Guys, here comes the third instalment of Amazing America.

You think folks here are any less weirder than back home in India. No way.

* Los Angeles county spent about $13,000 to pursue a $1,004 debt owed by a grandma living on social security. No kidding. Read this L.A.Times story.

* A few weeks back, a California court handed out a life sentence to Ali Foroutan for possession of 0.03 gram of methamphetamine. No typo. That is 0.03 gram of meth.

Why the heavy sentence for possession of such a tiny amount of meth? Continue reading »

Is there anyone out there who has yet to watch Slumdog Millionaire, the non-Bollywood made-in-India masterpiece?

OK, maybe you live in Siberia or Antarctica.

Not to worry.

The eight-Oscar winner is coming to Blu-ray and regular DVD on March 31 at disgustingly high prices.

The Blu-ray version costs $40 and the DVD version $30.

This is an American tragedy.

A new study by the Pew Center has found that 7.32 million American adults were in prison, on parole or on probation in 2007, a tripling over the last 25 years.

Folks, that makes it 1 in every 31 American adults in prison, on parole or on probation. For Blacks, the numbers are a depressing 1 in 11.

If you take the prison and jail population alone, the incarcerated population in America is 2.3 million.  That is, 1 in 100 Americans is behind closed doors.

In our view, these are some of the key reasons for the explosive growth of people in prison, on parole or probation in America:

* Growth of the prison-industrial complex or private companies running prisons
* Demand from the people for stiff sentencing laws after media reports of horrific crimes
* Harsh sentencing laws like California’s Three-strikes law that leave little leeway for judges
* Racism that causes Blacks to go to prison for long durations for minor crimes
* Lack of spending on rehabilitation programs
* High rate of recidivsm

According to Pew, in the past two decades, state general fund spending on corrections has increased by over 300%, outpacing other essential Continue reading »

We are finally getting around to watching Mithya.

This movie has been recommended by many readers of the SearchIndia.com blog.

Directed by Rajat Kapoor, Mithya features Ranvir Shorey, Neha Dhupia, Naseeruddin Shah, Saurabh Shukla and Manu Rishi.

We’ll update this post after we finish the movie.

Update (after watching the movie):

Mithya is a decent movie and Ranvir Shorey delivers a decent performance as an aspiring actor caught up in a whirlpool of circumstances outside his control.

But the story of an everyday lookalike guy replacing a dreaded gangster Continue reading »

Our favorite set-top box Roku got better today.

Amazon Video on Demand has come to Roku, which means we can rent or buy 40,000 movies/TV programs online from Amazon.com and watch it on our television set via streaming through a high-speed Internet connection.

We just checked our $99 Roku box but didn’t find the box updated yet to access Amazon Video on Demand. Roku says that over the course of the next week, current Roku customers will get the free software update.

The first movie we plan to watch on Roku-Amazon is a Hebrew movie – Bonjour Monsieur Shlomi.

Roku already lets us stream movies from Netflix.
