Ayan at U.K. Box Office – Ayyo, Embarrassing

These are hard times for Sori Padam Surya.

Close on the heels of a ho hum reception for Surya’s Vaaranam Aayiram comes a poor response to his latest crap show Ayan.

Ayan, a most crappy movie, grossed a pathetic £37,771 in its opening weekend at the UK box office.

On an average gross basis, Ayan did worse than even Vishal’s piece of junk a.k.a. Sathyam. And that is so disgraceful considering Surya’s stature.

This box office day of reckoning is inevitable when a Kollywood star repeatedly taunts the audience with poor performances, poor stories and poor music. Sooner rather than later, the fed-up audience turns round and shows the middle finger to the star.

Surya is not the only one. We’ve seen it happening to Vijay, Ajith and Vishal too.

Given the high ticket prices, ’tis time Kollywood got its act together and started delivering quality movies.

Where is Villu in this list?

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

With Villu, we don’t have the 3-day weekend numbers because we believe it was released earlier.

So comparisons become difficult with other movies.

In any case, if you go by media reports Villu hardly set the box office on fire.

i dint like it as well, agreeing to ur review for once 🙂 it is not even worth that 37K pounds it has made. Shud have been just 37 pounds….

  3. kaleshgopi   April 10, 2009 at 2:27 pm

ayan is not a good movie, it is having poor collections in US, but it is declared as a hit in TNadu, in the long run it will get enough collection to be a hit.

As we all seen earlier the film vel had an outdated story, bad music etc. it is the no.1 grosser in surya’s entire career, don’t decide the success, that is the business done by a film, by the collection in the US

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

You write: but it is declared as a hit in TNadu

What is your source? Please provide some credible links.

check out Behindwoods and other website reviews ….movie is decent …doing well …second half could have been better ….

Collections in India being published ? – Maybe – but I have not come across such a thing ….

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

One of our friends went to the movie on Saturday in Edison (NJ). He mentioned there was a decent crowd for the 3:40 show and that the 7PM show was sold out. Apparently, Ayan director K.V. Anand was around for the 7PM show.

Hmmm. Thats bad response for a thriller like Ayan…

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

    Ayan, a thriller? Au contraire, it’s a thrill-killer.

Maybe you saw the previews (trailers) of State of Play or Quantum of Solace and in your frazzled state, you mistook Russell Crowe or Daniel Craig for Surya.

Ayan is an amateurish piece of shit.

  6. shadowfax_arbit   April 19, 2009 at 11:50 am

Hey let me explain. Thriller in the sense, songs ellam dhidir dhidhirnu varum (all the songs come unexpectedly and suddenly)

  7. manishankar   April 19, 2009 at 12:41 pm

I agree with your opinion & reviews.

I think good time & luck is not with SURYA this time.

I WILL pray to god for SURYA’s STARDOM, if he continues to do such films.

The film is moving just like that. The film does not have any mind blowing/surprising scenes in it.Everything is copied or presented in different mode
I am sure that if anyone watches this film, he/she will be greatly disappointed regarding SURYA’s acting.

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

You write: I think good time & luck is not with SURYA this time.

You are speaking like our Chettiar friend who used to blame “Time” for all his woes.

  8. kelambu_kaathu   April 19, 2009 at 2:09 pm

I’m a chettiar. U started provoking caste issues also?

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

    You write: I’m a chettiar.

Who cares whether you are a Chettiar or Ambattar.

We’re talking of our old 24 Mani Chettiar friend not you. We had no clue that you were a Chettiar.

Just out of curiosity, what percent interest would you charge if we were to ask you for a loan? 😉

  9. Aswin_Kini   April 20, 2009 at 6:02 am

Well buddy, I have not watched the movie yet, but I am sure it’s not that worst. Anyways, have you watched the following films:
    1)Yevano Oruvan
    2)Thambi
These are some of the best films Madhavan has acted in. Both of them have social messages, the former is so good. YOu must try watching these films.

