Schmucks, are you surprised?

Really, is any one at all surprised that Avatar won the Visual Effects Oscar. Except perhaps the Kollywood clowns who probably ‘think’ Aayirathil Oruvan should have been in the list.

Describing Avatar as a visual tour de force, SearchIndia.com wrote in the review of the film:

Avatar is the most visually gorgeous movie we’ve seen in our life.

A stunningly beautiful riot of colors in 3D, Avatar is a must-not-miss film for all movie buffs.

Folks, Avatar is the first 3D movie that really brings home the magic of the technology to awe you.

Every other 3D movie we’ve seen before is an impostor in comparison.

We watched Avatar in a movie hall on the East Coast that uses DLP technology from Texas Instruments (unfortunately, the nearest IMAX theater is over 150 miles round-trip).

Here are Avatar’s effete rivals:

District 9 (2009): Dan Kaufman, Peter Muyzers, Robert Habros, Matt Aitken

Star Trek (2009): Roger Guyett, Russell Earl, Paul Kavanagh, Burt Dalton

At the 82nd Oscars tonight, Mo’Nique won the Best Supporting Actress award for her performance in Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire.

We watched the trailer of Precious several times but never got around to watching the movie itself.

Here were the other contenders:

Vera Farmiga for Up in the Air (2009/I)

Penélope Cruz for Nine (2009)

Maggie Gyllenhaal for Crazy Heart (2009)

Mighty Disappointed that Inglourious Basterds failed to make it tonight.

Hurt Locker won the Best Original Screenplay award tonight.

Here’s an excerpt from SearchIndia.com’s review of Hurt Locker:

Make no mistake, schmucks.

The Hurt Locker is not a bad movie.

Actually, it’s a fairly decent movie that has you in its grip for the better part of its playing time.

But it’s just not a film that merits extraordinary encomiums.

Filmed (in Jordan) in the wake of George W.Bush’s unpopular and ill-fated attack on Iraq, Hurt Locker follows a group of ordnance/bomb disposal squad members of the U.S. Army posted in Iraq.

These are the dog days of the war, unlike the present-day, relatively more stable and less violent Iraq.

Life’s hard for the U.S. soldiers in the dusty environs of a hostile country and the clear and present danger.

For these unfortunate ‘trailer trash’ cannon fodder, both black and white, death is a constant companion from the below-ground IEDs, above-ground snipers, on-ground suicide bombers, ambushes and other horrific attacks from a deeply resentful populace.

And the other nominees were:

Inglourious Basterds (2009): Quentin Tarantino

The Messenger (2009/I): Alessandro Camon, Oren Moverman

A Serious Man (2009): Joel Coen, Ethan Coen

Up (2009): Bob Peterson, Pete Docter, Thomas McCarthy
