular novelist in Telugu. A considerable number of his novels, albeit contorted heavily, were made into movies starring Chiranjeevi until they fell out with each other god knows when and for what.

Yandamuri Virendranath, however, is one of the few genuine novelists in Telugu who wrote quite a few very interesting novels such as ‘Tulasi Dalam’, ‘Tulasi’ (which Ram Gopal Varma says inspired his ‘Poonkh’), ‘Abhilasha’, ‘Dabbu to the power of Dabbu’ and scores of others. Two of my favorites are his ‘Nissabdam Neeku Naaku Madhya'(‘Silence between you and me’) and ‘Rushi'(‘Saint’). Virendranath’s novels used to stand out among the utter trash of his peers which used to(and still) hover mostly between ‘soft porn potboiler’ and ‘childish problem drama’. Virendranath is heavily influenced by western authors and his story-telling talent though, i think, is better than some of them. His ‘Prardhana’ (‘Prayer’; name of the protagonist) was ‘inspired’ by Robin Cook’s ‘Fever’. I read both the novels and though Cook’s basic theme was copied, Virendranath bettered upon Cook in crucial part of the novel i.e. inventing cure for cancer. Virendranath’s ‘cure’ is much more original and a lot more fun to read :-).

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

    1. You write: Alaage, meeru Chiranjeevi patha cinemaloo kooda review cheyyochchu kada viz., ‘Abhilasha’

When we want to convince people that human evolution is mostly still work in progress and has a ways to go, we show them this YouTube video from Chiranjeevi’s Abhilasha. We still haven’t understood why the lovebirds had to stand atop the bus with Chiranjeevi holding Radhika precariously. Maybe, this penchant for the bizarre is what it takes to be a megastar in Telugu filmdom. πŸ˜‰

    2. You write: Alaage, meeru Chiranjeevi patha cinemaloo kooda review cheyyochchu kada viz., ‘Abhilasha’ ‘Khaidi’, ‘Challenge’ etc.

Netflix doesn’t have ‘Abhilasha’ ‘Khaidi’, ‘Challenge’ et al. So we’ll have to go with what they have.

We’re getting Yamudiki Mogudu tomorrow. After that, maybe Pasivadi Pranam.

BTW, these are the Chiranjeevi films Netflix stocks: Yamudiki Mogudu (1987), Indra (2002), Pasivadi Pranam (1986), Jai Chiranjeeva (2005), Main Hoon Rakhwala (2005), Diler (2005), Tagore (2003), Iddaru Mitrulu (1999), Big Boss (1995), Mutta Maistry (1993), Attaku Yamudu Ammaiki Mogudu (1987), Aaradhana (1986), Pasivadi Pranam (1986) and Vijetha (1984). That’s all.

    3. You write: ‘Magadheera’ review cheyyochchu kada. Megastar Chiranjeevi koduku Ram Charan Teja hero andulo.

If we go toward Edison (NJ), we’ll watch Magadheera. Still running in Anil Ambani’s crappy ‘MovieShitty’ theatre.
