NRI or Non Resident Indian is a term that refers to the Indian diaspora.

Indians have been migrating out of India for centuries. The Romas or gypsies of Europe originally hailed from India.

In the U.S. alone, there are over two million people of Indian origin.

It's fairly common sight to see these people even in smaller U.S. cities and towns. While some of them are professionals - doctors, engineers, nurses and software programmers - many others are businessmen running motels, gas stations, convenience stores, IT start-ups, Dunkin Donut or Subway franchises.
