After Kaminey, we’re inclined to be more respectful of Bollywood director Vishal Bharadwaj.

So, when the recommendations for Blue Umbrella expanded into a chorus we were more receptive to it.

Fortunately, Netflix has Blue Umbrella in its Instant Play collection, which means you can play it on your TV at any time if you have a Roku, TiVo or Xbox 360 device without having to wait for the DVD.

Directed by Vishal Bharadwaj, Blue Umbrella features Pankaj Kapur (Shahid Kapoor’s father) and Shreya.

We’ll update this post after watching the 90-minute movie.

Great news, folks.

Bollywood star Shahrukh Khan, who has made no secret of his dislike for our nation America, was stopped for additional questioning by U.S. immigration authorities at Newark airport in New Jersey yesterday.

No sooner was Shahrukh Khan out of U.S. immigration interrogation than the arrogant star promptly lashed out at the U.S. officials for asking him ‘silly questions‘:

They were asking me silly questions like if I knew someone in the US who could vouch for me, if I could give them numbers of people they could get in touch with….They wanted to know why I came here.

Silly questions, you sick f**k?

The last time we let a bunch of America haters at the airport board planes, they rammed planes into the World Trade Center and caused the deaths of thousands of innocents.

Will you be happy if that happens again, Shahrukh?

No, right?

Then don’t frigging whine about our airport security.

You got balls, go lead a protest against Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi for turning a blind eye to the slaughter of Muslims wholesale in your country India. But the spineless coward and pussy that you are, you turned chicken and ran with your tail between your legs.

WTF does this jackass Shahrukh Khan think of himself. Just because he makes crappy movies like Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi or Om Shanti Om he deserves a free pass at the security points of our airports, eh?

Folks, a lot of names keep popping up at our airport security including that of Senator Edward Kennedy at one time. No one – not even you, Shahrukh – is above the law.

There’s no guarantee that popular figures or those in high positions will not engage in illegal activities. Let’s not forget that Indian Members of Parliament have been arrested by Indian police on charges of human trafficking to the west.

We are trying to improve our security system and you need to cooperate, not throw tantrums because a few additional questions were thrown your way.

So stop bitching, Shahrukh Khan. Don’t like our country, don’t come here.

Shahrukh Khan, you hate America but you desperately, shamelessly crave our money. That’s why you were here recently in the U.S. filming for your new movie My Name is Khan.

No Secret
That Shahrukh Khan does not like America is no secret and a fact he made clear in an interview he gave to the The Times (of London not the Mumbai rag Times of India) in 2008.

Shahrukh Khan minced no words about America in his interview with Anil Sinanan, Times Bollywood Film Critic:

I don’t like America. I love London as I feel at home here. People say English people are very cold and not friendly but I find them amazingly warm. Continue reading »

Kaminey Fares Well at U.S. Box Office

Not even that whacko emetic Priyanka Chopra can mar the charm of Kaminey.

Folks, simply put Kaminey is a lovely film.

So good you’d be forgiven for mistaking it for a slick Hollywood crime flick.

Exceptional Thriller
Kaminey is that exceptional Bollywood thriller where the story, acting (the sole exception being that turd-pile Priyanka), music and photography all come together in a fine symphony.

Even the actors in itsy bitsy roles seem to have rolled up their sleeves and given their utmost. Sweet!

More than anything else, we were swept away by Shahid Kapoor. If Priyanka activated our puking glands, Shahid evoked a frison of delight.

The young lad’s previous film Kismat Konnection was a sick joke and we were apprehensive whether we would be squandering more money.

Thankfully, in Kaminey Shahid Kapoor has amply redeemed himself with a glittering performance in both roles.

Just in case, you are one of the few dumb desis unaware of the Kaminey story, Shahid plays twins Guddu and Charlie.

One with a lisp and the other with a stutter. One who walks the straightforward path and the other who takes shortcuts, shorter the better. One on the right side of the law and the other on the wrong side. One who has a tender-side and the other a mean, destructive side.

A study in contrasts, eh? Continue reading »

If music be the food of love, play on,
Give me excess of it, that, surfeiting,
The appetite may sicken, and so die.

Yes, that was the bard in Twelfth Night (Act 1, Scene 1).