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

    No, we haven’t watched both.

We’ll try to see them when they come out on DVD.

  10. Aswin_Kini   April 21, 2009 at 1:43 am

Hope Suriya learns from his mistakes and picks up good roles to do. By the way, where is that godzilla of an actor called Vikram? Has he disappeared, is he extinct now? I am disappointed to not even see one of his films released for the past one year. Maybe good actors in Tamilnadu have stopped acting!

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

You write: where is that godzilla of an actor called Vikram? Has he disappeared, is he extinct now

    Samy, don’t worry.

Kanthasamy (featuring Anniyan-Vikram and that Delhi babe Shriya Saran) is coming soon.

  11. Aswin_Kini   April 21, 2009 at 2:20 pm

Hope Kanthasamy doesn’t end up like BHEEMA! We have had enough movies flopping at the box office. I would really love to see a DHILL/DHOOL/SAAMY type of movie that would lift my sagging spirits. Saamy, I believe, is one of the best MASALA movies that was evermade!

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

    When is Kanthasamy releasing?

Madhavan’s Guru En Aalu is releasing this weekend here. Will skip it. We watched the Hindi version Yes Boss (Shahrukh Khan, Juhi Chawla) in late December or early January. Total garbage.

Only in India, we guess people make remakes of garbage films. 🙁

Sh*t I never expected this when all I hear from ppl is that the movie is pathetic
    http://sify.com/entertainment/movies/tamil/boxoffice/fullstory.php?id=14882531

Either Sify is posting wrong stats, or ppl go watch and then regret (thanks to Sun publicity), or ppl just liked the movie (which I cant imagine)….

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

    We don’t believe it either.

  13. shadowfax_arbit   April 22, 2009 at 4:50 am

Kandasamy has been in the status of ‘coming soon’ for the past 2 yrs 🙁
I want to see it soon to forget this Ayan.

I hated Ayan to the core. 2 minutes after the start, I realized that this was not worth the multiplex. The songs and their timing made me puke. That twist would have been an actual twist if it din happen. The villain was some garbage-pick. Not a single scene I was into the movie except for Tamanna’s intro. But soon she also slipped off completely in providing any relief, worsening things with those unexpected songs and horrible acting. Plain-crap and with all Sun TV publicity it seems to be doing well. Shocking! When Sun TV could make Dindugal Sarathy a decent hit with its publicity no wonder this is also doing good. DS was the worst sh*t ever made in film industry. When would ppl stop trusting Sun TV??

Vikram is acting godzilla yeah, atleast he wont choose such garbage. Bheema was 100 times better than this though it was a flop. Even I want to see his movie soon for a change from all these bad ones, and this garbage particularly….

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

Loose Paiya and family control the govt, control the movies and other entertainment Tamils can see on TV, control the box office response for crappy movies by repeated advertisements, control the news and ultimately control the entire Tamil population completely.

    Heil Loose Paiya.

  14. Aswin_Kini   April 22, 2009 at 11:10 am

Heard that Kandhasamy will be released here either on September 23rd, but not yet confirmed. I donno why there is such a huge delay. This reminds me of a Vadivelu comedy in which a man replies to Vadivelu “VARUM AANA VARATHU”.

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

Funny. We have a friend in New Jersey who seems to think life has meaning only because of the existence of Vadivelu and Vivek.

Vikram is starring in Ravana as Ravana, Prithviraj as Rama and Seetha is Ash. Priyamani is Ravanas sister.. Ravana is the hero in this movie… Awaiting the movie
    http://www.teluguden.com/newsdetails.asp?articleid=3178

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

    1. You write: Ravana is the hero in this movie…

    Hardly surprising.

That’s the way life has always been in India. Ravan, Kamsa, Duryodhana and Dushasana are the India heroes, worshipped, looked up to, followed and emulated by millions of Indians.

Only in Amar Chitra Katha comics are Ravan and Kamsa villains but in real life, they are the real heroes of India. Just look around you.

