Pachaikili Muthucharam

Reviewer's Summary - Disgustingly Bad

Language: Tamil
Year: February 2007
Actors: Sarath Kumar, Jyotika, Andrea Jeremiah, Milind Soman
Director: Gautham Menon
Music: Harris Jayaraj
Written by: Gautham Menon
Lyrics: Thamarai/ Rohini

Tamil movie fans owe a Big Thanks to Surya.

After all, it's only after his marriage to Jyothika that the lady provided relief to long-suffering Tamil movie fans by bidding adieu to movies.

In Pachaikili Muthucharam, Jyothika has hit the nadir with a performance so pitiful that it raises questions about director Gautham Menon's abilities.

Like that fine Hollywood film Derailed (2005) starring Clive Owen and Jennifer Anniston, Pachaikili Muthucharam is also an adaptation of the James Siegel novel of the same name.

Clive Owen, Jennifer Aniston and Vincent Cassel were the principal characters in Derailed while Sarath Kumar, Jyothika, Milind Soman and Andrea Jeremiah form the dramatis personae in Pachaikili Muthucharam.

Although Jyothika's performance is mediocre throughout Pachaikili Muthucharam, it's eggregiously bad in her final confrontation with Sarath Kumar. The young lady is pathetically unequal to the role.

It's a shame that with a few exceptions, most Tamil heroines are just terrible in the acting department trusting that viewers will focus on their other assets.

Sarath Kumar and Andrea Jeremiah turn in decent performances in Pachaikili Muthucharam as does Milind Soman.

Medical sales representative Venkatesh (Sarath Kumar) and his wife Kalyani (Andrea Jeremiah) are experiencing a little stress in their relationship after their young son is diagnosed with diabetes. During this vulnerable phase of his life, Venkatesh gets close to Geetha (Jyothika), a fellow commuter in the train.

One day just as Venkatesh and Geetha have checked into a hotel for you-know-what, they are attacked by a ruffian Lawrence, who trusses up Venkatesh and rapes Geetha. Soon Lawrence starts blackmailing Venkatesh for money that he's kept aside for his young son.

After his life's savings of Rs eight lakh is gone, Venkatesh makes a terrible discovery about Geetha.

With each new movie, director Gautham Menon seems to be struggling to sustain audience interest in his movies. They start well but quickly run out of gas because of the poor screenplay. If you thought Gautham's previous film Vettaiyadu Villaiyadu was bad, just wait till you see the nightmare that's Pachaikili Muthucharam.

The poor quality of his recent films makes us wonder if the excellent Kaakha Kaakha was an aberration in Gautham Menon's career.

Un Siripinil is one of the better songs in Pachaikili Muthucharam.

Pachaikili Muthucharam is so awful that for the first time ever in the U.S (CinePlaza in North Bergen, NJ) we were witness to restless youngsters in the audience screaming for a quick end to a movie. - Copyright SearchIndia.com.
