Profiles of Indian Political Leaders
M.K. Stalin
(Date of Birth - March 1, 1953)

Stalin is the youngest son of DMK party leader and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Muthuvel Karunanidhi.

Named after the Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin, Karunanidhi's son M.K.Stalin was born in Chennai on March 1, 1953.

After his election to the State Legislative Assembly for a fourth term in May 2007, Stalin was named Minister for Local Administration in his father Karunanidhi's cabinet.

Stalin was elected to the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly in 1989, 1996, 2001 and 2007. He represents the Thousand Lights constituency in Chennai.

Stalin has also been Mayor of Chennai from 1996-2001.

However, after his father's bitter political enemy Jayaram Jayalalitha became Tamil Nadu Chief Minister in 2001, things started getting difficult for Stalin who was both Chennai Mayor and a member of the Legislative Assembly at the time.

The Tamil Nadu government passed the "One-man one-post" law and Stalin lost the powerful position of Chennai Mayor in June 2002.

Stalin, who is also Secretary of the DMK's Youth Wing, is seen as Karunanidhi's political heir. This has led to some criticism that Karunanidhi is fostering dynastic succession such as that exists in other political families, notably the Nehru-Gandhi family.

Despite being in the political arena for two decades, Stalin has so far done little to distinguish himself above the crowd. It's doubtful if this mediocre personality would have risen this far in the DMK hierarchy were he not Karunanidhi's son.

The road to the top of the DMK is unlikely to be smooth for Stalin. Besides his brothers M.K.Muthu and M.K.Azhagiri, Stalin also has to contend with another rival in the form of Dayanidhi Maran, Karunanidhi's grand-nephew.

Stalin is married and has two children.
