Agra Fort, Agra

Mughal Emperor Akbar in 1565 designed and built this red sandstone monument, which was subsequently extended by his grandson Shah Jahan.

Agra Fort is enclosed by a massive red sandstone wall of roughly 2 km in perimeter. The fort originally had four gates, two of which were walled up later. The remaining two gates are Delhi Gate and Amar Singh Gate. Delhi Gate consisting of massive octagonal towers lies on the west and leads to the Jama Masjid in Agra city. Amar Sing Gate faces south and is flanked by round towers and a crooked entrance with dangerous trap points.

Agra Fort comprises of several beautiful palaces and halls like Jahangiri palace, Jodha Bai's palace, Anguri Bagh, Khas Mahal, Musamman Burj, Diwan-i-Khas, Diwan-i-Am, Sheesh Mahal, Hammam-i-Shahi, Machchhi Bhawan. The fort also has a few mosques - Nagina Masjid, Mina Masjid and Moti Masjid.

Agra Fort is also known as Red Fort of Agra.
