As Vallavan demonstrates, Indian film makers' idee fixe with love shows no signs of abating.

In a season when fine Hollywood movies like The Devil Wears Prada, Borat and Pursuit of Happyness with novel storylines are hitting the big screen, Indian movie afficionados are forced to sit through movie after movie where love occupies centerstage to the exclusion of all else.

Featuring "Little Super Star" T.R.Silambarasan a.k.a Simbu, Vallavan is the story of a college student Vallavan (Simbu) who falls in love with a girl Swapna (Nayantara), three years older than him.

To win the object of his affections, who is a lecturer in the same college where he's a student, Vallavan dons a disguise, wearing protruding teeth and glasses. Although initially irritated with the awkward character, Swapna eventually falls for him.

However, when Swapna gets to know of Vallavan's duplicity, she breaks off the relationship uneasy that Vallavan is younger than her.

As Vallavan's relationship with Swapna is on the rocks, the audience gets to know in flashback about Vallavan's schooldays romance with Geeta (Reema Sen). But Vallavan's obsession with Geeta comes across as more morbid than love.

Sandhya, who delighted audiences with her fine performance in Dishyum, has such an insignificant role in Vallavan that it left us scratching our heads as to what led her to sign up for this movie. Was it a case of desperation?

Nayantara does a decent job as does Reema Sen. It's of course a big stretch to see Simbhu, Reema Sen and Sandhya masquerading as school students.

Vallavan's weakness is its unidimensional focus on love. Surely, there's more to life than love. But Simbhu seems blissfully unaware of life beyond the citadel of love as he gallivants around his lady loves.

Music is a highlight of Vallavan.

Besides the title song Vallava Enna, Loosu Penne and Yemmadi Athadi are two other songs set to fine tunes. Our favorite was Vallava Ena, a treat for the ears. In their short skirts, both Nayantara and Reema Sen look cute in the Yemmadi Athadi song-dance.

Kadhal Vanthiruchu is a repeat of the famous song from the old Kamal Haasan film Kalyanaraman.- Copyright SearchIndia.com
