That sequels are never as good as the original is amply proved by Phir Hera Pheri.
If there was never a dull moment in Hera Pheri (released in 2000), the sequel Phir Hera Pheri struggles to move along.
Like its predecessor, Phir Hera Pheri is an all out assault against all notions of common sense but where Hera Pheri kept the laughs coming and coming, Phir Hera Pheri disappoints.
A second rate story (what little story there is), a sagging narrative and weak dialogs combine in Phir Hera Pheri to produce far fewer laughs than the original.
The same troika - Akshay Kumar, Suniel Shetty and Paresh Rawal - that delighted audiences in Hera Pheri make their appearance in Phir Hera Pheri as well but the old magic is sadly missing.
Phir Hera Pheri starts off where Hera Pheri ends. The principal characters Raju (Akshay Kumar), Shyam (Suniel Shetty) and Babubhai (Paresh Rawal), who ended up rich in Hera Pheri, are now living in a grand bungalow.
Soon their greed gets the better of them and they are suckered by a con artist Anuradha (Bipasha Basu), who offers to double their money in 21 days. Both their money and Anuradha disappear quickly.
Having lost their money and house, Raju, Shyam and Babubhai are back in the hovel selling their meagre possessions one by one to survive. But they keep hatching up bizzare get-rich-quick schemes.
There's not much to complain in the acting department. Akshay Kumar, Paresh Rawal and Suniel Shetty play their roles with aplomb. The principal weakness of Phir Hera Pheri is the meandering script itself. Too many meaningless detours disturb the smooth narrative and flow of the movie.
Unlike his predecessor Priyadarshan, Phir Hera Pheri director Neeraj Vohra fails to get the main characters to take on lives of their own.
Bipasha Basu and Rimi Sen don't have much of a role here. As usual, Bipasha Basu seems unable to bring life to her role.
