Roku To Add Amazon.com Movies; Apple TV Dead?

Folks, it’s CES time. So you’re gonna see a lot of digital media stories here for the next few days.

Roku, which now lets Netflix subscribers stream movies and TV episodes to their TV sets via a $99 box, will soon bring a similar capability to Amazon.com.

In the near future, Roku box owners like us can rent or purchase 40,000 movies and TV episodes from the Amazon Video On Demand service.

Currently, movies and TV shows from Amazon can be easily watched on the TV sets via a TiVo DVR and Sony BRAVIA Internet Video Link.

A Big Deal?
Sure, the deal with Amazon.com expands Roku’s capabilities beyond Netflix but is it really a big deal?

Ghajini Collapses at Box Office

Despite all the hype, stolen shit Ghajini has collapsed badly in its second weekend at the U.S. box office.

For the weekend of January 2-4, Ghajini grossed a mere $288,075.

The Aamir Khan-Asin movie Ghajini came in at No-25 with an average gross of $3,471, less than the second week average gross of $3,983 for Shahrukh Khan’s Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi.

Now, Netflix Instant Play Right in the TV; Separate Box Not Required

First, consumers got the $99 Roku box that lets them stream movies from DVD rental service Netflix directly to their television sets via a broadband connection.

Then came other boxes like game console Xbox 360 and LG Blu-ray DVD players that provide a similar Roku-like functionality.

Now things have gotten even better with LG Electronics announcing Broadband HDTVs that come with the Netflix service built into the device. This means you won’t need a separate device in your home theatre.

The LG plasma and LCD Broadband HDTVs with the Netflix functionality are expected to roll out in the spring.

LG did not disclose pricing for the new TVs.

LG already offers a Blu-ray Disc Player (BD300 Network ) that lets users stream movies instantly from Netflix.

Of course, you have to be on a Netflix monthly plan of $8.99 or more to be able to stream movies and TV episodes.

Finally realizing that all the speculation on his health was proving to be, well, unhealthy for investors and the company, Apple CEO Steve Jobs fessed up today that he is indeed sick.

Here’s an excerpt from Steve Jobs’ confession letter:

Unfortunately, my decision to have Phil deliver the Macworld keynote set off another flurry of rumors about my health, with some even publishing stories of me on my deathbed.