Rama became ‘Rama’ only for a short while (in Sri Lanka to rescue his babe).

After that Rama turned into Ravan by tacitly forcing Sita to engage in that bizarrely brutal Agni Pariksha ritual and followed up on such ‘humane’ behavior by subsequently abandoning Sita after hearing some gossip that Sita may have slept with Ravan.

    2. You write: Seetha is Ash

Aishwarya Rai is a bad actress. We’d have preferred a more talented actress like Padmapriya, Meera Jasmine or Vimala Raman for the role. Unfortunately, we’re not the producer of Ravan. Sob, sob.

    3. We forget to add this in our previous response to one of your earlier comments – Bhoomika is an infinitely superior actress compared to this Trisha pisachi. Bhoomika lights up the screen with her presence in a way that Trisha never can. This Trisha creature makes you want to throw up and demand a refund.

  16. shadowfax_arbit   April 24, 2009 at 10:34 am

Whatever you wrote about Rama/Ravana didn’t make any sense to me. Were you high when you wrote that?

Bhoomika is not great, only she looks good. Yeah I like Padmapriya for her amazing acting, and Meera Jasmine is simply too cute in looks and acting but too short. I dont know who is Vimala Raman.

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

    1. You write above: Whatever you wrote about Rama/Ravana didn’t make any sense to me

We went off on a tangent from Reel Life to Real Life.

    2. Vimala Raman is one of the heroines in Raman Thediya Seethai (Cheran).

A pretty Tamil babe from down under, Vimala is also a decent actress, at least by Kollywood standards.

  17. ramais_44   May 9, 2009 at 1:47 am

    Dear SI,

I never miss any of your movie reviews.Since this is my first post, i wish to say a big thanks for reviewing Tamil flicks. Some movies like Billa, villu, kuruvi, Dasa, deserved a worse treatment. Particularly i enjoyed the Billa review and you said he is a Korangu. No,he is a Thaala korangu.

All these star bound movies are for people who enter cinema hall to adjust the balls.Drecksacks!!

Okey, forgive the bad shits. Have you watched subramaniapuram, just released PASANGA, chennai 600028, anjathey etc. These movies had nativity, new faces, no super heroism, decent music and better actors.Wish to see your reviews on some these movies.

    Tks….

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

Have not seen the movies you refer to. They did not make it to the East Coast of the U.S. We doubt if Pasanga made it even to Bay Area.

Hopefully, they should make it to Netflix soon, at which point we’ll definitely see them.

finally news has come that kanthaswamy is gonna release on aug 15th , so i will be waiting for ur review (plz don’t damage more as i am a vivid fan of vikram) on 16th or 17th august …

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

    We like Vikram too.

  20. arshadsod   August 4, 2009 at 9:30 am

just gone through ur reviews on billa, villu, aegan and kuruvi, satyam , from that one thing is sure that u don’t like a separate comedy track that comes in between scenes and also u don’t like fights in which actor just flies or jumps here and there .From this i am pretty sure u are gonna write the same review for kanthaswamy (as a pathetic piece of shit ) because even in kanthaswamy there are separate comedy tracks involving vadivelu and also there are lot of fights which are involving helicopters and the hero jumping and flying .

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

Comedy tracks ought to be integrated with the main story and not stand out like a sore thumb.

Fights in movies should resemble humans fighting each other not chimps going at each other.

  21. arshadsod   August 5, 2009 at 12:08 pm

hi SI , first of all i request u to don’t process the following comments in this blog , do u have time to listen to tamil songs ? did u listen to kanthaswamy songs ? if yes , then did u like it ? i like 2 songs in kanthaswamy “excuse me mr kanthaswamy ” and “ithellam dupe” song , kindly reply to this query to my email [deleted] ……. plzzzzzz

    with love,
    arshad

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

    1. You write: with love, arshad

Since when did you become our inamorata or vice versa. 😉

    2. We’ve listened to the two songs you mention above a few times.

Remains to be seen how they are picturized in the movie.

