Long years ago, when the summer heat beat far less fiercely than it does these punishing days on our bent backs, we discovered Henry Miller.

A wily, dark, amoral character and semi-friend, then doing MBA at a two-bit institute of management on the West Coast (in India) and now living on the West Coast (U.S.), visited us at our hovel one morning and began babbling about Henry Miller, Anaïs Nin and Miller’s various books including Tropic of Cancer and Tropic of Capricorn.

Our appetite whetted, we set off on a Millerian orgy quickly devoring that trilogy Sexus, Nexus and Plexus and other books in a frenzy interrupted only by a stupid Iris Murdoch book (was it Nuns and Soldiers?) borrowed from the British Library.

So today when a sarcastic little desi twit on the SI blog sniggered that we most likely had yet to watch Quentin Tarantino’s Henry & June, we lazily headed to Wiki.

Lo and behold, what should we find. The Henry in Henry & June is none other than our old acquaintance Henry Miller.

Our nostalgian neurons triggered, we made haste to the local library this evening and borrowed Tropic of Capricon and Crazy Cock.

Anon we returned and buried our head into Tropic of Capricorn.

The book affords us as much delight today as it did in that long ago Indian summer.

Here’s an excerpt from Tropic of Capricorn:

I can think of no street in America,  or of people inhabiting such a street, capable of leading one on toward the discovery of the self.  I have walked the streets in many countries of the world but nowhere have I felt so degraded and humiliated as in America. Continue reading »

Kaminey is not Pulp Fiction. In more ways than one.

Since some SI readers have repeatedly brought up Pulp Fiction as the progenitor for Kaminey, we went over to Blockbuster on Sunday and rented the 1994 Quentin Tarantino film (Dr.UnkHaf D. Aktar, we’ve added $2.54 to your account).

Having watched Pulp Fiction, our verdict is that Kaminey is not a lift of Pulp Fiction.

While that is to Kaminey director Vishal Bharadwaj’s credit, neither is the recent Bollywood film as good as the 15-year Tarantino flick.

BTW, a piece in the Sunday New York Times said Pulp Fiction grossed over $200 million and cost just $9 million to make.

Pulp Fiction bristles with energy, crackles with intense dialogs and dazzles with solid performances.

For instance, Captain Koons telling little Butch with a solemn face:

The way your dad looked at it, this watch was your birthright. He’d be damned if any slopes gonna put their greasy yellow hands on his boy’s birthright, so he hid it, in the one place he knew he could hide something: his ass. Five long years, he wore this watch up his ass. Then when he died of dysentery, he gave me the watch. I hid this uncomfortable piece of metal up my ass for two years. Then, after seven years, I was sent home to my family. And now, little man, I give the watch to you.

Or this exchange between the big balding black Marsellus (Ving Rhames) and Butch (Bruce Willis) after Butch rescues Marsellus as he’s being raped by Zed:

Butch: You okay?
Marsellus: Naw man. I’m pretty fuckin’ far from okay.
Butch: What now?
Marsellus: What now? Let me tell you what now. I’ma call a coupla hard, pipe-hittin’ niggers, who’ll go to work on the homes here with a pair of pliers and a blow torch. You hear me talkin’, hillbilly boy? I ain’t through with you by a damn sight. I’m a get medieval on your ass.
Butch: I meant what now between me and you?
Marsellus: Oh, that what now. I tell you what now between me and you. There is no me and you. Not no more.

Or the back-and-forth between Jules (Samuel Jackson) and Vincent (John Travolta). Here’s one example: Continue reading »

Vishal Bharadwaj’s Kaminey (Shahid Kapoor) has turned in a respectable show at the U.S. box office.

The fast-paced, decent thriller came in at No-20 and grossed $726,834 in its opening weekend (August 14-16, 2009) at the US. box office.

The movie, which opened in 82 theatres here, had an average gross of $8,864, according to boxofficemojo.

Kaminey’s average gross was higher than that of Akshay Kumar’s latest piece of trash Kambhakkht Ishq ($7,685).

Shahid Kapoor should be happy because his previous film Kismat Konnection had a poor opening in the U.S.

Take a deko at how Kaminey has fared compared to other prominent Bollywood films.

By the way, Life Partner featuring that fat shit Govinda, the non-actor Fardeen Khan and Genelia D’Souza is a complete disaster.

Kanthaswamy Review – Total Garbage

Tamil movie Kanthaswamy featuring Vikram, Shriya, Krishna, Santhanam, Ashish Vidyarthi, Prabhu Ganesan is releasing in the U.S. on August 21, 2009.

Susi Ganesan is the director.

Vikram’s last movie Bheema was a pathetic piece of shit. Back in 2008 while reviewing Bheema, SearchIndia.com wrote:

Barring Prakash Raj to some extent, none of the other actors distinguish themselves in Bheema. Not even Vikram, who is an actor of high calibre as ably demonstrated by his exemplary performance in Anniyan a few years back.

Shriya Saran’s last movie The Other End of the Line was a crappy Mills & Boone-ish film and a disaster at box office.

Let us hope that Kanthaswamy will not be as dissappointing as Vikram’s Bheema or Shriya’s The Other End of the Line.

Here are the showtimes for Kanthaswamy in some major cities of U.S.:
