On Monday, Intel plans to release new 45 nanometer chips made from Hafnium – in stead of the old silicon dioxide – in an effort to cut power consumption and boost processor speed, according to the WSJ (subscription required).

Besides a $999 quad-core model for high-end PCs called the Core 2 Extreme QX9650, Intel plans to roll out 15 Xeon models for servers. With clock speeds of up to 3.4 gigahertz, the new processors are priced from $177 to $1,279.
