86,400 Preventable Deaths

We just read a few minutes back that every day in America 240 people die from healthcare acquired/associated infections (i.e. infections acquired in a hospital, long-term care facility, home care, nursing home).

That’s 86,400 deaths a year.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) defines healthcare-associated infections as infections that patients acquire during the course of receiving treatment for other conditions within a healthcare setting.

The CDC says healthcare-associated infections are one of the top ten leading causes of death in the U.S.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, of the 1.7 million infections reported among patients in the U.S., the most common healthcare-associated infections are urinary tract infections (32%), surgical site infections (22%), pneumonias (15%), and bloodstream infections (14%).

It’s believed that many healthcare acquired infections can be prevented by employing proper hand hygiene (like antiseptic handwashing or antiseptic handrubbing, hand cleansing) and following contact precautions and active surveillance procedures.

With Ashok Chavan (son of S.B.Chavan) set to take over as the new Chief Minister of Maharashtra, it’s time to take a look at the dirty phenomenon of dynasty politics (family politics) in India.

We define dynasty politics as the growing practice of close relatives or family members of established politicians stepping into the political arena and making a mockery of democracy.

Dynasty politics is an indicator of weak political systems like India, where politics is dominated by individuals rather than strong political institutions.

The practice of dynasty politics is not restricted to North India. Au contraire, it seems widespread across the country.

Here are a few egregious examples of dynasty politics in India:

ISI Involved in Mumbai Terror Attack – Reports

Pakistan’s intelligence agency ISI (Inter-Services Intelligence) is involved in the deadly terrorist strike on Mumbai, say news reports emanating from India in what could signal a retaliatory military strike on the Islamic nation by India.

In a new story, the Times of India is reporting that:

India has proof that the Inter Services Intelligence was involved in planning the Mumbai terror attacks and training the terrorists who killed more than 180 people during a 60-hour siege of the country’s financial capital, sources said in New Delhi on Thursday.

The names of trainers and the places where meticulous training took place are also known to the government, the sources said.

The United States is believed to have even more evidence, some of which it has shared with India, they said.

Chairman of US Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral Mike Mullen, who was in Pakistan on Wednesday, is believed to have told his Pakistani interlocutors that Washington had enough evidence to show a Pakistani hand in the attack, the sources said.

Meet ISI Chief – Ahmad Shuja Pasha

ISI (Inter-Services Intelligence), Pakistan’s premier intelligence service, is a name that spells terror to the pansies in India.

Indian media reports often blame ISI for the violence in Kashmir and elsewhere. But we have no way of knowing whether they are accurate.

The current director of ISI is Lieutenant General Ahmad Shuja Pasha.

Prior to his appointment as ISI Chief in late September this year, Shuja Pasha was the Director General for Military Operations.

In his previous avatar as Director General for Military Operations, Shuja Pasha was responsible for Pakistan Army’s operations in the North-West Frontier Province and the Federally Administered Tribal Areas.

Born in 1952, Shuja Pasha is married and has three children.