Shriya Saran is a very mediocre actress, who, given past history, is banking on the drooling audience being engrossed in her skimpy attire and physical attributes to pay attention to her lack of any acting talent.

    3. BTW, we prefer all interaction to happen through the SI blog, not outside this forum.

  22. Albert Camus   August 5, 2009 at 2:03 pm

Vikram has most of the songs himself in this movie.

I watched a movie called Poo yesterday.. better than most other Tamil movies (including Kancheepuram) I watched recently.. from the director of Dishyum, which you seem to have liked very much. You’ll probably like the heroine (mallu again, I think) too.. dusky type like Padmapriya, but prettier . Very powerful role.. at times she looks overwhelmed, but charming most of the time.. it has an important message, but I don’t think it will ever reach the people for whom the message is meant to be. Cinematography was fabulous.. Songs are good. The director probably was too proud of all his creativity.. he didn’t want to edit the movie.. could have been an excellent movie, if it were 30-45 minutes shorter.

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

Listened to some of the Kanthasamy songs again.

Parvati Menon is alright but among the Mallu gals we prefer Bhavana, Sandhya, Navya Nair, Meera Jasmine and Padmapriya, in no particular order.

Unfortunately, Netflix still doesn’t have Poo. The only Parvati Menon flick at Netflix is a 2006 Malayalam film called Notebook.

  23. Albert Camus   August 5, 2009 at 2:21 pm

arshad, why so shy? SI, congratulations on your newfound love!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parvathi_Menon looks like another Mallu has invaded Tamilnadu.. aren’t there any good actresses in TN!

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

You write: aren’t there any good actresses in TN!

    Yes, there are. There are.

  24. arshadsod   August 7, 2009 at 2:46 am

ayan was a decent movie and it is good compared with hi searlier vaaranam aayiram . only the songs and the dance were pathetic in ayan

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

    Rubbish.

  25. arshadsod   August 8, 2009 at 3:42 am

Folks latest news abt kanthaswamy is the release has been postponed for a week . it will release on aug 21st all over the world .these signs are not good for a film , they are delaying the release every week .the same happenned to bheema also

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

Maybe, the Kanthaswamy people should wait for Enthiran (Rajnikanth, Aishwarya Rai), Vettaikaran (Vijay, Anushka) and Asal (Ajith) to be released first.

  26. arshadsod   August 8, 2009 at 11:46 pm

SI, plz review Pithamagan, Sethu, nandha ,these films are very good and i hope u too like it , so plz review it .

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

In your list, we’ve seen Nandha (pre-SI blog review).

We’ll watch Pithamagan and Sethu, if we can lay our hands on them here.

  27. arshadsod   August 9, 2009 at 12:36 am

And try to review Ajith’s CITIZEN , it was somehow his best tamil movie till now …….

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

Nagma as a CBI agent. Scary thought.

As an actress, Nagma is infinitely worse than her younger sister Jyotika.

You’ve no idea how grateful we are to Surya for removing Jyotika from the acting universe. 😉

  28. boopalanj   August 9, 2009 at 12:01 pm

I’m uncomfortable with watching bala movies. They have a sick feeling (or I don’t know what) which reflect in each and every scene of the movie. May be, I feel that way.

How did you feel with Nandha? 😉

Citizen, hmmm.. I wish Ajith and the director were real-citizens of the lost Athipatti.. 😀

i just wanted to say that i remember when Ayan was released in the UK, there were many SriLankan Tamil protests, and as you know 98% of UK tamils are from Sri lanka, including many of my tamil friends, so what i am saying is that during those protests, not many people would have gone to the cinema and watched films…
im sure that if it was released 2-3 months later it would have done better than those trash kuruvi and bheema, cuz personally i thought ayan was better than bheema, kuruvi, kuselan, dasaavatharam….

    SearchIndia.com Responds:

Ayan is a Rahukalam padam (trash).

Wouldn’t have made an iota of difference.
