Fine comedies are rare in the bleak wasteland of Bollywood.

Chup Chup Ke is that exceptional Bollywood comedy that had us laughing till our sides split.

Director Priyadarshan, who delighted audiences with Hera Pheri and Malamal Weekly, has once again hit the ball high over the boundary line.

An engrossing storyline and hilarious dialogs combined with the deft hand of Priyadarshan at the rudder and the solid performance of the talented troika of Paresh Rawal, Rajpal Yadav and Om Puri make Chup Chup Ke a winner all the way.

Under Priyadarshan's keen eye, Chup Chup Ke (a remake of the Malayalam movie Punjabi House) seldom goes adrift. The narrative is fast-paced and rolls along smoothly.

Heavily in debt following the failure of all his business ventures, Jeet (Shahid Kapoor) a decent young fellow, decides to end his life by jumping into the rough seas. But fate casts Jeet into the fishing net of Gundya (Paresh Rawal) and his assistant Bandya (Rajpal Yadav). Like Jeet, Gundya is also in dire straits. He's in debt to Prabhat Singh Chauhan (Om Puri) whos's threatening to take his boat.

Mistakenly believing Jeet to be a millionaire and seeing in him a solution to his financial woes, Gundya pays his hospital expenses and take the young fellow with him. For his part, Jeet decides that the best course of action is to play dumb (and deaf) literally.

Meanwhile, Gundya loses his boat to Prabhat Singh and is forced to leave Jeet and Bandya as guarantee at Prabhat Singh's place until he gets the money to redeem his boat. At Prabhat Singh's place, Jeet's "deaf and dumb" deception is quickly revealed when Prabhat Singh's mute niece Shruti (Kareena Kapoor) and his daughter Meenakshi Singh Chauhan (Neha Dupia) catch him singing in an inebriated condition one night.

Soon, Shruti, who's been jilted at the altar once, loses her heart to Jeet and he reciprocates the affection of the mute girl. After some misunderstandings are resolved, their marriage is settled. But all along Jeet's ex-fiance Pooja (Sushma Reddy) has been pining for him and living with his parents as his widow.

Just as Jeet and Shruti are on the verge of getting married, his ex-fiancee Pooja lands up moments before the ceremony. What does Jeet do now?

Individually, Paresh Rawal and Rajpal Yadav are powerful actors. Together, this dynamic pair brings the house down. Compared to Paresh Rawal and Rajpal Yadav, Shahid Kapoor comes across as a novice.

Kareena Kapoor does not have that big a role. As for Neha Dupia, she's reduced to an even smaller role.

One big letdown of Chup Chup Ke was the mediocre quality of music. None of the songs did anything for us. Moments out of the movie hall, we couldn't recollect a single song. - Copyright SearchIndia.com.
