Quote of the Day – Theodore Roosevelt

No triumph of peace is quite as great as the supreme triumph of war.
– Theodore Roosevelt cited in The Selected Essays of Gore Vidal (edited by Jay Parini) p.368

By the way, there’s a nice interview with Gore Vidal in The Atlantic.

    Nice quote!

There’s a similar line in Vol 1 of Edward Gibbon’s magnum op The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire. It’s in the first chapter.

As long as mankind shall continue to bestow more liberal applause on their destroyers than on their benefactors, the thirst of military glory will ever be the vice of the most exalted characters.

Gibbon wrote the above about the Emperor Trajan.
