Housefull 2 Review – Entertaining Piffle

Given Akshay Kumar’s unceasing penchant for starring in films that require you to leave your brains at home, we walked into Housefull 2 with high apprehensions and low expectations.

Boy, were we surprised.

‘Tis true, Housefull 2 is total bakwas (nonsense) but thankfully of the amusing kind.

Directed by Sajid Khan based on a ‘story’ by Sajid Nadiadwala, Housefull 2, set in London, is a wildly over the top affair with bum-chomping crocodiles, dick-biting pythons, parachuting grooms, dacoits-turned-billionaires shooting Prince Charles etc.

But the movie manages to eke out lots of laughs.

For us, the two biggest delights of the movie were the coming together of real-life brothers Randhir Kapoor and Rishi Kapoor on the screen and the high humor quotient.

Randhir and Rishi play step-brothers in the film and do a superb job.

Together, they deliver an acting lesson to the younger generation of Bollywood stars.

Bollywood writers usually do a lousy job with comedies, which often end up hopelessly crass, crude and crappy.

In Housefull 2, although the nonsense never stops careful attention to the writing pays off for the laughs don’t stop too.

Housefull 2 – The Story?

Ha ha ha, you must be crazy if you insist on knowing the story of Housefull 2.

Didn’t we already say it’s nonsense?

Well, if you insist.

It all starts with the high aspirations two estranged brothers Daboo (Randhir Kapoor) and Chintu (Rishi Kapoor) have of snaring a super-wealthy son-in-law for their respective daughters Bobby (Jacqueline Fernandez) and Heena (Asin).

The rest of the movie is a fallout of their high aspirations and a lengthy chronicle of insults, revenge, hiring of two crooks Sunny (Akshay Kumar) and Max (John Abraham), love, fights, flashbacks and confusion galore.

Akshay Kumar and John Abraham play their characters with enormous gusto, with Akshay having an edge in the acting department.

Shreyas Talpade and Ritesh Deshmukh do a more than adequate job in contributing to the mischief and adding to the nonsense + amusement quotient.

Where there are four young men and four babes, love’s bound to follow in short order.

And so woven into this endless nonsense are four love-stories.

Mithun Chakraborty, Johnny Lever and yesteryear Bollywood ‘rapist’ Ranjeet are part of the frolic.

Four Girls

There’s not much to be said of the four girls – Jacqueline Fernandez, Asin Thottumkal, Zarine Khan and Shazahn Padamsee.

None of them can spell A C T I N G.

Most of the time, the girls strut around in skimpy costumes showing us generous glimpses of flesh.

Of the four girls, Asin is easily the worst in the acting department.

With a plastic smile plastered to her face in almost every scene she appears, this South Indian atrocity is one awful actress.

One of nature’s many cruelties that Indians have to suffer in silence. Say, is there a reservation quota in Bollywood?

Music and Items Number

Not classic but certainly nothing to complain about.

Mercifully, most of them are choreographed well too. None of those simian dances.

Item queen Malaika Arora is a picture of sensuousness, grace and class in the Anarkali Disco Chali number.

Malaika makes other Bollywood item players like Kareena, Katrina etc look like wanton hussies.

Housefull 2 – Go for It

We certainly had a nice time.

Going by the frequent guffaws, the rest of the audience too seemed to be enjoying Housefull 2 at a theatre on the East Coast.

SearchIndia.com recommends Housefull 2 if you’re yearning for some laughs this weekend.

The movie is playing in theatres across Amreeka.

3 consecutive positive reviews of bollywood movies by SI! When did that last happen?

Has bollywood suddenly improved leaps and bounds in 2012???

    or

    Is SI becoming too soft?!!!

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

3 consecutive positive reviews by SI?

    Never happened before!

    Maybe, Bollywood is getting better!

Considering the big investment going into every Hindi movie (Rs 50 cr on average) these days they’d better start making decent movies.

Of the three favorable reviews (Kahaani, Agent Vinod & Housefull 2), one (Agent Vinod) was (almost) universally panned by critics and could end up a big flop.

Maybe SI is keeping its brain at home when watching Hindi movies.. which is not necessarily a bad thing. Too much of brain activity is not a good thing.

      SearchIndia.com Responds:

Not to worry, brain accompanying body to the phillums.

All three were paisa vasool movies in our not-so-humble opinion.

3 consecutive positive reviews by SI is indeed surprising.

Just to get back on track, you might want to review ‘Moonu’ or how about wait for this Telugu movie. As per this trailer, story seems literally out of the box πŸ˜‰

      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lbWURFD4vdE

Watch the whole trailer. Its hilarious πŸ˜€

      SearchIndia.com Responds:

Hey, Moonu looks like an Ombathu film. πŸ˜‰

Sometimes the trailer is not a good reflection of the movie and it might even turn out to be decent.

