Seldom is a Hindi movie watchable. Usually, the story line is inane, the songs inspid and the overall effect a lingering migraine.

Hey Ram is an exception.

The payoffs are aplenty in Hey Ram - Kamal Haasan's inspired acting, a nice social theme, and a moving story line.

The movie is set against the backdrop of the partition of India into two countries - India and Pakistan - in 1947 and the brutal communal violence that engulfed many parts of the two countries soon after.

The story revolves around Saketh Ram (Kamal Haasan), an archaeologist traumatized by the brutal gang-rape and murder of his wife Aparna (Rani Mukerji) in the post-Independence riots in Calcutta.

Shah Rukh Khan gives in a strong performance as Kamal Haasan's Muslim friend, who strongly believes in Gandhi's principles.

There are some howlers though like when a pimp in Delhi just after 1947 asks Kamal Haasan whether he's from Karnataka. This is wrong since Karnataka used to be called Mysore until 1973. - Copyright SearchIndia.com.
