Hulchul is yet another sophomoric Bollywood film with a few funny moments as its sole saving grace.

What makes this Bollywood film stand out a little apart from its peers is the quality of its dialogs.

The central thread of Hulchul is the long-standing enemity between the families of Angarchand (Amrish Puri) and Laxmidevi (Lakshmi, the Julie girl of the 1970s).

Drawn into this battle are youngsters Anjali (Kareena Kapoor), granddaughter of Laxmidevi, and Jai (Akshay Khanna), son of Angarchand.

After Anjali's forthcoming marriage is cancelled because of Angarchand's mischief, Laxmidevi instigates Anjali to pretend to fall in love with Jai so that she can sow discord in her enemy's family.

Accordingly, Anjali proceeds to make Jai believe that she's fallen for him. For his part, Jai goes along with the charade because he's got similar designs to insult his father's enemy. However, the pretence love of the young pair soon blossoms into real love.

But the love birds have to navigate through a forest of obstacles before they can reach the safe harbor of marriage. The main obstacles are Angarchand's diktat to his four sons to stay away from women because of a past tragedy in the family and Laxmidevi's visceral hatred of Angarchand's family.

As in most Hindi film, the fight scenes in Hulchul are crude but the songs are above average. Our favorite songs were Ishq Main and Rafta Rafta.

Paresh Rawal is outstanding as Kishan, one of Angarchand's sons. So is Arshad Waris, as Jai's college friend.

Hulchul was one of the last films of Amrish Puri, who died in 2005 after a long career in Bollywood, where he played mostly the villain. - Copyright SearchIndia.com.