Having belatedly realized that our 16GB iPhone (which of course includes an iPod) still has a considerable amount of empty space, we told ourselves: What the heck, let’s fill up some of that space.

So, we dived into Apple’s iTunes digital media store and resurfaced with a variety of music.

Here’s some of what we’ve purchased lately for our iPod.

* Dhan Te Nan – Is there any Indian who doesn’t like this hot song from the movie Kaminey (releasing tomorrow). If so, stand up and be counted. We’re listening to this addictive song as we type this post. God, we hope this number is not stolen shit like a lot of other Bollywood stuff.

* Kaadhal Vaibhogame – A classic Tamil song from the old film Suvarillatha Chithirangal. A lovely number from Malaysia Vasudevan and S.Janaki. Music is by Gangai Amaran. We have most likely seen this Bhagyaraj movie but can’t remember a thing.

* The Man with the Harmonica – This one is from Once Upon a Time in the West. And the music is from the peerless Ennio Morricone. Simply lovely. If you haven’t seen Once Upon a Time in the West, fall upon your knees and beg forgiveness from the almighty for your sin.

* The Good, the Bad and the Ugly Theme - Another bewitching piece from the non pareil Ennio Morricone. This time it’s the theme music from Sergio Leone’s The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.

* Duniya Ki Sair – Our inordinate love for Rajshri led us to buy this song from the Raj Kapoor-Rajshri movie Around the World in Eight Dollars.

* Nagunagutha Nali Nali – Lovely Kannada song from the old Rajkumar film Bangarada Manushya. Those were the days when P.B.Srinivas used to sing for annavaru.

First came the illegal immigrants on the Mayflower (1620) and hundreds of other rickety ships.

Then came the United States of America, 156 years later.

Like it or not, illegal immigration is an inalienable part of our heritage.

If you pore deep into our history, you can’t but smell the sweat of our illegal forbears, or hear their different tongues or see their skins of a thousand shades.

And the hungry hordes still keep pouring on to our shores.

Desperate to escape the grinding poverty of their native lands, they come mostly by walk across the dangerous Southern desert, occasionally on leaky boats from Haiti and frequently by plane too.

Today there are an estimated 15 million-20 million illegal immigrants in the U.S.

Illegal immigrants in the U.S. come from every nook of the world including our own India (unlike the amigos who come by crossing the southern border, our desis usually end up as illegal immigrants by overstaying their visas).

But the present-day illegal immigrants in the U.S hail mostly from Latin America. As a group, they are often disparagingly referred to as Mexicans. You can see them in Los Angeles at the Norwalk station, in Virginia outside the Home Depot stores and huddled in groups in Suffolk County of Long Island.

Theirs is a tragic story, of life in the shadows without IDs, with false Social Security Numbers, a constant nagging fear of being deported by the immigration agents and exploitation by unscrupulous elements round them.

Given their plight, is it any surprise then that movie-makers find the story of illegal immigrants fertile ground and compelling material.

Directed by Patricia Riggen, the Spanish language La Misma Luna (Under the Same Moon) is one such effort.

Released in 2007, La Misma Luna is the story of an illegal immigrant Rosario (Kate del Castillo) in the U.S. and her son Carlitos (Adrian Alonso) who remains at home in Mexico.

We’ll update this post after watching the 109-minute movie.

Update:

Overall, a decent but definitely not a must-watch movie. Continue reading »

Kaminey Review – Bollywood Kamineys Deliver a Decent Flick, At Last

Kaminey Fares Well at U.S. Box Office

Bollywood film Kaminey featuring Shahid Kapoor and that non-actress Priyanka Chopra is releasing in the U.S. on August 14, 2009.

Vishal Bharadwaj is the director.

In the movie, described in some quarters as a violent comedy, Shahid Kapoor is featured in a dual role (twin brothers).

Shahid Kapoor’s last movie Kismat Konnection was a piece of trash that not surprisingly and without doubt deservedly failed to resonate at the box office.

Priyanka Chopra is, of course, one of the most hopeless, worthless, useless and talentless stars to emerge out of the Bollywood cesspool in modern times.

So we are not pinning high hopes on Kaminey.

Here are the showtimes for Kaminey in some major cities of U.S. and Canada:
