Even by Bollywood's usual sophomoric standards, Tathastu is a fiasco.

From the first frame to the last, Tathastu is a crude, flat work bereft of any aristic element.

Inspired by the Hollywood movie John Q (starring Denzel Washington), Tathastu seeks to address an indifferent bureaucracy and expensive healthcare system that thwart a young man struggling to save his son's life.

Ravi Rajput is a mill foreman, devoted to his wife Saru (Amisha Patel) and a cricket-crazy young son Gaurav (Yash Pathak).

One day Gaurav collapses while playing cricket. The doctors declare that Gaurav needs a heart transplant immediately if he has to have any chance of survival. The catch: a lapsed insurance policy and the obscene cost of the transplant - Rs 15 lakh (Rs 1.5 million).

Despite his best efforts to raise the money for the operation, Ravi comes a cropper. In desperation, he gets a gun and holds 30 patients in the hospital hostage until his son's operation is performed.

Besides a poorly written script, the problem with the movie is that there's no tension. Even in scenes that would seem to require considerable tension as when Sanjay Dutt holds the patients hostage.

The lead pair fails to bring passion into the characters they play. Sanjay Dutt goes about his role in a listless, zombie-like fashion. Like the drug addict that he once was in real life.

As Ravi's wife Saru, Amisha Patel's performance is awful. The lady just can't seem to act. Mercifully, the young lady doesn't have much of a role.

Amisha Patel is like a jonah these days. Amisha's presence means the kiss of death for the movie. Four of her recent movies - Teesri Aankh, Humko Tumse Pyaar Hai, Mere Jeevan Saathi and now Tathastu deservedly sank at the box office without a trace.

All in all, Tathastu is yet another awful Bollywood film headed for the grave of oblivion. - Copyright SearchIndia.com.
