Dharma Durai is your typical crude, garish Tamil film with little to be said in its favor.
This mediocre film recounts the story of an illiterate but good natured peasant Dharma Durai (Rajnikant).
Much to the chagrin of his father, Dharma never says no to the repeated financial demands of his two younger brothers only to see them ultimately turn into evil no-gooders and cause him much grief.
Dharma's boundless affections are not reciprocated by his brothers who consider him an idiotic cash cow that can be easily milked. His father cautions Dharma that his wayward younger sons are nothing but snakes but all the warnings fall on deaf ears.
The guileless Dharma even pledges the family farm to provide seed money to his brothers to set up a business.
Meanwhile, using the money provided by Dharma the brothers turn into successful criminals in the big city.
Dharma's eyes are opened and he realizes the true colors of his brothers when he visits them in the city. At a party, the they insult Dharma because of embarrassment over his rustic behavior. Before he can head back to his village the next morning, one of his brothers commits a murder that night and prevails upon Dharma to take the rap for the crime.
Dharma's cup of woes overfloweth now - He is sentenced to jail for seven years. Soon afterwards, his father dies. And unbeknownst to him, Dharma's young son is killed and his wife forced to become a maid servant to support herself.
After his release from jail, a disillusioned Dharma and his wife settle down in a forest. But his past unexpectedly catches up with them even in that remote spot.
Gowthami is adequate as Parvathi, Dharma's love interest and wife.
The story demands too much credulity of viewers. It's silly to expect in this day and age that people, even illiterate peasants, are as naive as Dharma is portrayed to be.
The fight/action scenes are as crude as they usually get in Tamil films.
The songs are nothing to write home about. Maasi maasam aalaana ponnu sung by Yesudas and Swarnalatha is one of the better songs. - Copyright SearchIndia.com.
