As Ignatius Reilly would lament, "the gods of chaos, lunacy and bad taste gained ascendancy" in Shaadi Se Pehle.
Fine performances by Akshaye Khanna and the sizzling Mallika Sherawat are the sole saving graces of this sophomoric comedy.
To the doubters who have hitherto not been able to look beyond Mallika Sherawat's you know what, Shaadi Se Pehle proves decisively that the actress has other assets beyond her voluptous figure: the lass can act.
But Akshaye Khanna and Mallika Sherwat are held hostage by the weak story and cannot salvage this film.
Ashish Khanna (Akshaye Khanna) is a hypochondriac ad executive in love with the lissome Rani (Ayesha Takia). Once during a visit to his doctor (Boman Irani), Ashish overhears the doctor talking about a young patient with terminal cancer.
Mistakenly believing that the doctor is talking about him, Ashish decides to renounce his lady love and goes about doing his damndest to get Rani to stay away from him.
His early efforts to make Rani disgusted with him fall flat until he meets Sania (Mallika Sherawat), a supermodel with a voluptous figure to die for. By now, Rani has had enough and dumps Ashish when she sees him in Sania's arms.
Finding Ashish innocent and a refreshing change from her former boyfriends, Sania falls in love with him not realizing that she's just being used.
Unfortunately for Ashish, Sania's brother Anna (Suniel Shetty) is a dreaded gangster, who is now determined to get Ashish married to Sania.
Just as Ashish learns that he doesn't have cancer at all, Rani is about to fall into his friend Rohit's arms.
Ayesha Takia fails to impress as Rani. She doesn't bring the explosive energy that Akshaye Khanna and Mallika Sherawat pack into their roles.
As with action films, comedy requires the audience to suspend disbelief considerably but Shaadi Se Pehle is startlingly unrealistic even for a comedy.
Like Johnny Lever, another good comedian Rajpal Yadav has not got his due from directors. Here, he plays Kanpuri, Ashish's friend and poet.
Suniel Shetty looks and acts silly as Anna, the dreaded Mafia don.
While Shaadi Se Pehle's music is nothing to rave about, Mundeya is one of the passable songs.
