Born on March 1, 1951 in Bakhtiarpur to late Mr. Kaviraj Ram Lakhan Singh and the late Mrs. Parmeshwari Devi, Nitish Kumar holds a Bachelor's degree in civil engineering from the Bihar College of Engineering in Patna.

Nitish Kumar participated in JP's movement against Indira Gandhi between 1974-1977 and was arrested under the dreaded Maintenance of Internal Security Act (MISA).
