Paa Sinking, Sinking, Sinking

Paa Fails in UK Too; Is Paa Really Doing Well in India?

“Fifteen men on the dead man’s chest–
…Yo-ho-ho, and a bottle of rum!
Drink and the devil had done for the rest–
…Yo-ho-ho, and a bottle of rum”

Boy, it’s hard not to feel a certain degree of schadenfreude over Amitabh Bachchan’s shame tonight.

Serves the old geezer right.

The old man has made a habit of profiting from theft – Hum Kisise Kum Nahin (Analyze This), Ek Ajnabee (Man on Fire), God Tussi Great Ho (Bruce Almighty) et al.

And tonight is judgment night for the wig-wallah.

Folks, Amitabh Bachchan’s Paa is a monumental disaster at the U.S. box office rivaled only by his spawn Abhishek Bachchan’s Drona.

What an irony!

Bada Bachchan’s failure matched only by the Chota Bachchan’s failure.

Ha ha ha.

Excuse us for a moment will you while we pour ourselves a drink.

(Pause: The sounds of a bottle opening and ice cubes dropped in a glass).

We’re back, guys. With a drink in our hands and a million dollar smile on our lips. :)

Monumental Disaster
In its opening weekend at the U.S. box office (December 4-6, 2009), Paa has suffered an overwhelming rejection by the wise desis of America.

God, how do we even tell you the gross numbers? So embarrassing.

The piece of junk grossed a mere $199,228. So gross, na?

Imagine, with all the hype and the presence of the two Bachchans in the film, the 67-year-old Amitabh Bachchan couldn’t even manage $200,000 for the opening weekend.

A Shakespearean tragedy, no less. Lear, redux.

Paa opened in 67 theaters in the U.S, came in at No-24 and had an average gross of a mere $2,974.

Here’s how Paa has fared at the U.S. box office compared to a few other prominent Bollywood films:

Are We Surprised?
Of course not.

Unlike many of the gushing readers of this fine blog we never felt any enthusiasm for this movie. Continue reading »

Pakistani American David Coleman Headley a.k.a Daood Gilani was charged by the U.S. Justice Department today in the Mumbai terrorist attacks last year that killed over 170 people and injured several hundred.

Six Americans were among those killed in the Mumbai attacks.

U.S. Justice Department officials said David Headley attended training camps of the Pakistan-based terrorist outfit Lashkar e Tayyiba (which has been fomenting violence in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir) and allegedly conspired with its members to  carry out the deadly attack in Mumbai in November 2008.

According to legal documents filed by the Justice Department today at the U.S. District Court in the Northern District of Illinois (Eastern Division), David Headley made five extended trips to India (in 2006, 2007 and 2008) before the Mumbai terror attacks to conduct extensive surveillance.

During his trips to India, Headley allegedly took pictures and made videotapes of various Mumbai targets including the Taj Mahal hotel, the Oberoi hotel, the Leopold Café, the Nariman House, and the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus train station as well as other places of public use, state and government facilities, public transportation systems and infrastructure facilities.

Music, as we’ve said often, is the solace of our autumn years.

Here are some of the songs we’ve purchased from Apple iTunes over the last few months:

* Dil to Pagal Hai, Dil Diwana Hai (Hindi) – Yes, one of our favorite songs from the Akshay Kumar, Sharukh Khan, Madhuri Dixit film Dil to Pagal Hai.

As we wrote a few years back:

Like with most Bollywood blockbusters, fine music contributed to Dil To Pagal Hai’s success. The songs are a delight. Our favorites were Are Re Are, Koi Ladki Hai, Dil To Pagal Hai and Le Gayi Le Gayi.

* Ae Bhai Zara Daek Ke Chalo (Hindi) – This one is from Raj Kapoor’s most famous flop Mera Naam Joker.

The singer is Manna Dey. A lovely number that we first heard several decades back. By the way, we recollect the movie having two intervals.

* Tom Sawyer – From the Canadian band Rush.

A modern day warrior
Mean mean stride,
Today’s Tom Sawyer
Mean mean pride.

Though his mind is not for rent
Don’t put him down as arrogant
His reserve, a quiet …..

* Naalai Namathe (Tamil) – From the eponymous Tamil film (a remake of the Hindi blockbuster Yaadon Ki Baraat). Continue reading »

Ha ha ha.

Even the Hindu Gods in America are falling victim to foreclosure and their ‘Commander’ is helpless to help them.

The Hindu Temple of Georgia, which has been in the eye of a storm for its liberal meat and alcohol policies, was sold in a foreclosure auction the other day after failing to repay a bank loan.

The identity of the buyer is not known.

Now the sole hope for the homeless Atlanta Hindu Gods Shiva, Balaji et al lies in the buyer being a devout Hindu.

Commander’s Brainchild
The Hindu Temple of Georgia is the brainchild of Commander Selvam.

No, Selvam is not some elite Black Cat commando. Just an ex-member of the Indian Home Guards, where he was supposedly the first youngest Area Commander for Home Guards in Chennai City, Tamilnadu, India. Continue reading »