BTW, you should see the Telugus drooling over Samantha here. Pichchivalu (crazy people).

    Just two parts?

we heard rumors that Kamal’s magnum op would be released in 10-parts! πŸ˜‰

Since the 2012 Cannes Film Festival is from May 16 to May 27, the day of reckoning for Ulaga Madayan’s Vishwaroopam is drawing near.

“3 consecutive positive reviews by SI?”

You guys also praised Agneepath as well, didn’t you? Well, sort of, but it didn’t seem negative from the outset.

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

No, SI did not do the new Agneepath review.

That was done by our actor friend in New Jersey. You can see his byline just below the Agneepath review headline.

We (as in SI) reviewed the Old Agneepath.

    • ao   April 7, 2012 at 9:35 pm

Oh no, I was talking about the one where you headline ‘Agneepath: Tribute or Travesty?’.

      SearchIndia.com Responds:

That was also not by SI but by a SI reader.

      • Naveen   April 8, 2012 at 10:12 pm

@ao – The “Tribute or Travesty” review wasn’t really a positive about Agneepath.

        • ao   April 9, 2012 at 8:48 pm

I know it really wasn’t positive, but the reviewer pretty much praised each actor in the film and he/she wasn’t a fan of the original so I’m basing it on how the tone of the review was.

Plus, if you compare it to a standard SI review that usually doesn’t spare anyone or anything, while knowing their opinions about the original, it didn’t seem to be negative.

          • Naveen   April 10, 2012 at 12:26 pm

I am that reviewer who pretty much praised every actor… πŸ™‚

SI has a certain style and tone that is hard to emulate and naturally you will find non-SI reviews posted in SI are a little more tolerant (for lack of a better word)

The recommendation section in the review pretty much sums up the movie. Sometimes even if the actors do a decent job the direction / screenplay screws up all the good effort.

The first half is fast and engaging but it loses steam and degenerates to a looooooooong and boooooooooooooooring second half.

It just goes on and on and on until they seemed to have ran out of ideas.

The fight between Hrithik and Sanjay Dutt was disappointing.

The new Agneepath does not break any new grounds.

It offers nothing new in terms of a revenge movie. It is no Kill Bill or Sholay.

It is one man’s fantasy to rehash his dad’s trash.

It is better than the old version but that is the best I can say about it.

  4. Hari Jr   April 10, 2012 at 11:18 pm

Watched this film. Not a good comedy movie. Was entertaining in many parts but after Boman Irani enters, the movie enters the absolute zone of stupidity and a flurry of nonsense flows till the end.

Akshay kumar, rishi kapoor were good. Randhir too was decent but in some scenes he irritated.

    Riteish and Shreyas were ok.

    John could have been better.

Jacqueline and Zarine are easily the worst for acting.

Asin and the other one werent that great either.

And how can Asin keep a crocodile as a pet ??

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

You write: And how can Asin keep a crocodile as a pet ??

Would you have preferred it the other way, the crocodile keeping Asin as a pet? πŸ˜‰

Perhaps, that’s reserved for Housefull 3.

You forgot the bit about the python holding on to Shreyas’ dick in a vice-like grip.

    • Hari Jr   April 11, 2012 at 4:18 pm

Ha ha ha ha that too was sheer nonsense

And even that crocodile chomping Riteish’s bum πŸ˜‰

You write: Would you have preferred it the other way, the crocodile keeping Asin as a pet?

Perhaps, that’s reserved for Housefull 3.

Couldn’t stop laughing on reading that πŸ˜›

I heard uncontrollable laughs when that python catches hold of shreyas’ dick πŸ˜‰

Guess people like this kind of comedy nowadays!!

      SearchIndia.com Responds:

Sweetie, the existence of Bollywood is ample evidence that the world has gone to the dogs.

That 1.5 billion (if you include India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal and the diaspora) watch the bilge that flows out of the Bollywood sewers week after week means there’s little hope of redemption and salvation for South Asians.

  5. Hari Jr   April 10, 2012 at 11:20 pm

Yes Mithun was also good πŸ™‚

We wish you the same Sweetie!

SI is my recent discovery ..and what I like is its don’t care attitude in talking the nasty truth..(may be ) storming against popular belief and hype..

I am specially fond of the movie reviews …but seeing any single positive word about Sajid Khan is so frustrating !

Also ‘one hundred crore’ tag is as cheap as it could be for judging a movie ..!

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

By all accounts, Sajid Khan’s last film Himmatwala was a dud.

So that should have lifted your spirits! πŸ˜‰

It certainly lifted mine and I consider it just desserts because Sajid Khan stole the Heyy Babyy story from the Hollywood film Three Men and a Baby.
