Once in a blue moon Dame Luck deigns to bestow her beatific smile on us.

And when she does, bountiful blessings rain upon us.

Like during our recent visit to Spice Melange on Main Street in Metuchen, NJ.

Folks, Spice Melange is truly an embarras de richesse, an exception to the crappy Indian restaurants fouling up the New Jersey landscape, particularly in Edison and Iselin.

Great Food
We had noticed Spice Melange on the busy Main Street during our drives through Metuchen but never had a chance to drop anchor until the other day.

As we tiptoed into the restaurant, we were a little taken aback to see it completely deserted save two employees (a Sikh chef and a Hindu (?) waiter) shooting the breeze in a corner. As they saw us, the turbaned Sikh ran away from us into the kitchen while the dark Hindu rushed toward us to show us to a table.

Hungry as we were, we fell upon our food like lions after a wildebeest kill.

Almost all of the food met with our approval.

The hot and nice Tomato Soup soothed our inner chill while Brocolli Pakoras were spicy, crisp and tasty. We can’t recollect an Indian restaurant where the Pakoras wowed us.

The medium thick Baingan Bartha was appropriately spiced and a nice treat with both Naan Bread and White Rice.

Mutter Paneer was one of the so-so dishes we encountered. Although better than what we’re used to elsewhere, it was a bit sour to win our hearty approval. Continue reading »

Ah, the temerity of Ulaga Madayans who can’t act but fancy they can sing. :(

Only in Tamil Nadu, folks.

Only in Karunai-illadha Nadu (no-justice land) can such blatant injustice go unchallenged.

Devi Sri Prasad is the music director of this romantic comedy that should hit the screens in the not too distant future.

It’s 12:21 AM on the East Coast.

Thank God, we’re already soused. Otherwise, we’d not be able to endure this Manmandhan Sunnambhu oops Manmadhan Ambhu cacophony.

A few minutes ago, we forked out $6.93 and downloaded Manmadhan Ambu from Apple iTunes directly to our iPhone over WiFi.

Ayyo, enna pavam pannitom!
What great sin have we committed.

OK, schmucks, let’s listen to the the songs now:

* Dhagudha Dhattham – Kamal Haasan is the singer and also responsible for the lyrics of this number that left no impact upon us.

* Who’s the Hero?Who’s the Zero, eh? Nuff said! Kamal Haasan is said to be the lyricist of this number too!

* Neela Vannam – A slow-paced number that has no redeeming qualities. Ayyo, Kadavule Kapathu (God, please save us) from such travesties masquerading as music.

* Oyyale – Sounds like a bad devasam (funeral) song. The harsh male vocal grated on our nerves. Need anymore be said about this folksy number.

* Kamal Kavidhai – The movie’s lead stars Kamal Haasan and Trisha Krishnan dish out this garbage masquerading as music.  Vendum. Vendaam, vendaam, vendaam (no, no, no).

* Theme of Manmadhan Ambu – Disgrace.

WTF is this tripe? No, that’s a rhetorical question. As if you twits know what a rhetorical question is.

* Manmadhan AmbuShaniyane, che. Idhu oru pattu (Oh, the devil is this too a song)? The kind of nonsense that you see/hear in a lot of Tamil films just a few minutes into the movie.

Bottom line, Manmadhan Ambu is mediocre shit. Certainly, not the stuff of legend.

Oh, well for these imbecile Kollywood fans this drivel will suffice. Bet these monkeys have already wet their undies!

Excuse us, will y’all while we refill our fourth glass of Gin?

Nitish Triumphs
Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar (JD-U) won a solid victory at the hustings.

Janata Dal (U) and BJP are poll partners while Lallu’s Rashtriya Janata Dal fought the elections with Ram Vilas Paswan’s Lok Jan Shakti Party by its side.

I know what Gold does to men’s souls.
- The old man Howard (Walter Huston) in The Treasure of the Sierra Madre

Gold Fever?

No, we have never caught the gold fever but after having watched The Treasure of the Sierra Madre we now know how dangerous the ailment can be to the victim as well as those around him.

By the way do any of you schmucks know what a full glass of gin day after day does to a desi’s brain? It friggin melts it and makes SI close the comments. ;)

Bogie, We Hardly KnewYe
Who having watched Humphrey Bogart a.k.a Bogie in Casablanca can resist the spell that he casts on viewers.

Not us, definitely.

Great fans that we are of Bogie, we popped The Treasure of the Sierra Madre DVD into our home theater last night to watch one of our favorite stars in a non-romantic and negative role.

Made in 1947 (the year of India’s independence from the British yoke) and released in early 1948, the black and white film Treasure of the Sierra Madre won three Oscars.

And deservedly so.

Sadly, Bogie (now dead for 53 years) was missing among the Oscar winners.

More Than About Bogie
But the Treasure of the Sierra Madre is more than just about Bogie, so much more.

It’s hard to believe that 62 years back Hollywood was producing such fine films and in India we still continue to churn out junk like that Biryani cook Ajit’s Aegan and the ‘Master Chef’ Akshay Kumar’s Action Replayy.

Set in the 1920s, Treasure of the Sierra Madre (directed by John Huston) is the story of two down and out Americans Dobbs (Humphrey Bogart) and Curtin (Tim Holt) getting drawn to gold prospecting after hearing an old man Howard (Walter Huston) at a flophouse wax lyrical about the opportunities therein. Guzaarish BO – Plunges 62% in Second Weekend

Folks, Guzaarish U.S. box office numbers are out.

They are very disappointing.

Despite a decent performance by Hrithik Roshan and solid direction of the film by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Guzaarish has fared badly at the U.S. box office.

The below table reveals  Guzaarish lackluster numbers:

Guzaarish BO – Plunges 62% in Second Weekend

Guzaarish Box Office – Disaster in U.S.

Gosh, thanks to director Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Bollywood actor Hrithik Roshan we finally got to see a fine Hindi film after, hmmm, an eternity.

Even that utterly worthless Bollywood star Aishwarya Rai couldn’t screw up this decent movie, though we must say the Jonah tried hard to ruin it with her look of what seemed like painful menstrual cramps throughout the movie.

Touch of Class
Packing an unconventional Bollywood story centered around a quadriplegic former magician, Guzaarish is a lavish visual spectacle with a (mostly) spirited performance by its lead character Hrithik Roshan.

After living 14 years as a helpless quadriplegic dependent on others for the smallest things, Ethan Mascarenhas (Hrithik Roshan) has had enough of this planet and wants to say goodbye via euthanasia or Ethanasia as he puts it in the movie.

Who can blame Ethan for the decision. After all, the man can’t even swat a fly that has disturbingly taken a love for his nose.

Sofia D’Souza (Aishwarya Rai) is the nurse who’s devotedly cared for Ethan for 12 of the 14 despairing years.

Hrithik Roshan delivers his career best performance in Guzaarish though we were irked by his occasional tendencies to overact and laugh like a retard (toward the beginning of the movie).

Most Bollywood films are inane love stories and, boy, are we thrilled to see a film like Guzaarish for a change!

Much of the film is shot indoors but handled very aesthetically. The photography and sets are impressively constructed.

Did we tell y’all we liked Shernaz Patel as the lawyer fighting for Ethan’s right to end his life. We sure would love to see more of her.

Truth be said, the vast millions of simians a.k.a. unthinking Bollywood fans, who mindlessly genuflect at the altar of trashy Hindi films every Friday, do not deserve a film like Guzaarish. Continue reading »
