Perhaps the best known of legendary director Raj Kapoor's movies, this teenage story caught the imagination of Indians as very few before or since have.

Down on his luck after the debacle of his film Mera Naam Joker, Raj Kapoor went in on for unknown actors for this love story. He picked his young son Rishi Kapoor for the male lead of Raj Nath and fresh face Dimple Kapadia to play the role of Bobby.

The story is simple: Young teenagers Raj, 18 and just back from boarding school, and Bobby, sweet 16 and the daughter of a middleclass fisherman, fall in love.

Raj's father Nath (Pran) vehemently opposes the relationship and even tries to buy off (unsuccesfully) Bobby's father Jack Briganza (Premnath).

All the songs in Bobby are a real delight. Who can forget the melodies of Main Shair To Nahin, Hum Tum, Mujhe Kuch Kehna Hai or Na Mangun Sona Chandi?

Bobby was one of the few Hindi films that had pan-Indian appeal including in the Hindi-hating southern state of Tamil Nadu. It was not uncommon to come across young Tamil lads humming the Hum Tum song in the 1970s. - Copyright SearchIndia.com.
