Forget the Taj Mahal.
If we had our way, Indian Chinese food would find its rightful place as one of the seven wonders of the world.
We are serious.
The very sight of Indian Chinese specialities like Gobi Manchurian or Vegetable Chow Mein on a menu triggers nostalgic memories of lunches and dinners enjoyed at favorite spots in Chennai and Bangalore.
So it was with much anticipation we entered Szechuan Garden, an Indian Chinese restaurant on Ernston Road in Parlin the other day.
Little did we realize the disapppointment we were in for.
One letdown followed upon another during our meal at Szechuan Garden.
Barring the Hot & Sour soup and the Vegetable Manchow soup, much of what we ate at Szechuan Garden was below average.
We asked for our appetizer Vegetable MoMo to be steamed rather than fried. One bite of the MoMo and we realized it was GoGo (meaning we wanted it to go away from our table) but the accompanying hot sauce was delicious.
Garlic Chicken at Szechuan Garden was an utter travesty of a dish.
With neither a strong garlic flavor nor enough spices in it, it was a pitiful caricature of the Garlic Chicken we've had so many times to great pleasure.
Gobi Manchurian was pathetic, with none of the the flavor that's made this dish a favorite among lovers of Indian Chinese cuisine.
Vegetable Chimney, a kind of mixed vegetable platter, looked grand but failed to stir any of us.
The underlying sauce tasted the same for both Gobi Manchurian and Vegetable Chimney.
Vegetable Chow Mein and Szechuan Fried Rice were not spicy leaving us shaking our heads in bafflement as to how this place coul remain in business with food so awful.
Although we'd specified that we liked our food "Hot & Spicy," much of what we got was bland stuff. Are these folks deaf or what?
Our waitress was a blabbering middle-aged Malaysian lady with a husband from Bombay, who proclaimed to our vegetarian friends that she couldn't stand vegetarian food. Our shocked friends looked at her in horror.
That our meal was not a complete disaster we owe to the Rasmalai dessert, which was decent. Thank god for small mercies!
We requested a copy of the itemized bill but our waitress didn't care to provide it. She just ignored the request and scribbled the amount on a piece of paper.
Neither the food nor the service make Szechuan Garden in Parlin worth visiting a second time.
Szechuan Garden is easily the worst Indian Chinese restaurants we've been to in New Jersey. It falls way short of its competitors like Ming, Nanking and Chopstick, all on Oak Tree Road in the Edison/Iselin area. - RR
