Folks, an airline that’s so disrespectful of its desi customers deserves to be shown the middle finger.

Do NOT, NOT give these swines your business.

Spread the word about this nasty airline.

File a small claim against them.

Teach British Airways a lesson about never treating desi travelers like shit.

Jai ho, Karuppiah.

Oh boy, our Karuppiahs a.k.a Tamils are all over the place. No kidding.

Indian-American Venkatraman Ramakrishnan has won the 2009 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his work on mapping the ribosomes at the atomic level.

Born in 1952 in the temple town of Chidambaram in Tamil Nadu, India, Venkatraman got a Ph.D. in Physics in 1976 from Ohio University following a B.Sc from Baroda University in Gujarat.

Venkatraman, who is currently working as Senior Scientist and Group Leader at Structural Studies Division, MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge, UK, shares the 2009 Nobel Prize in Chemistry with Thomas A. Steitz of Yale and Ada E. Yonath and Weizmann Institute of Science, Rehovot, Israel.

Here’s what Venkatraman Ramakrishnan had to say today upon receiving the news about the prestigious honor:

I have to say that I am deeply indebted to all of the brilliant associates, students and post docs who worked in my lab as science is a highly collaborative enterprise….The MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology and the University of Utah supported this work and the collegiate atmosphere there made it all possible. The idea of supporting long term basic research like that at LMB does lead to breakthroughs, the ribosome is already starting to show its medical importance.

Tamil Pride
This is the third time a Tamil has won the Nobel Prize. Continue reading »

British Airways is playing unfare with desi travelers in the U.S.

Folks, British Airways made a big-time error in its fares to India from the U.S. but refuses to take responsibility for the mistake by doing the right thing.

A desi travel agent in New Jersey says that this past Friday British Airways was showing round trip fares from anywhere in the US to anywhere in India from $44 round trip, which came up to $551.00 including taxes.

Travel agencies on the East Coast like Air-Savings.com sprang into action and informed many of their clients about the special.

It seems the $44 fares were available through the travel agents’ Global Distribution System, the airline’s web site and over the phone as well.

And some of the clients were smart enough to book it. Come on, who wouldn’t book a $44 fare to India. Balle Balle, Amritsar, here we come! Continue reading »

Dunno about you.

There’s something about the Mac fries that’s got us swearing by it (at least most of the time).

Not even the news in the desi rags about use of beef extracts made a difference.

Last night, we read a piece in the New York Times Sunday Magazine (Oct 4, 2009) that McDonald’s uses dimethylpolysiloxane, a chemical used to treat head lice, in its fries.

No Kidding
According to the NYT, dimethylpolysiloxane is also used as a lubricant, a dry-cleaning solution, an aquarium sealant and a component of the tiles that let spacecraft reenter the atmosphere without burning up. Continue reading »

Here are some of the Bollywood, Kollywood and Sandalwood tracks we purchased on iTunes lately.

99-cents each.

Made in India (Hindi) – Our favorite Alisha Chinai track.

Intaha Ho Gai Intezar Ki (Hindi) – Superb song (Kishore Kumar, Asha Bhosle et al) from the 1984 Amitabh Bachchan-Jayapradha film Sharaabi.

Vizhiyile Malarndhadhu (Tamil) – Sung by S.P. Balasubramaniam (thanks, mihi_rex), this is from the old Rajni film Bhuvana Oru Kelvikuri.

Purple Haze (English) – Our first Jimi Hendrix purchase.

Purple haze all in my brain
Lately things just don’t seem the same
Actin’ funny, but I don’t know why
‘Scuse me while I kiss the sky….

Oruvan Oruvan (Tamil) – Yes, Muthu is the film. S.P.Balasubramaniam is the singer. Continue reading »

So much ink and mucho bandwidth has been spent on the Bollywood film Aamir that we felt it time to see what the noise is all about.

But before seeing the Hindi film, we will be watching the Tagalog language film Cavite first.

Why, you ask?

Because there’s chatter on the net that Cavite (2005) has inspired its Hindi successor Aamir, which debuted in 2008.

If you live in the U.S., both Cavite and Aamir are available on Netflix Instant Play.

We’ll update this post in a few hours after watching both movies.

No end to their shame.

Just no end.

When two non-actors like Priyanka Chopra and Harman Baweja come together, you can be sure the end result will be a mega D I S A S T E R at the U.S. box office

What’s Your Rashee suffered a massive hemorrhage in its second weekend at the U.S. box office.

Here, see for yourself in the below table:

Bollywood bore Wake Up Sid (featuring Ranbir Kapoor and Konkana Sen) has not done well at the U.S. box office.

Wake Up Sid grossed $355,532 at the U.S. box office for the October 2-4, 2009 weekend.

The UTV distributed movie opened at #25 for the October 2-4, 2009 weekend at the U.S. box office with an average gross of $4,500.

Interestingly, Wake Up Sid did much better at the U.S. box office than the recent Salman Khan crap-show Wanted.

Oh well, Ranbir Kapoor is a superior actor compared to Salman Khan.

Here’s how Wake Up Sid fared at the U.S. box office compared to a few other prominent Bollywood movies

Run, Govinda. Run.

Find a big rat-hole to fit your big, fat torso.

Hide your big, fat shame.

In what can only be described as a monumental disaster, Do Knot Disturb turned in one of the worst performances for a Bollywood movie at the U.S. box office.

For the October 2-4, 2009 weekend, Do Knot Disturb grossed a pitiful $124,573 at the U.S. box office. Worse than What’s Your Rashee.

Worse than that infernal nightmare Drona. Can things get any worse, folks. Nah, right?

Do Knot Disturb opened at #41 for the October 2-4, 2009 weekend at the U.S. box office with an average gross of $2,185.

An absolutely horrendous actor, Govinda is a total stranger to the idea of acting. High-school kids do better in their Annual School Day functions.
